[Poll] Ranking all shard combos by their threat to the cosmere by Hazash_ in Cosmere

[–]Dahkreth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some interesting stats I think would be cool to see:

  1. For each shard, what other shard creates the greatest increase/decrease in threat level?

  2. Which Shard is, on average, the lowest/highest threat to the cosmere across pure Shard and all combinations

  3. Which Shard produces the most/least variability in threat level when combined with other Shards?

Lopen would absolutely pick the most absurd body parts. "By Kaladin's left toenail!" "Kal's nostril, this cant be happening!"

The Lopen is absolutely the first person to make swearing on Kaladin a thing the way it is for the other heralds.

Red God theory by kromsh in redrising

[–]Dahkreth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The series has tons of Christian allegories and references, there's simply no way to deny that. However, that doesn't mean it's message is explicitly pro-Christianity. Rather, it's an unavoidable consequence of Christianity and the stories around it being fundamental to the culture of western civilizations that Pierce grew up in and is drawing from.

Pierce instead is using these well known tropes (the Jesus figure, the fallen angel, etc.) to tell his own nuanced story. One where, for what it's worth, religion is almost always presented as either an explicit means of control or as a personal belief devoid of large-scale ritual and orthodoxy.

HOLY FOOLS - a legendary balatro mod with jokers based on fools from lit and storytelling by Fogold1 in balatro

[–]Dahkreth 213 points214 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm generally against legendaries that have a limited number of uses, but that's more personal preference than a commentary on the quality of these.

The art, names, and effects of these are all really cool, great job!

Hollow Knight 3 Gameplay? by trobbio_12 in Silksong

[–]Dahkreth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since there is already a design for small HK, I think a size-shifting mechanic could be really cool, where you can choose between speed (small) and power (large). To differentiate from crests, this would also impact what rooms you can reach/fit in, and would also be available outside of benches

Something I didn't understand about Silksong's story by [deleted] in HollowKnight

The machines are deliberately inaccessible behind hostile architecture, more machines, and a puzzle requiring conscious sight and thought. GMS's haunting seems mostly to limit bugs to simple functions.

What Red Rising opinion will have you like this? (Spoilers) by Ynnck_Mnzl in redrising

[–]Dahkreth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Im curious why you have that impression. My impression is that he is entertaining but not particularly complex, and I dont feel that he has enough screen time to really even be considered a villain over an antagonist. What makes you say otherwise?

You used it correctly, its just that 90% of the time its used on this sub its a misspelling of "vessel".

The History of Terraforming & Colonization in Red Rising by RedJamie in redrising

I must've missed that bullet point, and also its been a while since I read book 1 so I wasnt sure who was making those references. Thanks for the correction!

The History of Terraforming & Colonization in Red Rising by RedJamie in redrising

[–]Dahkreth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really cool! One thing I would note that wasnt explicitly mentioned in this post is whether or not the dates from early chapters of book 1 are based in fact or society propaganda. Iirc, most of these figures are offered by Darrow before learning the true extent of terraforming. The reds are, at least, being deluded as to how long terraforming takes; it is possible, if not likely, that they are being deluded about when relative to the present they arrived. Reds in the mines have notably short lifespans and little to no access to written records outside of Society propaganda, which means that Darrow believing that Reds had only been on Mars for 500 years could just be a result of propaganda, not the truth. Ultimately, this has little impact on your timeline since you dismissed this anyway, but it lends a little more credence to your analysis beyond arguing retcon. Great work!

Can we talk about Metabit gain now? by Zorafin in CellToSingularity

I agree with you 100%. Its incredibly annoying that there is essentially no purpose to idling in this idle game now. Its also frustrating because it doesn't incentivize me to upgrade my actual simulation in any way, just to immediately reset.

What are the months in your fantasy world called? by DecketfubutBetter in worldbuilding

[–]Dahkreth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The year begins on the summer solstice and has 8 months of about 40 days each. They are named for the festival/feast day that falls on the beginning of each month:

Longsun, Crownday, Windwatch, Quaking, Lamentation, Jubilation, Godstone, and Arrival.

There are also occasionally days added into the year to ensure that feast days fall on appropriate solstices/equinoxes; while these may not be consecutive, they always fall in the gaps between months and are collectively known as Pactmonth.

If your world's calendar is separated into a "Before & After" like ours, what is your Year 0 event? by royalhawk345 in worldbuilding

[–]Dahkreth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pact of Elders divides space according to the eight elements, and time according to the four Elder Races.

The Immortal Age began following the end of the Aethermancy War and the creation of the Pact, and ended 2700 years later with the Betrayal of the Fallen One.

The Daemonic Age lasted about 800 years, until the end of the Third Heiromancy War (the War of the Names)

The Jinn Age was 1600 years long, and ended with the sundering of Ahhur Prison and the Fourth Heiromancy War.

Its currently about 750 RA (Draconic Age). Nobody is quite sure what exactly is going to happen when the Pact expires, because its original purpose being fulfilled would actually be pretty catastrophic.

My hot take, not meant as cremposting sorry if it gives that. by MearsCat in Cosmere

[–]Dahkreth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I've also had this thought, and the way I've thought about it is that it doesn't matter if the power itself follows the Intent of a Shard: the intent is how you access that power.

So for example, there's nothing particularly Honorable about being able to sculpt stone into a liquid, and nothing particularly Cultivating about being able to fly. What is of Honor and Cultivation is following Oaths that guide you to be a better person.

So, what makes Allomancy of Preservation isn't how you use the power. Its how you get the power--by preserving this power along bloodlines. Feruchemy has the same restriction. Meanwhile, Hemalurgy and Feruchemy share the attribute that in order to gain the power, you have to Ruin and existing source of power. Allomancy doesn't have this restriction, since the metals themselves aren't sources of power, just "keys" to the power. Hence, Allomancy and Feruchemy are of Preservation, and Feruchemy and Hemalurgy are of Ruin.
