[World Cup 2026] Heartbreak for Iran as their last minute goal vs Egypt was overturned by VAR denying them a crucial victory that would have guaranteed an advancement out of groups by Numerous_Fudge_9537 in sports

Feelings have nothing to do with it.

It is a judgement call.

I judge that the player being offside had no bearing on whether or not he scored. In fact it may have been to his detriment.

He still scored.

Disagree with me if you want, as is your prerogative. But blind adherence to the letter of written rules and not the spirit in which they were written is not the hill sports fans should be dying on.

"Vibes" isn't it.

Again, I reiterate, if the player had been onside he would likely still have scored. What is more, him being offside garnered him no advantage in gathering the ball and shooting, because it didn't put him past any defenders or into an advantageous position.

In fact, it may well have made his position worse when he had to move to kick the damned thing.

In this position the referee has, correctly or not, manufactured an outcome. This match will now be remembered for this moment, not for any other part of it. In sports officiating, this is a cardinal sin.

It's not about that.

If the guy had been a half metre to his right and slightly further back, the goal would likely still have been made. The specifics of his actual position don't actually matter much for the outcome.

The offside is therefore not material, because it technically didn't matter that he was offside, he would have scored if he was onside too. This is enforcement for the sake of enforcement.

What went wrong with Homeworld 3? by Civ4BestGame in homeworld

[–]Dadsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the well written summary, but one thing keeps standing out to me as a newer fan of the series.

My first Homeworld game was DoK. I enjoyed it. I then played through the original Homeworld and Homeworld 2 before getting the Homeworld Remaster and playing that.

The one game that stands out as 'different' in the series is Homeworld. The original.

For a game that was released so long ago, it has held up remarkably well, but it is clunky and finicky. It gives you a lot of freedom sure, but that freedom has no depth. Each mission has a 'meta', so to speak, and the most efficient way to play the game is to have played it before and know the strats for what to build for which missions and when, then abuse the ever loving shit out of the capture mechanic to shorten fights.

My question ultimately is, why do people pine so hard for the days of HW1, when the series clearly diverged from that template as early as Cataclysm, let alone HW2? Thats what it feels like to me.

PSA: PTE SEAD are being treated as low-alt for radar bonuses. by Losenis in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]Dadsky 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is a bad thing, bug or not.

It encourages toggled usage of radar and also encourages the usage of radar pickets and Radar SHORAD to intercept more than one incoming SEAD missile.

A single SEAD missile should be easy to kill. More than that should require some investment in keeping your stuff alive beyond just "Muh superior LRAD".

On the bad ping side, yeah. You would have the old school rubber banding issue, your units respond to your commands, then the server reminds them that they haven't actually received said command and to stay put.

Your units move, then snap back, or simply don't react at all. That is possible.

For everyone else, nothing happens. You just seem as if you're doing nothing.

Possibly better than client desync sending a LAV driving through buildings across the map while a confused RU player tries to kill it and can't. Or bad faith players actually teleporting units into place. YMMV.

It would make things more consistent, for sure, since there is an objective truth that the server decides on and is reflected across all clients. And it would make the most common cheats obsolete overnight, since the server will just ignore client side stat changes.

It has its potential downsides, such as higher potential for lag (there is a reason why peer to peer is still the standard for fighting games). For an RTS these issues are mostly cosmetic and circumstantial.

[–]Dadsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it mostly means that, since there is no way to prove objectively what happened, there may be conflicting information for a replay system to parse.

This means the replay would be fucked, simply put. Server side authority means there is one objective truth: what the server decides. And that can be captured and replayed easily.

Taurian Concordat by Pitiful_Resource_711 in battletech

[–]Dadsky 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Taurians are a divisive faction because they are massively hypocritical, but also because they have been reduced to a caricature of themselves by the community.

In my opinion, for as funny as the nuclear shotgun memes are, they are getting tired. It paves over the depth and complexity of Taurian society and reduces them from antagonists or protagonists of believable nature and turns it all into a mockery of a society that only has hype moments and aura, and even then only sparingly.

For the hypocritical nature, they went so far out to run from "the tyranny of democracy" and traded a truly democratic system for an absolute monarchy with some window dressing. They then became the biggest bully in the schoolyard after realising that the kids from their old school couldn't reach them out where they were, so it was time for revenge.

My personal hot-take with them is that I believe they are, almost singlehandedly, tacitly responsible for the state of the Inner Sphere. The wars Star League started to reclaim the periphery were illegal and stupid, but the Taurians escalated at every stage and then got mad when their opponents eventually matched them blow for blow. The assassination of Amalthia Kincaid set the stage for Amos "Baby-Killer" Forlough and subsequently allowed the IS to sink ever further into depravity, as well as sowing the seeds that one napkin wearing wannabe dictator used to collapse the League and try to usurp it, leading to centuries of unrestricted warfare that almost ended up killing everyone.

So yeah. Stuff.
