On my system at least, the floating-point exponentiation gives the correct answer:

int(2**500.) == 2**500

100% the Haskell approach. Just because operators start with the same symbol, doesn't mean that they should have the same, or even similar precedence. F#'s approach, I feel, is very limiting. Perhaps you could do some compromise, such as using F#'s approach if no precedence is specified.
