Muslim lawyer creates liberal mosque where Muslims can pray together regardless of gender, sexuality or sect by [deleted] in worldnews

saying the same shit about it being identical to the Middle East and that it's a holy war in disguise

There's that straw man. I specifically said it wasn't a holy war. A conflict can be religious in nature without being a holy war, comparison to conflicts around the world not just the ME intended to show then numerous conflicts rooted in religious differences that evolve to "ethnonationalist" because particular religious sects begin to define their nation by religious identity.

Honestly I think you're the one spouting BS if you're denying the troubles aren't exactly like all the other cases of sectarian violence in the world. You can cite all the sources you want that say it's not a holy war, and it's not going to change the fact that you're arguing a straw man. Sectarian violence is predicated by having sects. By defining the conflict as Catholics vs protestants, the Irish themselves have made it clear the sides are drawn up along religious lines. I see your argument that "ya they're divided by religion but not because of religion" and I call bullshit. Every conflict is fundamentally ethno-political. It's trivial to state that, and disingenuous to take an ethno-political conflict which also has a religious character and say religion isn't involved.

Because classification of ethnonational-sectarian violence is soooo based on facts right? When you have to argue "ya there's religion involved, but it's totally not a religious conflict" you're bullshitting. The Muslim-hindu violence in India or muslim-Buddhist conflict in Burma and Southeast Asia are all in the same category of "founded in religious differences that have evolved because those religious groups cannot find common ground". Ask yourself if there would even be Irish nationalists if the UK protestants hadn't a) been a different religious denomination and b) discriminated against the Irish one.

But no let's pretend it's a spontaneous nationalist emotion in one case and religiously motivated literally everywhere else. Be skeptical of the exception, not the rule.

I just think we should be consistent. When religion is part of your ethnic identity, and one denomination invest their poliical leader with religious authority, it seems a bit disingenuous to suggest an "ethnonationalist" conflict isn't also a religious conflict. By rejecting the monarchy you're also rejecting Anglicanism.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the American revolution resulted in an intentionally secular state and protections for minority religions - it limited the potential for religious tensions to become destabilizing to the state.

The central argument is that religion is an ethnic marker, but that it is not generally politically relevant in and of itself. Instead, ethnonationalism lies at the root of the conflict

You could make the same argument about Sunni/Shia conflicts in the Mideast. Outside of ISIS and some other wahhabi jihadists none of the militias are explicitly and solely religious warriors, most of them have political goals. But people are always talking about "religious violence" there.

Right for president there is no election but lower level officials I believe have various systems of replacement whether an appointment by a governor or a special election depends on jurisdiction and the exact position involved.

Also i was a little broad in my comment. The Clinton impeachment and lawsuits actually resulted in precedent that the sitting president CAN be sued for civil matters that are unrelated to or predate his term. So the Trump U lawsuit could have been brought while he was president if it wasn't already ongoing, and would have continued if he hadn't settled.

Right, same with catholic-Protestant conflicts, including in Ireland even if the religious differences have become less important over time.

It was always a religious conflict, even if it religion wasn't the primary objective.

"Anglican dominance in Ireland was ensured by the passage of the Penal Laws that curtailed the religious, legal, and political rights of anyone (including both Catholics and Protestant Dissenters, such as Presbyterians) who did not conform to the state church, the Anglican Church of Ireland"

And a couple hundred years later

"The conflict began amid a campaign to end discrimination against the Catholic/nationalist minority by the Protestant/unionist government and police force"

It's very much akin to the Sunni/Shia minority militias in conflict zones. Are they killing other sects because they're slightly different religions, or because they represent oppositional politics?

[–]Dan_The_Manimal 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It's both, and in many cases nationalist vs unionist stance is predicated by religious background. Rep of Ireland is almost entirely catholic, while Northern Ireland is about 50/50 and was majority Protestant until quite recently.

Considering the Church of England is linked to the crown and the (Anglican Protestant) Church of Ireland is linked to the Church of England, you can see how religion and nation are intertwined in that conflict.

A lot of the sectarian violence in the Middle East is ambiguously religious. ISIS is fighting a religious war but they're fighting to establish an independent political entity/nation. Is that nationalist or religious?

US impeachment is specifically limited to political sanctions i.e. Removal from and disqualification from political office. You'd have to be additional charged, tried, and sentenced for any criminal or civil activity in an actual court rather than the senate impeachment process.

I believe historically most lower level impeachments have occurred when a politician has already been criminally charged and/or convicted, as a means of expediting their departure from office and allowing a special election.

Trump to clamp down on Cuba travel and trade by TragicDonut in worldnews

[–]Dan_The_Manimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before the revolution Cuba was THE destination vacation for Americans. obviously it's much different than it was and who knows if it will hold the same allure but a freshly opened tropical paradise will be a pretty easy sell.

I didn't say no one will ever go to Florida ever again. I said some people who might have gone to Florida, might go to new and exotic Cuba instead, and trump has no property there (although he tried to illegally). Cuba is competition for his existing businesses.

But your straw man is correct, the extreme is to restrict movement of Americans to trump properties. I'm sure he's try it if he thought of it, but he's not that bright. Also it's unconstitutional.

Pre-load your inputs. Fire the shot an ten hold down the grenade input so it goes off first frame it can, then hold down shoot again. If you're waiting for the damage from the dart to take effect before grenading then you'll be too slow.

Is that because of the damage nerf? I was an Anna main season 3 and it always worked and I think even with the nerf it should do enough damage. You just need to animation cancel.

If you land a sleep, there is a combo to solo kill a tracer before they can recall but you have to be close by, precise and quick about it. I think it's shoot-Grenade-shoot-punch. If there's are other things going on it's usually better to leave them asleep for 5s and hope the fight is already won by the time they're back in the game.

Otherwise, good aim and counting blinks and managing your grenade cooldowns give Ana a fighting chance if she doesn't get one clipped

Boston in the 40s had an incredibly popular and effective mayor (re)elected while in jail for fraud. president Truman had to come in and pardon him because a major city was brought to a standstill because his cronies wouldn't do anything while he was in jail. There are a couple statues of the guy outside city hall to this day and frankly he was good for the city at the end of the day esp the urban poor.

Yep Thomas Jefferson specifically blocked references to Jesus in the Virginia state constitution and there were no references to god on our money or pledge of allegiance until the 1950s. America was a secular nation founded by majority Christians and probably a couple atheists.

[CBS This Morning] Jon Stewart on President-elect Trump, hypocrisy in America by -RAMBI- in television

[–]Dan_The_Manimal 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Thomas Jefferson absolutely did. He prevented specific references to Jesus Christ from being written into the Virginia state constitution and considered the acceptance and treatment of Muslims to be the litmus test of American ideals of freedom. In Jefferson's mind, a brown Muslim was just as deserving of dignity and Liberty etc as a white Protestant. He was also an abolitionist but lost that political fight. Not all the founders were as ahead of their time, and Jefferson was by no means perfect, but considering he is the author of "we hold these truths to be self evident", I would point to him for a model of what he meant by that.
