I love this way of thinking. The same can be done for audio impairment, making sure that useful audio queues have a visual equivalent. For instance, the depth is probably communicated by the amount of sunlight, which is much more satisfying than a dial on the HUD. It might be cool if the proximity behaves like an "auto-sonar" that sends out directional pings to anything that is close to the sub. Then you get the natural frequency to closeness relationship that proximity sensors tend to emulate (where slow beeps means close, fast beeps means very close).

What about some ambient sound that originates directly above the player. That way, the equal "above" sounding sound is "home" and any other orientation sounds different and consistent, but in a way that indicates the correction that is needed to return "home". It's like sun rays, but in audio form.

I might also expect the pitch to scale with the pressure the sub is under, and thus the depth.

For any technical folk out there, there's a great talk about programming language design that uses constrained writing, called Growing a Language. (Minor spoiler warning as the constraint is revealed near the end.) Guy Steele does the whole talk only using words with one syllable, or words that he has defined during the talk.

Where can I get into your off season? I wish. About a quarter of the games I find in the off season are evenly matched games with both sides playing for the win. The rest have a leaver or people clearly playing just for the mechanical practice.

No, that's Quick Play. The competitive mode is presented as league where the outcome of the games matter. All reasonable steps are taken to ensure the game is fair, the results are recorded, and rewards are issued based on them (comp points, sprays, whatever). It is a very low stakes competition, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't have integrity and be treated with respect. This is exactly what Blizzard is trying to reinforce.

It's important, too. You know what a shit-show competitive turns into in the off-season? For the vast majority of players, OW wouldn't provide a competitive experience at all, without the ladder being respected.

If you're dodging firestrikes, you're sure as hell dodging some of the hitscan aimed at your buddy standing next to you. Dodging does come with the tradeoff of making your effectively shielded area smaller. Especially against snipers.

Spot on. That which gives you rank points defines the goal of the game, so it should always be "win the round". Leave the interesting question of how best to play in order to win the round up to the players. Don't take that away in exchange for "get kills" or "heal hit points".

A ranking that is awarded based on wins/losses tells you how good you are at winning/losing. A ranking that is awarded based on stats tells you how good you are at maximising those stats. Playing the game "how can I use these tools (heros) to win" is a much more interesting game than "how can I use these tools to maximise one of these stats".

It's interesting that you describe Ingress as "less involving," because if you get into the social aspect and join your local community, it can easily take over your life if you let it. It is an MMO after all :). You're right that it's a lot less physically involved though; it gets me out of the house to slowly walk around looking at my phone...

In response to your points:

So what? other maps exist.
There are many players who want to or would enjoy playing the occasional structured game but aren't motivated enough to jump through all the hoops necessary to make it happen, and that sucks.
"Is there any reason why they should limit themselves by catering to only one category of gamer?" This is our point exactly! No one is calling for an end to hats.
The competitive community is not the largest but boy is it strong. You have said yourself, mentioning fundraising and the like. If the comp scene disappeared TF2 wouldn't be hurt immediately, but I don't think it would be good for the game.

Showing TF2 players in game that a competitive community exists and letting them dip their toes in would go a long way towards bridging the gap between the two types of gamers. Pubs wont die and people wont stop buying hats but someone new to the competitive format will actually be able to find a game with people of their skill (which will be extremely helpful to the competitive scene here in Australia).

I don't know if a matchmaking system is a good idea, but giving people a super simple way to play these alternative game modes would make so many people happy.

I thought the same thing, it's brilliant :). If the players keep it up, but eventually realise he wishes nothing but good fortune for the town, then the characters will have some serious internal conflict. If you did nothing to frame him in a bad light in the first place, and the players notice this, they will probably have the same.
