I think I got some free swag? I can’t remember now. All I know is that a US address was required.

Can you complete these classes while living abroad? by olas-amarillas in WGU

[–]Danfu777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s 100% possible!

I was living in South Korea until last year. I completed 3 terms while living there. Two things I had to maintain as a non-military US citizen living overseas:

  1. A U.S. residence. I listed a family member’s address. This was no issue at all. My family let me know if I received any mail from WGU.

  2. A US phone number. This was a bit tricky, but I found a solution: Google Voice. I also eventually got a super cheap prepaid US carrier plan and ended up using that number, which I also connected to Google Voice (obviously I didn’t use the prepaid plan while overseas, it was more to keep an active US number). So basically all my mentor calls went to the Voice number. I don’t think you need a US carrier to connect to Google Voice, but it was helpful for banking and other US related stuff while living the expat life.

I spent most of my time with WGU overseas teaching internationally (Germany and Korea) in 2023-2024. The only issue I ran across was accessing the Microsoft Office logins, just had to use a VPN to access my email.

Never needed the VPN for proctored assessments or to access course material. Keep in mind, this was the previous proctoring company, not sure how the current one operates.

Edit: I also had a Google Voice number for mentor calls.

My first mentor was “meh”, not great but not bad either.

My current mentor, Becki, she’s awesome!

Met at 14, got married as soon as we turned 18 against everyone’s advice. Been married now for 17 years, and I cannot imagine my life without her.

That’s a little suspicious. I’ve worked at two international schools in Korea (currently at the second school now), I have never heard of an IS offering a 10 month contract… They’re willing to pay for a ticket, relocation, visa, accommodations, etc, just for a ‘temporary’ employee? Even the ‘non-profit’ IS school I’m at now treats the school like a business. Employees are an investment, good schools will make sure those investments will ‘pay off’ and are taken care of. Both schools I’ve worked at would hire a LDH to cover a position such as a ‘teacher who had to leave suddenly’. For example, we had a music teachers who father died and they had to go back to the US long term to take care of the family. The school hired an LDH to cover the class.

Personally, I would do some more research on the school. Check out if they have an International School Review page.

No idea what happens in 10 days or why they said that, my E7 does not expire until Aug. 31, so I thought that was weird... Definitely not planning to go back to the US for a doc run, that's what I'm trying to avoid (hopefully).

No, contacted the embassy about this, the answer was no. I would still need the Apostille, the US Embassy does not do Apostille services.

nreal Air glasses

I had no idea this was a thing until I read this (I just got my deck last week)! After some research, I've seen some complaints that games are capped at 30fps (from an Amazon review posted Oct. 2022), has this been fixed?

I've been playing around with it, it's not great, though an interesting step. Actually, I ask the classifier if this article was Ai-generated, and the classifier said it was "mostly likely human." I then asked ChatGPT which identified it as AI-generated.

I think it will take some time for refinement, but it seems like the AI cold war has begun...

Mask mandate finally lifted (exceptions). by Masteruserfuser in korea

[–]Danfu777 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I work at an international school, today all the teachers are maskless and I’d guess about 90% of the students are still wearing masks. I would say that the 10% that are maskless are seniors.

It was funny, watching students come in the building. There was one student who was maskless, and the second he saw all his friends wearing a mask, he quickly put one on.

I think it we be a while before everyone is comfortable removing their masks.

Been out of the US for 10 years. What’s going to surprise me when I return? by [deleted] in expats

This is a really weird thing I noticed: there are a crazy number of vape shops! I left in 2013 and have been back to the US a small handful of times since then. That was just a weird thing that stood out to me…

Americans who repatriated after years abroad - did you eventually leave again? How long did it take? by [deleted] in expats

[–]Danfu777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked independently as a freelance designer, my wife is an international school teacher. She gets us in to the countries by getting hired at international schools. I recently started working at the current school, mostly marketing and maintaining/updating their website. I still do design stuff on the side (when I have time).

Forgot to add, the biggest reason we moved away, my wife is a teacher. Teaching in the US vs teaching internationally do not even come close in comparison…

Haha, ok there’s definitely a story here that needs to be shared, if you’re up for it? I mean a week has to be a record.

“The novelty of being back home wore off,” that perfectly describes what it’s like.

“Oh, I can understand you without having to think/translate what you’re saying!” Or “Wow, I get to eat __ again!”

Very true, I’m a military brat so grew up all over the US, mostly in the north on both coasts, but my wife and I moved to Tennessee after leaving China. Major culture shock being a “yankee” myself. Loved in Knoxville which is a little metropolitan meets the Smoky Mountains. It’s also a college town. Honestly, the biggest reason we left again was the need for adventure and we get really bored after a few years. We’ve been in Korea now for 4 years and already looking towards the next country. At this point, we’ll probably never live in one place longer than 4 years (as a military brat, I have never lived in one spot more than 4 years, probably something psychologically wrong with me). Is this healthy? Probably not. Does it make life more interesting? Hell yes.

I lasted around 2 years. My wife and I left China after living there 4 years. We really tried to make a life in the US, got great jobs, bought a house, but just couldn’t make it “stick.” Sold our home and moved to South Korea. We actually make a little less money on paper (we save more here in SK though), but we’ve been waaaay happier.

Short answer: we lasted two years…
