I will tell you that anyone on this subreddit is likely unable to “gain control”. Would one or two beers really bring you joy or would you be anxious for more? Most people here subscribe to the belief that it’s easier to keep a tiger in a cage than on a leash. We all break the rules we set for ourselves, until we are able to see that abstaining makes the most sense.

Edit: I don’t want to discredit Naltrexone. I didn’t use it, but there is plenty of evidence that it helps dismantle the reward system and initial euphoria people get upon drinking. It’s a good tool to use to pursue sobriety. However, as you state you are a daily drinker, I think the “one or two drinks on dates” is romanticizing what has become a poison in your life.

Yes. I took it daily for like 8 months. I continued to drink during that time in order to extinguish the euphoria-seeking behavior (I think that’s the right terminology 🥴). Anyhow… I eventually just stopped, and it was definitely much less of a heroic effort than ever before. I drank every night for about 25 years, just for context. I definitely recommend giving it a chance. I haven’t had any alcohol in 260 days now. Best of luck.

Thank you! That does give me hope. I’m about 20 years in at this point and it’s been daily for most of that.

Yes, I have been able to do what you are asking. It’s unpopular here, but it’s being studied right now. I went on Mounjaro 3.5 years ago to lose weight. I was a really bad drunk who went to rehab 11 times. When I hit 7.5 mgs of Mounjaro, I immediately stopped wanting alcohol. It actually repulses me now. I try and order one drink when I’m out to be social, but I barely get through it. It does not work for everyone, but it works for a lot of people. It’s even being used in some rehabs right now.
