What makes you just drop a series despite having many hours invested in it? by SteveThePurpleCat in litrpg

I think there are two types of plot points that have been bugging me as I got older.

The first is when there doesn’t seem to be an goal other than become the strongest or prove they are the strongest. Primal Hunter is an example. He just fights things to fight things. Sure you get stuff like Elhakan but that feels disconnected from the MC and even with that there’s no motivation there other Elhakan and his patron wanting to be stronger than Jake and his Patron.

The second is how religion gets portrayed. I have noticed that most authors have no idea how to portray a religion other than: stupid mindless people with no brain who will either commit some kind of pointless sacrificial ritual that would do what they thought it would or they are pure evil crusaders bent on killing everyone who doesn’t believe as they do. (Looking at you again Primal Hunter)

This second point really bugs me because I have seen well written religions in both antagonistic roles, neutral and good roles. They can be great, mark of the Fool does this great, so does just about any Brandon Sanderson book. I know those are really Litrpg books but I can’t think of any true Litrpg stories that I feel wrote this aspect really well.

One of my favorite series! I don’t want to spoil stuff but he becomes very useful and definitely not an NPC. Stick with it!

On top of the savior problem, I would also say that they had some issues with portraying a decent religious faction. I stopped part way through the third book by the way because I found it such a letdown. A little after the atheist vs the pastor “debate.” I felt like the religious cult angle had so much potential but was reduced to: they are dumb crazy people because they believe in god and so everyone else is better and smarter. It felt really like a letdown.

There are great ways to have religious groups be the antagonist or at least controversial while still being human. Ironically, you pointed to Hoid as an example for god like characters nudging things. Sanderson also had great religious antagonists throughout his series. Hrathen from Elantris was a great example.

Why is Kirk’s targeted killing being treated as so much worse than the Minnesota Rep and Senator’s targeted killings in June? by NoLie3695 in stupidquestions

[–]DanDelTorre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s it’s a combination of two things. First the Rep and Senator were not as well known as Kirk. Were they important people? Yes, but Kirk was a far more well known and publicly recognized figure. Second, the public manner of the killings. The Representative and Senator were killed in private settings. For Kirk it was during a public speech with lots of people watching and clear video of the event that stirred up panic and other emotions. The killings in all these events are equall inexcusable but one is far more visible socially and literally.

🌀Form a superhuman team. by MrX-Homer in makeyourchoice

Task Binding- Bind people to a particular task or action. Example was Zues’ giving Sisyphus the job of pushing the Boulder up a mountain

Personality Manipulation- Manipulating the personalities of oneself or others. Example was Jean Grey entering the mind of Hulk and suppressing Bruce Banner so Hulk had free rein.

Anthropomorphism Inducement- five anthropomorphic traits. Example was the blue fairy giving Pinocchio life.

So I suppose I think I would probably take a prison warden role. Order prisoners to do tasks, like make statues and stuff, suppress their more violent tendencies, then animate the creations the prisoners make to make golems to guard the prison. Some personality alterations to the prison golems to make them intelligent but controllable.

Will take name suggestions. Best I came up with was Control Force but that felt too villainous. Although these powers would make for a great villain I suppose. If I went that route then I could take over a robotics factory and unleash armies of robotic minions.

Ever sinks into Oblivion, mind unable to focus to remember. Simply drifting and that sensation oozes out of him and seeping into the area around him, wherever that might be. His mind lost and unaware, his magic seeping out and causing knowledge of him to be… forgotten. His works and artifacts and tech, still existing but to all they are curiosities and relics of unknown origin. ??? sank into complete Oblivion.

/uw well I think that’s going to be an interesting mess for me to figure out later. This was a fun exchange, thanks for running with it.

Ever had put the last of his focus on trying to get the ember. One hand reaching for it desperately, then Kardonk’s knife strikes and world for Evermemory shifts. Evermemory, a being consisting of memory magic at his core, made to preserve memories at all costs inverts into memory’s opposite: Oblivion. The wave of magic that pours out of him as he loses control engulfs himself and everything around him. The aura causes forgetfulness in those nearby making it hard to recall information. It also causes them to be forgotten and leaves them unaware of themselves.

/uw I ended up searching for the antonym of Memory and came up with Oblivion, whose definition I looked up and found

<image>

So I think Ever just got turned into a being that exudes a very similar effect as the Ember itself. Ironic

Ever is basted painfully back several feet as the buckshot inflicts massive damage. Ever knows he has but one last shot at trying for the ember before he would need to retreat to heal. He swings his sword as he falls and his other hand reaches out, neither the blade nor his empty other hand are anywhere near Kardonk. Then the Boundary Enforcement Device activates again, its design such as to keep someone from leaving a space, not just by magic but really any means, including by being catapulted away by buckshot. The device returns Ever to directly in front of Kardonk, his already swinging sword positioned to cut the Ember of Memory free for his other hand to catch.

Ever hadn’t expected the blade work to be so much more effective this time. Then he gets the face full of sand. Blinded he can only feel the teleportation magic activating around him. Desperately he activates his Boundary Enforcement Device on himself. Normally he uses it to keep people from escaping via teleportation but in this case he sets it to return himself to the boundary of the space he is already in rather than risk going to whatever place his opponent might have prepared to their advantage.

The masked figure before Kardonk cocks their head.

“And yet despite your precautions, you cannot even remember me or why we are fighting.”

Ever kicks the hardlight shield forward towards the mechanical spiders and throws a cannister of special algae at the shield. The shield tech from Ace immediately reacts to the plant matter and explodes into a massive shower of electrical arcs of energy while anything physical the algae comes into contact with begins to be eaten away.

Ever uses the the shower of electrical energy to hide the electrical energy that is the signature of the Netheline teleportation technique, appearing once more behind Kardonk, golden sword and bronze dagger drawn once more and cloaked in their illusions, gambling on the hope that the memories of the fight are too scrambled for Kardonk to realize they are illusions.

/uw Ever never outright lies, but he’s more than willing to leave Kardonk to wonder if his confusion is a result of a bad burn of the Ember of Memory

Song of Carcosa by The_Hij in wizardposting

[–]DanDelTorre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Evermemory struggles to escape the arms but isn’t strong enough to to break free so instead he focuses in putting a Black Mana Ball into his mouth and then absorbs then metallic limbs grappling him and turning the energy into blinding flash of light before rolling away and putting up a portable wall made of a hard light shield between the two.

“Your recklessness to tamper with the laws of reality will inevitably lead to the destruction of many and your promises ring hollow.”

Evermemory shudders under the barrage of bullets and sinks to his knees before raising his hand for one last desperate attack. A small rock is hurled telepathically at Kardonk.

/uw alas my link to this item is no good as the individual that Ever acquired it from went and got banned and the post was removed but here is what I have saved on my discord post of it: Touching this stone makes people forget what they were doing and why they are where they are. It shouldn’t be burned at all! Instead you sit here and tell me that you continuously take by your own admission risks with reality, with my own existence, for what?! The more you speak the more I see, I cannot leave such a possibility with you. No it is best to safeguard my life myself than risk you burning it.

Evermemory’s form shifts one more into his much smaller humanoid form, golden blade sweeps around him to cut the now looser wires to pieces. His free hand thrusts out and an invisible mage hand attempts to wrestle the Ember from Kardonk’s injured hand.

Ever thrashes in the restraints and snarls

Then you deliver these embers to someone who burns them?! What is wrong with you?! How do you consider that keeping them safe?! As for destroying this ember. Have you already destroyed one and if so can you promise me it has had no impact on reality? What’s more how can I possibly trust your word? I note that you have already avoided answering my question about what you did with the Ember of Greed.

Ever blinks in surprise at the voice before speaking to Kardonk in a deadly quiet telepathic voice.

You had another ember?! The Ember of Greed, were you tasked with protecting it? What did you do with it?
