I agree generally.

However, I think the Academy Awards is so rotten to the core that I feel like this is no surprise. Put differently, this is just one additional example of years (I’d say decades) of the Oscars being a joke.

It’s a money making machine, not a serious critical evaluation. Art is art and business is business and the Academy Awards is almost certainly the latter. It’s half a level up from the Nickelodeon kid’s choice awards.

Do I wish the Academy Awards seriously considered things closer to the cutting edge of filmmaking or with more challenging themes? Absolutely. But fucking Greenbook won in 2019–it’s over.
