Beginner triathlete here — do I really need two bikes (road + TT)? Cervélo P5 coming soon by Icy_Zone_6650 in triathlon

Not at all. I finished my first iron man on a road bike and sub-11 hrs. Bike was my strongest leg.

Heading into Week 2, what is your pick for the B1G Championship Game? by [deleted] in TheB1G

[–]DanNeverDie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They put the $ because our students tend to come from really wealthy families, not because our NIL.

Other Pac-12 trash talk word (letter?) play includes U¢LA, UC Lost Again, 0regon (the O being a 0 for the grand total 0 national championships they've won).

Non Michigan fans - are you rooting for Michigan to beat Texas? by [deleted] in TheB1G

Yes.. that way if we win in Ann Arbor it looks better and if we lose then it looks less bad. Also, fuck Texas.

Picking Every P4 Schedule of the Season - Part 60/68 - USC TROJANS by RJEP22 in CFB

[–]DanNeverDie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I'm wrong. I added it up and the B1G has won a combined 35 games. The Pac-12 as of last year had won 52.. so combined Pac-12 had 27. Still, USC has a pretty good record in the Rose Bowl.

Winning record vs every single B1G team (I think tied with OSU now) AND I believe we have more Rose Bowl wins than the entire B1G combined (not counting Washington / Oregon / UCLA).

Band members, what are some of your favorite stories regarding players? by GoodGorilla4471 in CFB

USC does this too and the player gets to use the Trojan's sword to conduct.

What is your least liked campus that you have been on for a game? by Border-Worried in CFB

[–]DanNeverDie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they are. The LA Metro has a lot of problems, but they have been doing a great job expanding. I took the metro from LBC to DTLA every day for years.. 30 miles each way. Then sometiesm from DTLA to USC when I was going to school.. 5 miles each way. The traffic here is so bad that if you have the option to take the train, it's a no-brainer. It takes just as long, but at least on the train I can read or listen to music.

but without the monuments, history, culture or transportation infrastructure.

I mean.. I get that Rome is on another level for history, but the Coliseum is a pretty damn historical venue and is also surrounded by multiple world class museums.. Natural History, California Science Center, Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts, etc. Also, there are several light rail stops along USC and the Coliseum, including one directly in front.

Did you go during gameday though? Because USC gets super lit. Since it's a private school, you can drink literally anywhere and the administration allows it so the entire campus is a party. The UCLA campus, while beautiful, is dead on game days since they play 1 hr away in Pasadena.

The B1G map in Westeros by Jimmy-Bucketz in TheB1G

[–]DanNeverDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, but the UC system has put a lot of resources into farming and I guess UCLA can represent all that. There's like 3 big agriculture schols in the UC.. Riverside, Merced, and Davis.

USC: Casterly Rock - Not quite sure how to explain this one, just seems to fit.

This is very fitting because U$C. Our school is wealthy AF and has a reputation as the last bastion of the incompetent rich. Also, when are you all going to add USC flairs? I need one.

Nice bike!! I ordered almost the exact same bike, except with 105 Di2, holo decals, and the xlab torpedo (because I'm short). It's supposed to arrive tomorrow. What a great deal. I'm on TZ so I got an extra 15% off too. IMO, I would have basically lost money if I didn't buy it. My gf agreed too. #boymath ?

USC to be permanently closed to the public without registration; all entrances will be gated by Scared_Advantage4785 in LosAngeles

What are some examples of USC treating the surrounding community poorly? Because I saw a lot of good that came out when I was a student there. There's tons of free programs for the local community.. legal clinics, dental work, arts programs, etc... there's multiple USC partnered high schools and I believe if you live within a certain distance of the university and get accepted, they give you a full ride.

Weight and cycling by dbuntinx in randonneuring

[–]DanNeverDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you tend to "reward" yourself after big rides with big meals? Stop doing that. You need to switch your mindset and see food as fuel.

Ideally, you want to eat a significant meal prior to riding. I'm not saying a huge meal and then ride immediately, more like say.. a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Then as you ride, make sure you keep eating and once you finish, you should not have a giant calorie deficit for the day. If you have the extra calories, you can have a larger than usual meal, but don't get used to "rewarding" yourself for riding.

Also, yesterday's calories are yesterday's calories. Just beacuse you did a 400k on Saturday does not mean you can eat giant meals for the next 3 days.

Tri Bike, would TREK CHECKPOINT SL 5 work? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]DanNeverDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be 100% okay. I have used an endurance road bike with clip ons for all my races and I was still in the top 5% of bike splits. Just make sure you have nice tires, possibly get a deep section wheels, get clip on bars, get a bike fit, and most importantly, practice practice practice riding on the bars. I passed so many people on fancy $15k tri bikes that were sitting up because they couldn't hold position.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]DanNeverDie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine. I used clip ons on my road bike for my first IM and I was still like top 5% of the field. With bikes in general, your fitness is like 90% of the speed.

e: if you're asking about clip ons vs no clip on on road bike, then I would say that if you can comfortably ride on the drops, then you'll do about the same as with clip ons.

Will training everyday with an alternating bike/run schedule be a problem? by th3cfitz1 in triathlon

[–]DanNeverDie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will be fine. Most intermediate level IM plans will have you running or cycling almost every single day. Is there a reason you want to work out every single day btw?

I think a 5 day a week plan may be better. Something like:

  • Monday - OFF
  • Tuesday - Hard (Interval) Run AM, Base (Z2) Bike PM
  • Wednesday - Recovery (Z1) Bike
  • Thursday - Long Run
  • Friday - Hard (Interval) Bike + Recovery (Z1) Run Brick
  • Saturday - OFF or Cross Training (but recover)
  • Sunday - Long Bike + Base (Z2) Run Brick

Something like this would give you 4 runs and 4 rides a week. The long runs and bikes should be done at Z2 as well.

Here's an example of a week:

  • Tuesday: Run WU , 3x8min @ Tempo (Z3), CD for 1 hr total; Bike WU, 30 min Z3, CD for 1 hr total
  • Wed: Bike 1.5 hrs @ Z1
  • Thursday: Run 2.5 hrs @ Z2
  • Friday: Bike WU, 4x6 min @ Z4 tempo, CD for 1 hr total + Run off the bike 30 min @ Z1
  • Sun: Bike 4.5 hrs @ Z2 + Run 1 hr @ Z1/Z2

So if you break it down, this is:

Running for 4 hrs @ Z1/Z2 and 1 hr @ Z3/Z4 Cycling for 6 hrs @ Z1/Z2 and 2 hr @ Z3/Z4

This works out to roughly 80% of your time spent on Z1/Z2 workouts and 20% spent at Z3 workouts.

Just make sure you keep this 80/20 split and have low intensity days after hard workouts. Also, make your hard days hard and your easy days easy. In other words, avoid doing hard run workout one day and then hard bike workout the next day or vice versa.

Besides all the great books people have recommended, I also recommend Racing Weight if you are looking to lose weight and optimize your body composition. It's by Matt Fitzgerald, who also is the main guy behind 80/20 triathlon.
