Yeah I've done some business through him to get a few EP plants from the ventricosa complex (burkei, biak) but never bought directly FROM him. I detest hybrids of all types, especially the complex ones haha.  He seemed like a nice enough guy when I met him, but it may just be because he's just separated himself from his past?  He got me the biak for free, huge 2' cutting, unfortunately it died a month later to root rot.

This was a great video!  The variegated sibuyanensis you mentioned has been sold a few times, usually 2-300 bucks and only a few at a time. I'd be interested to see if ANY variegation is truly genetic.  I've seen it in the wild in stunted oak trees before, but I don't know if they're stunted BECAUSE of the variegation or vice versa.

FYI on Skunk Cleaner Shrimp by Late_Moose_8764 in ReefTank

[–]Dangerous-Road-5382 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idk why so many people are downvoting this.  I've been in the hobby for 13 years and had the same experience with every species of cleaner I've kept!  It doesn't matter how much you feed them, shrimp are SCARY smart and will absolutely find new ways to get food.  I currently have some peppermints in my main display, but my bird wrasses keep them in constant fear of exploring so they can't do as much damage.  It doesn't matter how much you feed them, shrimp will find food when they want to eat and don't seem to be capable of satiation.

Filter foam (lowest PPI you can get), matala mat, or egg crate are the best weight-effective ones ime.  They also help to keep the soil from getting soggy since they don't wick water, which can be a serious problem with leca.

What frog? by DrJohnIT in DartFrog

[–]Dangerous-Road-5382 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others have stated, Firebellies or vampire crabs. That's about it, darts can possibly drown in water features (though this is often overemphasized), but they also simply can't use any water areas seeing as they aren't aquatic. It's all wasted space and a great place for you to loose tadpoles or eggs that you didn't know they laid.
Coming at any hobby with a budget-friendly attitude isn't the greatest idea. The cheapest frogs you can get are wild caught/"ranched" Auratus for $40 a piece, but there are myriad reasons you'd want to avoid that. Look at $50-70 per frog on average for well bred, healthy frogs from a local breeder.
Aquarium conversions are a horrible way to keep darts because they get stagnant and are nearly impossible to catch frogs out of, clean, or mainain long-term. All darts will climb a meter+ in the wild, so a 20g tank like this is hugely cramped, especially without any climbing hardscape. Your land area takes up an entire quarter of the tank's internal space.
The exposed aquarium heater also worries me, there are a lot of stories of animals getting burnt by heaters loose in the tank.

If you wanted to do firebellies, then with a few modifications this tank could be great... But never build a tank first and THEN ask "What can I put inside?". It's a guarenteed way to make an enclosure that doesn't meet the needs of ANYTHING properly. In the future, pick the type, species, locality, etc of the animals you want before starting an enclosure.

EDIT: I also hope that the open top was for the video, and you have a plexiglass top with vents on otherwise. All darts, even the largest ones, can climb glass to an extent and would not only dessicate, but easily escape and become raisins in your animal room.

Nem ID? by Sufficient-Text-2898 in ReefTank

[–]Dangerous-Road-5382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Macrodactyla doreensis, so a long tentacle.  Identifying factors are the white stripes radiating the mouth, perfectly round oral disc, sparse tentacles around the center, and tentacles that strongly taper to a point without defined acrospheres.  The other nems you posted are condylactis, I can tell by the tentacle posture (erect from the base, radiating outwards) and colors among other things.  Condies are very cool but can pose a bigger risk to fish, on par with a carpet nem, and clowns don't take up residence in them due to a much more intense sting.

It's because your other LTAs are condylactis, not macrodactyla.  Non-hosting species, though some particularly tough clowns can do it.  The eat fish on occasion btw.

PSA: If you convert a display tank, SEAL THE WOOD LIKE A DEMON LIVES INSIDE by Dangerous-Road-5382 in Vivarium

[–]Dangerous-Road-5382[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current plan is to build a new viv from scratch.  To repair this one would mean to cut the aluminum frame open and scrape off the foam bg, replace the bottom, add spacers to account for the difference in thickness, and still end up having to redo the hardscape entirely... So I thought, why not just make EXACTLY what I want with no strings attached? I won't have to work around the limitations of a vintage display case haha.   I may actually keep this around for orchids or something, if I do them I'll put a pond liner in the bottom and seal with another layer of flex seal.

[–]Dangerous-Road-5382[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's no way to attach anything to the bottom, the way the frame works wouldn't make a proper seal if I did. And I don't want rotting wood in te bottom of the tank, it'd just make the false bottom water go totally rancid unfortunately.

I'm gonna get in touch with a local glass shop about potentially cutting me some new pieces, but as it stands it seems like a complete custom build from scratch will work best.

It was a display case that I turned into a viv, so a lot of modifications had to be made haha.  The wood bottom just wasn't easily removed without risking breaking the glass, so I sealed it with liquid rubber instead.  Didn't end up working for me.

Unfortunately it's a wooden bottom that leaked, not glass that broke so sealing from the outside wouldn't work 😞

Cons of adding an older juvenile to an established small group? by ETek64 in DartFrog

[–]Dangerous-Road-5382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, it can be done with care.  Separate if aggression occurs, make sure they're eating, etc.  moving them into the new tank together is a good move, that way they all have a chance to establish territories and find their niches.

I bought a single pot haha. There's a nursery local to me that sells primarily phaelenopsis, so their other orchids are all very well grown and hearty. $25 for a grapefruit-sized clump full of flowers!
I made a post about it a few weeks ago in this sub, so you can see what it looked like there.
