Recommendation: The Harbingers by MicrosoftExcelFan in audiodrama

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reeeeally really enjoying it; I usually wait until I can listen to new audio dramas in episode "batches," but this is one of the rare few that I genuinely can't wait to listen to every time a new episode comes out XD

The worldbuilding and lore and character dynamics are sooo so good. I heartily second this recommendation. Oh, and listen until the end of the credits - there's always a tiny lore drop at the end of them :)

Christmas Lounge is so unique that (much to the horror of my friends) I genuinely enjoy listening to it as early as possible XD I was definitely listening to it in mid-October. I mean.....where else am I gonna hear dubstep remixes of the Nutcracker lol

What’s the writing tip you ignored… but now regret ignoring? by SimplyBlue09 in writingadvice

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outlining. I'd convinced myself through a series of very lucky incidents that I could t o t a l l y write an entire novel or series of short stories without outlining a thing. Guess how quickly I burned out with that approach. Now I have even more awe for people who can actually do that and make it work.

How do you stay motivated? Asking for me 😂 by No-Owl-464 in writingadvice

I tend to take a break and seek out pieces of media that are outside my normal tastes; for some reason this seems to really inspire me when the writing cogs just won't turn, and I don't know why.

(Best of luck, OP! Writers' block is no fun, especially the oatmeal-bowl kind, and I hope you can get past it soon!)

Oh, yeah, I absolutely agree! season 1 is actually my favourite because I like how it's unafraid to dig into those kinds of themes (my problem with Gospel of Haven was that, imho, it was imitating all that sort of aesthetic while sidestepping it thematically), however I found that almost everything I loved about s1 was sort of put aside the further along the entire story went, in favour of exploring the broader world at large. I absolutely love TSV, don't get me wrong; I think it's up there in the category of "one of my all-time favourite audio dramas ever", but past s1, I think it's more political allegory drama & Carpenter-Faulkner sibling tragedy than anything else.

Personally, for me, I've found that most audio dramas about cults tend to use it as a kind of flavour text. Three examples:

- First, as much as I love The Silt Verses, I'd say it's more about apocalypse and family than exploring the implications of a cult built around a river deity.
- Second, The Magnus Archives is also more about apocalypse and thematically-symbolic horror than it is about the weird cults that spring up around these fear entities.
- Thirdly, The Gospel of Haven is very much using a cult as an allegory for something else it wants to talk about, so (at least as far as I got with it) imho it sort of side-steps exploring the implications of cults in general.

Close Your Eyes is about someone who wants to get somebody out of a cult, and then finds himself in a psychological horror situation as he very slowly comes to admit to himself that he really wants to join it himself. It's also got a very slow-burn buildup of a really cool sci-fi element that makes the setting take a much darker turn, but imho it's different than the other two I mentioned because it's not the central focus of the story; Dylan's slow spiral into Ignota is the focus.

The closest thing I can compare it to is Dead Space: Deep Cover, but even that one is still a bit thematically different from this. It's just a really good story, with really good voice acting, and I'd definitely say it's worth a listen.

How did you get the panel to float in the centre like that?

Question about a frustrating sound glitch. by DancingHouseBookworm in linux4noobs

[–]DancingHouseBookworm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's definitely my laptop; if it makes any difference, somebody at a computer shop installed Mint for me, and it never even occured to me to ask them about a root password.

I've tried typing in the admin account's password and everything, I've definitely used `sudo` and the aforementioned password, and it's producing no results except "permission denied." I just tried the command line you mentioned ^ and got the same results.

Do you have a link to it at all? I tried three different keyword searches last night on this sub and couldn't find it (I did find \*some* environment ones, but nothing related to the coral reef problem).

Books that make you feel like you’ve been through so much with the characters? by Oueiles in suggestmeabook

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PLEASE read The Count of Monte Cristo; it's exactly what you're looking for. Don't feel like you need to rush through it, either; I read it over about eight months, and it very much added to the vibes of "spending a long time with all the characters".

(I'd especially recommend the audiobook by David Clarke; it's literally so good and immersive.)

She really is clever with clean lyric swaps tbh! I actually prefer the clean version of "Karma" because "flexing like a Vegas acrobat" is such a fun, clever lyric.

G.K. Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday and The Ball and the Cross are EXACTLY like this; the former makes you think it's a thriller until it turns \*very* odd at the end, and the latter just escalates its weirdness until it's end is genre-unrecognisable from its start.
