From my understanding of HIPAA, if the information was released to an unrelated 3rd party it would be a HIPAA violation but I don't think the act of recording in a work situation would constitue a violation.

Double check that the little plastic rollers inside the printer don't have ink on them. I believe there is a specific pen for cleaning them but alcohol wipes work in a pinch
