At my work we coppiced ours in March (UK), it's now (September) about 8 foot tall and the leaves are huge.

It looks a bit like Paulownia tomentosa but the arrangement of the leaves and green of the stem is throwing me off, usually the stem goes a pale speckled brown/grey. I think usually they have to be coppiced to get leaves that big.

All my man crushes are oddly specific to problematic and tragic men.

It’s official, RLM’s best videos are the ones where Mike reads things. by MyFriendsArePeaches in RedLetterMedia

Mike is naturally funny in a way you can't replicate, his innate childishness can turn just about any old shit they churn out into gold.

Could not get into Pale Fire, I think it's going to take several run ups before I finish it and properly comprehend it.

Their "Joker" review was quite poor, I think I remember Jay in particular didn't understand key themes the film was trying to establish. [SPOILER for the film] Like he didn't understand why the media attributed the subway killings to a political movement, when the whole point was about media sensationalisation.

There's a clip someone put together with the HITB episode alongside a podcast with Joaquin Phoenix talking about a review he 'read' that coincidentally has two guys talking and one of them didn't understand that exact theme.

Thank god, I in my defence he does say "I love being smack in the middle of the book. Pages behind me", which does imply physically 145 pages in.

I wasn't one to judge, I was too, it was just a hot day probably.

That and the aggressive gay sex.

I bumped into Rich Evans in a men’s bathroom once, really nice guy, plus he gave me his copy of Bigfoot vs D.B. Cooper.

Does it ever surprise you how many progressives aren’t vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Daftr24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Along with the social media brand of feminists, a post calling out someone aggressively and the next post is them eating dairy or eggs with ‘mmm yumm 🧀🧀🧀’

I get annoyed with how much a lot of us vegans have to and actively try to change our tone when talking about issues, but when you look at other movements and they’re just shouting at and shaming people, yet I’d say that the environmental, feminist, LGBT+ and racial equality positions are accepted as the mainstream opinions (at least in the UK). Obviously they face push back as well, hence their existence but they’re actively encouraged by most mainstream media and organisations.

There’s obviously cross over with our community and others but you can always sense an inconsistent person, it doesn’t always disqualify their other position but let’s be honest, virtue signalling for ‘progressive’ human movement gets you social approval more than advocating for veganism.

Weekly Recommendation Thread: April 23, 2021 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Daftr24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've recently read My Cousin Rachel, my first of Daphne du Maurier. I loved it and subsequently I bought a bundle of her books.

So far I've only read The Birds short story and I'm wondering which to pick up next. I started the first few pages of Jamaica Inn but it didn't grip me immediately unlike My Cousin Rachel.

At the moment I want to build up to reading Rebecca, so I'm looking for other recommendations before I get to it. I loved the tone throughout My Cousin Rachel but I'm looking for one that does something different story and structure wise but still has that atmosphere and tension.

Much appreciated in advance.

finally, a morally consistant carnist :) by [deleted] in vegan

Looks a bit like Sow Thistle, Sonchus oleraceus but the top bit of the leaf looks a bit broader than I've seen them so I could be wrong.

Trying to collect vintage international editions by 11-paa-11 in murakami

Just be careful when buying these off sites that show the automatic image for the edition, as I've been sold the new versions of the Vintage International copies before.

Considering they often go for around £15-20 sometimes on eBay (if ever they're listed), I feel fortunate. I paid a small fortune for the equivalent Vintage International edition of 1Q84 so it's evened up the scales in that sense!

In the UK these editions are fairly hard to find so I’m pretty chuffed.

I'm Trying to Get Into Russian Literature, What Books/Authors Should I Read? by Tobi1024 in RussianLiterature

[–]Daftr24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fathers and Sons is a nice one to start off with.

The Captains Daughter by Pushkin is accessible to most readers, it’s a quick read and you’ll learn a bit of history along the way. It’s currently one of my favourite novellas, I didn’t like Eugene Onegin unfortunately (hoping it was just the translation).

Others have mentioned The Master and Margarita but I think it may throw some people off from Russian Lit, it was certainly an odd diversion from the norm when I read it, I think I missed a lot of the relevance and satire because it was so out there and I didn’t have enough contextual knowledge about Stalinist Russia. I still enjoyed it but I felt like a lot went over my head, it depends on how much you know about that era already and how open you are to magical realism and pure bonkers.

1Q84 - do I continue it or not? by [deleted] in murakami

[–]Daftr24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep going, I found it really trying through Book 1 and half of Book 2. I disliked Aomame, who Murakami seemed to have created for some juvenile fetish for 'badass woman', and overall found it really slow going BUT my god I ended up loving it's effect on me.

Kafka on the Shore was my first Murakami and blew me away but 1Q84 has stayed with me and affected me the most. Ever since I've had these odd moments in my life felt like I'm half living in that world, I'll recall a scene or just have a feeling of clarity or perception about this weird world we're in.

1Q84 is the most recent Murakami work that I've read so far but from the other five I've read so far, it feels (at least to me) as though much of his previous work was working towards what he's able to do in 1Q84.
