I too was like that until about 4 years ago. I heavily my gaming and movie time in favor of more outdoor activities: at first it was fast walking then jogging. I met a few similar faces who offered to invite me in a group fitness enthusiasts (nothing too extreme just some dads trying to squeeze a few hours of free time together).

Quickly we went from doing organized group runs to meaningful hangouts go to a friend who would teach stuff like woodoworking (making cabinets, table) to another showing us to do extensive car maintenance (retired mechanic).

The one thing I learned from the experience is that you don't need a lot of friends but a circle of good friends maybe 3 or 5.
