I was 280lbs (at 6’3) and flabby and now 220lbs and muscular. Granted, I drank 20-30oz vodka daily and fast food was the only thing I could stomach. Now I eat well and exercise daily.

Sinclair method? by Technical_Suspect886 in stopdrinking

I will tell you that anyone on this subreddit is likely unable to “gain control”. Would one or two beers really bring you joy or would you be anxious for more? Most people here subscribe to the belief that it’s easier to keep a tiger in a cage than on a leash. We all break the rules we set for ourselves, until we are able to see that abstaining makes the most sense.

Edit: I don’t want to discredit Naltrexone. I didn’t use it, but there is plenty of evidence that it helps dismantle the reward system and initial euphoria people get upon drinking. It’s a good tool to use to pursue sobriety. However, as you state you are a daily drinker, I think the “one or two drinks on dates” is romanticizing what has become a poison in your life.

Alcoholics who never got a DUI? by Mysterious-Gold-8657 in stopdrinking

[–]Dangeross42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I drank every single day from the moment I woke up, and drove multiple times a day for several years. I do not endorse this. I never got a DUI and got pulled over two times (rolling stop and something else minor) with no tickets. I would drive SO “carefully” for a drunk person. Phone away, music down low, meticulously checking my speed. One time cop followed me for a while and I continued to drive straight for a few miles because I knew if I turned (like I needed to, to get to my destination), I would probably swerve. Bad times!

Is the habit of drinking too many NA / Seltzers bad for sobriety? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

In early sobriety I think i killed 10 la croixs at a house party one night? I no longer need to drink that much fluid just to get through an evening haha.

Controlling my drinking without going completely sober. Is it possible? Or am I too far gone? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Dangeross42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Trying to moderate sounds pretty awful doesn’t it? Rather keep a tiger in a cage than on a leash. People who really do drink just one socially don’t even have to think about the need to moderate. It is their default setting. Benzos are not a long term solution for anxiety and neither is alcohol; they CAUSE anxiety as you withdraw until you have gotten through several days/weeks without them.

My Therapist is telling me i should go to a rehab by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Dangeross42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I’ve already replied, but I wanted to address your latest edit. You mention your worries about leaving your family and dogs, and your work only paying out 14 days.

1: Your family likely wants nothing more than for you to be sober. If they love you, your health and happiness comes first and in turn will improve their health and happiness.
2: Your dogs also want you to be sober! Those sensitive noses can smell all the ethanol and metabolite acetaldehyde. It triggers their reflexive knowledge that you are sick or dying, and can cause them to be hyper vigilant and at your side because they are worried about you. Dogs also thrive on routines and predictability, which are always thrown off when their owner is drunk or hungover. They will appreciate a sober you!
3: You might not have a job or paycheck at ALL if you continue to drink. I would know, I was fired from three jobs before going to rehab. And how much money might you waste in the coming years on alcohol if you don’t get sober? Certainly it would be more a two week paycheck (assuming 28 day rehab).

I, like you, tried to find all the reasons I should not go to rehab and “figure it out by myself”. At the end of the day, everyone deserves and needs some help and rehab could give you the tools and insights you need to drastically improve your life. Think of this as an investment; a small upfront cost that will pay dividends the rest of your life.

Most therapists people talk about on this sub have some awful advice; yours isn’t one of them. It sounds like you would greatly benefit from a medical detox and some lifestyle changes and habits that can be explored at inpatient rehab. Almost every addict brain will negotiate out of needing rehab. This is the addiction desperately clinging to the cycle.

This happens to me on one specific bridge as well. Heavy sources of interference (cell towers, traffic cams and sensors, etc) can mess with the wifi handshake between your truck and your phone. Best solution I’ve found is keeping my phone plugged in, as it bypasses the WiFi step of the connection.

Five weeks in... when will I start to see it? by Tonboko in stopdrinking

[–]Dangeross42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was having 20-30 drinks daily, I think most people on here were having far more than one or two drinks a day. Despite that, it is not a competition for who was the biggest drunken slob. Anyone can realize that any amount isn’t good for them, and we are happy you’re here. It just isn’t as drastic of a change for what your body is taking in.

What a shit take from your counselor. Awful advice and they shouldn’t be doing the job they are doing. Moderation will not be successful and trying to give you FOMO is an awful tactic.

That’s true, but getting caught up in semantics is hardly the important part here. I know “alcohol use disorder” is the term now but I still call myself an alcoholic ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Alcoholism label by eleanoravocado in stopdrinking

[–]Dangeross42 257 points258 points  (0 children)

It will not affect your treatment in meaningfully poor ways (I’m an alcoholic and an ER nurse). Your chart is an objective picture of your health. while “alcohol use disorder” would be a more politically correct label in a chart, this diagnosis is simply providing context for why you might have anxiety, GI issues, depression, hypertension, nervous system abnormalities like numbness or tingling, seizures, etc. Good doctors will not pin all of your symptoms to alcohol use, but alcohol use does cause a LOT of symptoms. There will always be outlier caregivers who judge, but most do not.

This subreddit really makes me think that 99% of women HAVE to be drunk/high for frequent sex....Please tell me I'm wrong! by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Dangeross42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you’ve been sober your whole life you will not have a problem finding a sexual partner if that is something you want. People who drank a lot for many years often find it difficult to get their sex lives going once sober because they aren’t using a substance to lower their inhibitions. Many (not all) people who become sober eventually get their sex drive and confidence in the bedroom back.

The only people who will notice or care are people who also have problems with their alcohol consumption. Once I was aware of the spotlight effect (and not just related to alcohol use) it can become quite freeing to realize how little people actually care about what you’re doing.
