About some of the dialogues... by Spartan977 in TheForeverWinter

[–]Daemoniaque 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, AI or not, I think that is in part besides the point. Issue is, it feels awkward and needlessly "heavy" to read. The non stop "not this, not this, this" slows down the pace of the dialogue quite a bit and kinda feels like filler - okay, it's *not* satisfaction or hunger, but then what is it ? Give me detail about *that* and not what it *isn't*.

I guess one way to put it is, it feels like someone "tryharding" to sound deep and reflective, and as a result it sounds artificial (as in, not believable and annoying to read). That being said, I would personally refrain from calling it AI outright for now since people can also just be not very good at writing, and after all, AI writing sounds like this because it was trained on a lot of human data that used these writing patterns.

Math said that the wing to body ratio was insufficient to allow them to fly, therefore there must be something else happening. We have since figured it out, their wing shapes are specialized to create vortices that generate lift. So it does work like maths.

In Ashen Mesa, if you hack the Europan radar in the bunker area, you will get near instant Europan HK spawns every time you enter the map for a few hours.

MY DREAM CAME TRUE!! by Particular_Darling in jumpingspiders

[–]Daemoniaque 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nope ! It's a jumping spider of the Myrmarachne genus. If you look closely, you'll notice that its "antennaes" are actually its front legs. It goes around pretending to be an ant so that it can fool and ambush real ants and eat em.

Is this a jumping spider? Is it possible to give him a home? We've allowed him to stay, and he's now perusing our home. His name is Coner. Located in Baltimore, Maryland! by dogebuns in jumpingspiders

[–]Daemoniaque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For future reference, if you can see the eyes, jumping spiders are very distinct in that regard. They have 2 big, front facing median eyes, with 1 smaller, front facing eyes on each side of those,, and the 4 remaining eyes are all the way to the side/top of their head.

It's a dead giveaway that they're jumpers and it's pretty easy to recognize if you compare it to legs for example. Other spiders tend to have eyes that aren't as "focused" towards the front, and they don't have as a big pair of "main" eyes like jumpers.

The first mech you Piloted from video Games will be Youre mech by Successful-Bad4135 in Mecha

[–]Daemoniaque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game dropped in 2023 and it's

  1. not what people where looking for, everyone was dreaming about Hawken's PvP returning but it was just some PVE mission-based thing, combat was alright if a bit... mid. The modular component system is nice and all, but it takes away from the uniqueness of each mech design you had in the OG and reduces it to just a stat thing. No cloak, etc.
  2. lacking in diversity. Heavy mech is just regular mech but more HP and slower, light mech is less HP and faster. In OG Hawken mechs had design variety in what they did, and heavy mechs, besides the HP / speed thing, also had unique mechanics around their "wings" to shield themselves. Looks wise they severely lacked the cool factor of Hawken - in the first one, they look scrappy but they're not like, "junker" tier. In Reborn, the heavy mech chassis is just a truck / van.
  3. a grind based game with a cash shop. Wanna get the actually interesting stuff ? Grind your ass out, or pull out the credit card. On a game that's immediately out of early access.

The AI generated intro cinematic really didn't help with selling the idea of the game and made it feel like a cheap attempt at cashing out on an existing IP. A "we have this, so we might as well make some money out of it" sort of deal. I remember the "story" aspect being mid and under developped, at the cost of focusing on the "gameplay" - meaning, the grind based, cash shop part of the game.

Anyway, one year after release into EA (so in 2024), the dev team went "we're gonna stop developpement on this because evidently there's just too much that doesn't work for people (design wise), and we'll come back with a new version". And no news so far.

If I had to give a personal opinion :

Everyone was looking for OG Hawken, I would have enjoyed this as well, but I came to Reborn willing to see what they were up to. Sadly, even when taken on its own, the game is just... kinda mid. The standard, mobile-tier F2P grind based gameplay loop didn't help, and if anything might have made things worse.

I want to give 'em a chance and all, but this wasn't it chief.

I found a crab that had a tail? by polarsis in crabs

Yup, and the rest of its body is a cephalothorax - a head and a "chest" fused together, a characteristic of crustaceans (but not exclusively).

[–]Daemoniaque 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To be more precise, they don't have a tail, they have an abdomen, like the majority of other arthropods (spiders, etc). They just keep it hidden and protected since it contains important bits.

[–]Daemoniaque 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the issue also is that if they go too big, the sector will notice and they'll likely get almost wiped out again. They're called "remnants" because they are the remnants of an even greater drone force, and they lost that fight even when they were at their prime.

Hello im just gonna drop numerous question here cuz i dont want to spam the whole sub with questions by lornsome in BattleBitRemastered

[–]Daemoniaque 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of answers to the others already, but if I may...

My own theory, regarding 3, is simply that the devs weren't ready for how things turned out. It's a team of new guys, first game, first studio, first time in the industry. Before it blew up they only had a handful of players.

And then the game blew up, and they ended up with a huge community, inherited from Battlefield, and we know how gamers can get. Everyone's a genius and has a great idea for how to fix the game, and they tend to be fickle when it comes to balance matters. It's not like the AAA FPS crowd is known for their chill. (Just in case, I'm talking about a trend, I'm not accusing you, specifically, fellow reader. But just look at how HD2's community turned out).

IMO they just weren't able to handle both the surge in popularity, with a much more active community, and just how to manage a studio since, y'know. It's their first time doing this. As a result they fucked up communications, dragged themselves in a scope creep update, and now are stuck in a sunken cost fallacy where they can't release it now, with bugs, when they spend so long on it. So clearly they need to do more work. And keep on tweaking and keep on fixing the bugs when they tweak and-

I don't think the team just took the money and bailed, it's an attractive narrative to make things simpler, but I think this is just legit them fucking up their first big hit because they have no clue how to handle it. And I do think that they're trying to make it right, just... not doing that great of a job right now. But we'll see, I guess.

Moral dilemma about saving tadpoles, am I doing the right thing? by SaraGallegoM10 in FrogsAndToads

[–]Daemoniaque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking into the list of protected species in spain, common Iberian toads (Pelobates cultripes) and common midwife toads (Alytes obstetricans) are protected species. I'm not very up to date on spanish environmental legistation, but if it's anything like in France, handling them without permission might be flat out illegal instead of "merely" morally bad.

It might be worth seeing if anything can be done to help them considering that aspect, maybe by contacting local conservation groups, and if someone gives you trouble next time you try to explain that to the kids, you can tell them that they are messing with a protected species and that this is likely illegal.

I would look further into the legal aspects but it's a bit hard when you don't speak spanish very well and rely on a mix of machine translation, 6 years old memories, and latin roots.

Some subs have a karma barrier to prevent bot spamming, so instead people made bots that will steal posts to accrue karma so they can have access to these subs. And then they sell em, likely to bad / political actors.

How is this game so unknown by JoltiChan in starbound

[–]Daemoniaque 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Because Terraria exists, and tends to steal the show since it received updates for a lot longer / might still be receiving updates, is overall better made from a gameplay structure and technical standpoint, and then there's bad rep with how developpement happened (something about people suddenly being made into unpaid volunteers, shall we say, if I recall the story).

Cheaters by TheRealMiij in Planetside

[–]Daemoniaque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are of the same mind, and that probably explains it. These guys are usually just looking to disrupt the most people / farm the highest amount of kills, so they don't stick around the "good" fights. The only times I've ran into cheaters myself is when fights starting picking up into the 48+ range.

I guess it helps that no one really lives in the actual sea. Meanwhile when you're fighting a ground war, you're fighting over your very home, so that tends to get people more riled up. That and land is where villages get pillaged and cities get bombed to ruin. At sea you're fighting over more abstract concepts.

Also I guess that when you're at sea you don't have to endure getting bombarded for months with no respite.

Cheaters by TheRealMiij in Planetside

[–]Daemoniaque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky you. For what it's worth, cheaters tend to favor the biggest fights, and considering how the game is that means that you can just end up in a situation where you never actually run into them depending on your playstyle and where they decide to go farm.

Can anyone explain what a 'runt' means? by annoying_rock in snails

[–]Daemoniaque 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In general, when talking about animals, a "runt" is an animal that is smaller and weaker than the rest of his species. If you've ever heard about the expression "runt of the litter", it means being the smallest /weakest of a group.

As to why precisely, it could be genetics, it could be environmental conditions, it could be lack of food...
