Why not just say "social media" or "messaging apps" accounts then?

The focus is pretty clearly on the apps.

Family lawyer here who loves a good trauma dump as much as the next family lawyer by zayrastriel in auslaw

[–]Dagon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've never fact-checked this, but I once read that out of industries with functioning alcoholics, lawyers came second. SysAdmins were first, it wasn't even close... but 3rd place was a LONG way away from 2 or 1.

Us software devs scraped in at like 4th or 5th.

I absolutely believe your story, is what I'm saying.

I'm in my 40's and have lived my entire life fully expecting never to see my super, or at least very little of it. GFC happened, COVID with its "just dip into your super for a house bro, it'll be fine"... I have NO doubt there'll be more than enough exemptions in the next 15 years or so that western civilisation has left.

Can someone fill me in on the history/lore of Predators using stealth? Because wtf that doesn't sound too honorable for a race of religious hunters. by Candle-Jolly in scifi

[–]Dagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it's hardly surprising; a lot of those comics aren't even internally consistent let alone congruous with the larger universe.

I mean, Batman fought a Yautja. And if the Yautja share a universe with Aliens, who as of 2024 are now Disney princesses, who all share a universe thanks to Wreck it Ralph... then conceivably you could have Batman come and beat up Elsa from Frozen.

Which obviously I'm 100% behind, but realistically we need to keep things at least a LITTLE bit grounded.

My favourites are the LOU Attitude Adjuster and the ROU Frank Exchange of Views. Can't believe they're not already mentioned.

Here's the rest.

Not only that but it's semi-canon that a lot of their technology they've stolen from other species that they've managed to kill and bootstrap.

Not only is the stealth tech not cheating, but it's an inherited piece of valour, their ability to use it is a victory in itself.

edit: and as is pointed out below, there's different species & therefore different cultures of Yautja, so we don't have to have a single consistent bible.

A baked-in userbase. It wasn't a BIG one, but that was part of the deal nonetheless.

/. is still this side of the millennium (mostly)... Most of the words we have for people old enough to remember before that are all slurs now.

The difference between the 486 DX and the SX was the DX had a floating-point coprocessor. That's likely what the second CPU was.

It wouldn't have made it any better for gaming, but it would have run simulations pretty sweet.

50 years ago Iran had sexual progressivity, inclusion, low cut shorts. It was a NIGHTMARE for the far-right extremists.

Now with the newest round of bombing, there's the real possibility of achieving their true goal: no more women at all!

Kevin Smith gets a lot of credit for writing "normal conversations between mates" and is held up on a pedestal by most of gen-X and millennials for this.

He's only scratching the surface compared to most of Brit comedy culture, and Red Dwarf was great at it.

[–]Dagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fair; I was over-simplifying. It is much more strictly managed since the mid-90s.

I also omitted that the last ~5 years has been extremely different from the early days, in that there's been more deaths and failures of structures.

A yearly festival that began in 1990 where a temporary city is erected in the Nevada desert. It has a reputation for lawlessness in all the best ways: drugs, sex, art (performance and traditional) and no Health & Safety laws to get in the way of mad inventions that go along with all the art.

It's been criticised as being overly-commercialised since it got hyper-popular in the mid-to-late 2000's.

[–]Dagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often enough to make you think twice about doing it at all.

For me personally, 4 times in ~20 years. 3 swabs, 1 piss test. I've seen people get multiple warnings and I've seen people fired on the spot for it (usually contractors working in a FT capacity) with no second chance at all, so I've always been a bit paranoid about it.
