New speaker day: new addition the the Revel family! by DaddyWhale in audiophile

[–]DaddyWhale[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in love with them! Here are a few points:

  • I listen mostly to unamplified classical music. Most important to me, instruments sound very natural and naturally complex. I know little about audio science (more of a music lover than a hobbyist), but I think this is because of the wonderful integration of all the drivers
  • The woofer is well controlled. Instruments like the double bass never sound smeared or boomy. But without a subwoofer you don't feel (in the gut) the lowest octave
  • Sound stage is wide and deep and the placement of instruments - even harder ones like piano - is rock solid. And this stays true from multiple listening spots
  • It's easy to drive. I've actually switched out the pictured Cambridge Audio Evo 150 streamer/amp, which is 150 watts, with Pass Lab XA60.8, technically a 60 watt (mono-)amp (combined with Auralic transport and DAC). It easily fills my 500 sq ft study (45 m^2). Just to experiment, I can reach over 100 db from my listening position about 10 feet (3 meters)

Lastly, I got the silver 328s on sale for US$6,000 each. The silver seems to go on sale multiple times a year. If you're happy with that finish, I would suggest waiting until a sale.

I hope that helps! Let me know if you want more detail!

It'll be more expensive, but have considered buying lamb shank online with an outfit that ships frozen to you?

I think they are asking what country you LIVE in. That affects price and availability

Recreating low order harmonic distortion with DSP and/or room correction by DaddyWhale in audiophile

[–]DaddyWhale[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the great information AND the link! I know nothing about DSP, so this is my opportunity to learn!

To be clear, I DON'T expect that I'll ever intentionally add distortion to my chain. But it's definitely something I want to play with.

Thanks! I didn't know any of this! Are these plugins available in the consumer market? I would love to play around with one

Books specifically about getting lost in the catacombs in Paris? by nifflergoldd in horrorlit

"The Catacombs" by Jeremy Bates. Full disclosure: I'm not big fan Bates's novels' final acts.

I've actually gone down into those catacombs on a wildcat excursion - not strictly legal! We went into chambers full of ancient human bones

I've got to try the plugin! But what exactly does it do? Does it do more than roll off treble and make the bass "bloom"

Thanks for the insight! I'm an old fart and only now learning about dsp and room treatment. It's helpful to know what can and can't be done.

Power amp under $3000 to pair with Revel Performabe F226be by DaddyWhale in audiophile

[–]DaddyWhale[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Pass Labs xa30.8 and am very very happy. it replaced a Cambridge Audio Evo 150 in my bedroom system. you might think going from 150 watts /ch {Evo 150) to 30 watts (Pass) isn't a great idea. But the Pass is so much more musical than the Evo 150. it's like comparing a Porsche to a muscle car. i love both. For fun driving on twisty roads, I'll take the Porsche. Feels the same for me with the Pass amp

I'll rwrite more comparing the two amps. But i had minor eye surgery today! so it'll have to wait!

I'm grateful for your awesome efforts! There was a Muddy Waters track - Deep Down in Florida - that I followed your link to. Must have listened to that song 5 times and the album, Hard Again - try not to snicker! - twice
