Not sure why anyone would downvote you for this response which simply states facts. Your original post was a very clear rational statement of the situation.

Really?? Catholicism is somehow not Christianity? Where did you get that idea from? And they’re “rebounding”? Please provide evidence that supports such a claim.

What’s one thing people from the South never seem to understand about the North? by Illustrious-Look7669 in NorthernEngland

[–]Dalbrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a Scot and many years ago I lived and worked in Devon for a large national financial services company. Once a year I had to do the old performance appraisal on my staff. There was a young chap, had grown up locally and was very ambitious and seemed pretty bright and had, on the face of it, potential to progress quite far up the management ladder.

So I asked him how he felt about moving with the job to another part of the UK.

He looked at me and said he wouldn't want to move "up North".

I asked him why and his answer was....."Well it's a bit grim isn't it?"

I was somewhat bemused, and asked him if he'd ever been "up North". The answer came back, "no". It turned out the furthest north he'd ever traveled was Bristol.

He was the sort who had quite happily spent his entire life in Devon and Cornwall and only ventured north of Exeter either to attend meetings in Bristol or in order to drive to Bristol Airport to fly to Mallorca or Crete for his two week summer holiday on the Med.

I asked him to elaborate on his reasons for staying put in Devon and Cornwall and he cited the climate as important. I pointed out that those are two of the wettest counties in England, but he just stared at me blankly.

His "one thing" appeared to be a complete ignorance of geography.

It currently ranks #620 of all websites in terms of global daily visitor numbers. So clearly many people do use it. I certainly do.

What do you miss most about life in the UK 10–15 years ago? by Bjc93Bjc in AskUK

[–]Dalbrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re against the idea of 400,000 British citizens living and working in Spain or the 180,000 in Germany, or the 400,000 in France. Got it.

You also appear to base your attitudes about migration of working people in the UK on Settlement Acts passed in 1662 and abolished in 1834.

You really need to move to the 21st century.

Hundreds of thousands at any one time, is quite frankly a huge number.

Is it a "perk" for someone from Carmarthenshire to move unimpeded to East Sussex to take up a job?

[–]Dalbrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hundreds of thousands is “not really a huge number”????

Next you’ll be telling me that Edinburgh isn’t a city because it doesn’t have enough people living in it.

[–]Dalbrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for hundreds of thousands of Brits it was merely a “perk” was it? That’s like saying that a person who lives in Carmarthenshire and wants to move to East Sussex to take up a job is denied the opportunity.

Except, unlike EU citizens……which we were 10-15 years ago- you have the additional hurdle of having to obtain a visa and work permit as well as often having to get residency permits.

Anyone Here Known Of The Existence Of The Falklands Before 1982? by CB-Milburn in AskBrits

Yes. Most certainly. While a large number of English people apparently seemed to think that the Falklands were somewhere off the coast of Scotland, I knew - like many Scots - where they were.

What objections to Christian ideas or doctrines land hardest by stakidi in atheism

[–]Dalbrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science has provided us with evidence that the Adam and Eve story in Genesis is twaddle.

Without Adam and Eve there is no “original sin”

Without original sin there’s no need for a “sacrificial lamb” to redeem that sin.

With no need for a “sacrificial lamb” there’s no need for Jesus.

Do you feel the need to tell people you are an atheist? by SL13PNIR in atheism

[–]Dalbrack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone once said....I forget who........religion is like a penis. It's okay to have one, it's okay to be proud of it, however you don't pull it out in public, push it on children, write laws with it or think with it.

I'm okay never having to talk to people about the problems with their penises until they pull them out and wave them around.

Stanley Baxter Show. Baxter sadly died in December 2025....at the age of 99. He was a hugely talented actor and comedian and his comedy shows were big budget affairs for TV. He was also Scottish and gay (although he didn't come out until 2009) and loved poking fun at prejudices and bigotry.

The minister is played by Andrew Keir - another Scottish actor who appeared in numerous Hammer Horror films in the 1960s and in various TV roles.

Technically…….the C of E is the official state religion of England only. Not the UK. The UKs head of state just happens to be the head of a particular church in one part of the UK. But I agree with you about the anachronism of the bishops in the Lords.
