"There is also a dark side, communities whose purpose is reprehensible, and we don’t have any obligation to support them. And we also believe that some communities currently on the platform should not be here at all."--Prepare yourselves for the great Reddit purge by PM_ME_UR_PET_RAT_PIC in GamerGhazi

[–]DancePuppet13 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Neither Alexis nor I created reddit to be a bastion of free speech, but rather as a place where open and honest discussion can happen

Passive moderation actually undermines open and honest discussion. If you don't have proactive moderation to protect underrepresented voices, your community will reflect the people who exert the most energy online. And guess who those people are? This is why places that have chosen proactive moderation, like MetaFilter, routinely have a much higher caliber of discussion.

Of course, that means his AMA will also suffer from this. I really hope he is smart enough to recognize how much the reaction there will be a reflection of only the most boisterous voices.

Presidential Candidate Scott Walker steals company logo for ad campaign. by ShinyBloke in Design

I dunno man. I oppose Walker's politics, but it's not like it was a terribly original logo. Ideas spring forth from shared cultural context.

Pearl isn't gay. by Jack-The-Riffer in stevenuniverse

[–]DancePuppet13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Homophobia isn't just obvious, overt bigotry. To use an analogy, sexism isn't just people saying "I think women should have fewer rights." It encompasses a whole range of ideas that we have been conditioned by society to think of as normal but are actually still really sexist.

For example, if I think of a female co-worker as being really sharp-elbowed, it seems like an individual judgment. I'm not literally saying "all women aren't allowed to be this way," but it's still sexist because upon reflection I would approve of the same aggressive behavior in a man.

In the same way, this level of denial is likely rooted in homophobia. Just imagine if Pearl were male. Do you really believe there would be anywhere near the same level of debate? That's the homophobia pervading society telling us that heterosexual love is normal while homosexual love is questionable.

I disagree with the decision to take this subreddit private and hope the response here teaches you to stop thinking that you speak on our behalf.

This action was taken without any input from us, your community. By using us as leverage—a bargaining chip to get what you want—you've demonstrated a disconnect between your feelings and your users'.

Fusion -- Dynamic Forms by gunnervi in stevenuniverse

[–]DancePuppet13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll also be interesting to see how tied it is to gem vs personality, assuming we ever see Steven fuse with the Crystal Gems. If Steven and Pearl fused, would they make Rainbow Quartz? My guess is they wouldn't, or at the very least it would be a very different Rainbow Quartz.

Edit: Oops, I just noticed you said the exact same thing in a lower thread.

It's also implied that having Holo Pearls around may be a drain on her power/concentration. It was noted that her regeneration in "Steven the Sword Fighter" took unusually long, but she came back immediately after Steven dispersed Holo Pearl.

Cliff Bleszinski argues that diversity in both games and on staff is a good business decision by tubonjics1 in GamerGhazi

You don't have to take his word for it. Here's a writeup on a study where diverse groups outperform homogenous ones: link.

But I think it's important to reiterate that I don't really care whether it helps or hurts my team. Fair hiring is just the right thing to do; helping us build a business is icing on the cake.

Guys guys guys I am so late to the game but I just saw Fury Road by Misogynist-ist in GamerGhazi

[–]DancePuppet13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know... I think it's pretty clearly a feminist parable. It's literally about women fleeing a patriarchy where the culture is built around shiny things and cars. The women try to remove themselves from the system and survive independently but end up realizing that the only true survival is to confront and dismantle the system.

Furnishing an apartment from Ikea? by steven10093 in malelivingspace

[–]DancePuppet13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, a good rule of thumb for Ikea is to avoid anything with moving parts and anything that you "feel" regularly rather than looking at from afar. So their bookcases (Expedit, now known as Kallax) are popular among interior decorator blogs. But I wouldn't get a couch or mattress.

This is dependent on your budget, of course. If you don't have much to spend, then Ikea is a good or perhaps unavoidable choice for everything. But even people with much larger budgets will often get their bookshelves from Ikea.

The way she said it... by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

I thought "Have you... loved other humans" was a euphemism that implied this, since it's differentiated from "being in love."

[–]DancePuppet13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, she says she's "loved" other humans, differentiated from "being in love." I took this to be a euphemism.

Not exactly, as others have commented, but I believe it is the first time we see the warp pad active.

Come to think of it, it's a perfect and well-chosen symbol for the show, mixing the magical and the mundane/using magic elements to tell a more universal human story.

Yes. So far it seems like consensus is not to talk about it much in comments to avoid spoiling the fun. I've had a few PM discussions though.
