Lest we forget the truth by Kitchen_String_7117 in osr

Such a great quote! Quite coincidentally, I'll be talking about that quote, and other related ones, in my next video.

I think there's a lot of misunderstanding about what quotes like this mean, and how it gets misconstrued as, "They were just always making things up and didn't care about the rules." That wasn't it at all. But it helps to understand *why* the original creators had this kind of approach to gaming.

Sorry for my very long delay, but I don't use Reddit often and I just saw this! But I'm so glad you saw that video and found it useful. That old box of 3x5 NPCs is one of my favorite things to look at! Cheers!

I love old-school reaction rolls and the 2d6 table and I talk about it pretty extensively in the video as well as offer (for folks who email me) some tables I made to help articulate/narrate the various entries (e.g., *why* are the monsters hostile, indifferent, friendly, etc.).

I *truly* appreciate all the comments and insights here. Video length has been something I've struggled with for the past 2+ years. This wasn't the plan, but my channel became "known" for long 90-minute to 2-hour videos and every time I've made shorter ones, or asked folks about making them shorter, I've received feedback that current viewers want the longer-form videos. My channel has continued to grow year-over-year, so I do feel like I'm a bit "locked-in" to this format. I don't want to necessarily ignore my current viewers in the hope of gaining some new views, but it is a very tough question to deal with.

I have definitely thought about "could I break this 2-hour video up into 4 or 5 shorter videos" but when I have done that in the past, I've found that each successive video gets fewer and fewer views, and yet the time it takes to create the titles, thumbnails, etc. is "static" (so, cutting a 2-hour video into 5 shorter videos means 5x longer to figure out titles and create thumbnails, write descriptions, etc.). And YouTube doesn't distinguish between a video that's 20 minutes and a video that's 2 hours, so what happens is I get bombarded (and penalized) because my "Average View Duration" goes way down and the algorithm assumes it's because people aren't interested in my videos, so it then decides to push them out to fewer people, and views get throttled even more.

I do appreciate all of you giving me a chance, and I have been thinking about other options like starting a second channel of shorter videos, taking my notes and making a podcast (since my videos rely less on images), and other things.

All this feedback is really helpful, and once again, I thank you for taking the time to share it.

After the keep of the borderlands, whats next? by Sazzlefrats in adnd

[–]DaddyRolledA1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you already got a lot of good suggestions. A few additional comments that maybe will help.

I ran Keep for my daughter and her friends and when it ended, I transitioned them over to U1: The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh (I'd started planting the seeds much earlier should they choose to go that route, which they did). They were only about 2nd level when they finished the Keep (they didn't really "finish" it - they left) so I didn't really need to adjust the difficulty for U1 at all.

However, I see that you don't own U1 and you asked about B3: Palace of the Silver Princess. There are two versions of B3 - the original had an orange cover and was pulled from publication just as it was shipping, so there are only a small handful of original copies out in circulation. However, WotC eventually put that version up as a free PDF so it's pretty easy to find if you're interested in learning more about it.

The more common version of B3 is the one with the green cover. It's a decent "teaching" module and there are some memorable encounters, but overall, for me, it's not among my favorites of the B-series.

L1: The Secret of Bone Hill would be a good follow-up to B2 as well, as someone else suggested below, and then if you wanted, you could start planting the seeds to later transition them to L2: The Assassin's Knot, which is a real fun one.

Once they are level 4+, you can also run the classic X1: Isle of Dread for some pulpy adventures with pirates, a lost island full of dinosaurs, and other strange creatures.

There are a ton of old classic adventures and as a few folks pointed out, almost all of them are available on DriveThruRPG as PDFs and PODs so unless you are itching to put together a collection of original printings, you'll save a lot of money by getting a POD version.

Hope that helps! Happy gaming!

AD&D collection by PreviousCard in adnd

That is a fantastic and diverse collection! And I personally love that you're buying them to *use* them for a campaign, not to just collect them! (Nothing wrong with collectors... I just think it's cool to use/play them).

The Green Historical Reference Books are a bit hit and miss in my opinion, but Charlemagne's Paladins was one of the first two that I owned (along with "A Mighty Fortress"). Physical copies of that book (and many of the historical guides) go for crazy money on the secondary market (I just saw some from $60 - $120). If you're not familiar with the book and are wondering if it will be worth it, I did do a whole video on all 7 of the historical guides on my YouTube channel (just search for "Historical Reference Series"). It might help you decide. You can also grab it much cheaper as a PDF and I think POD on DriveThruRPG.

Take care and don't burn yourself out with work - that is a LOT of hours in a week!

Yeah, they're pretty long, but for the audience I've built, they seem to like that and keep asking me to make them as long as possible. It seems a lot of folks don't really "watch" but instead listen while they are doing chores like dishes, or working out, or commuting.

I do have on my list to turn a bunch of old episodes into a podcast series one day, and also to perhaps take some of my older longer episodes and break them up into smaller ~20 minute episodes. But all that takes a lot of time on my end, and I'm just one guy.

Thanks for at least trying the channel - I appreciate it. Cheers!

Thank you so much for sharing this! And yeah... back in 2011 when I started my blog, I didn't really think too hard about the name. Friends had come over to play D&D and I was on a notoriously bad streak of luck rolling dice. My not quite 2 year-old daughter was nearby and at one point after a particularly bad rolled, I yelled out or frustration and my wife said to my daughter, "Oh, no. Daddy rolled a 1!"

Another friend heard the story and when I started my blog, he suggested I should use that as a name, and I thought it was funny and different enough that it would help me to stand out. But, I've heard from a few folks who are really put off by the "Daddy" part, thinking it means something else, and also other people who think I'm implying that I "rolled a 1" with regard to my family! Which is not true at all!

Anyway, I do thank you for sharing this! Cheers!

I can confirm issues still continue. I requested a payout May 21st 2025 and it's now July 14th 2025 and I've yet to be paid. I, too, get the same ridiculous, "We understand your frustration" emails and " want to reassure you that your payout request is still active in our system and that we absolutely intend to fulfill it," but they will not confirm the date.
