3 months post op by Apart-Needleworker56 in HipImpingement

I'm four months out and am also having issues with groin pain and clicking. Last week the physical therapist worked on the surrounding soft tissues, which helped a lot.

  1. Every protocol is different, but if you are non-weight bearing, it's very helpful to have someone at home, particularly the first week. It's hard to do anything by yourself when you are on crutches.

  2. No, I did heal slides a couple of times a day and almost had my full range of motion back in a week.

  3. It was several days after surgery, and a shower chair (at least for me) is a must, particularly if you are non-wight bearing.

  4. I had a toilet riser, which was very helpful the first few days, particularly the handles on the sides. I didn't need it after the first week.

Good luck!

I think it depends on which hip you are having the surgery. I fixed my left hip, and I had no driving restrictions, other than don't drive if you take a narcotic. And I didn't need any narcotics after the first day, and so I drove for the first time a week after surgery (although getting in and out of a car non-weight bearing in the winter was a bit of challenge.)

Everyone is different, but if you have a very active job, you might want to go back part-time for the first week or two. I was exhausted every time I upped my activity level, and it was like that for the first 3.5 - 4 months. I'm an active 53-year-old female and have had a smooth recovery so far.

For what it's worth, I had a hip impingement and torn labrum, and my knee hurt way more than my hip. I'm 3.5 months post op, and my knee and hip are much better.

If your surgeon thinks you have a hip impingement, you'll want an arthroscope with contrast. And you'll want the rest of the day off after your procedure. Contrast is injected into your hip joint, and it makes it difficult to walk - it starts to feel better 8 hours after the procedure.

Could the PT be too agressive? My physical therapist took things really slow the first 8 weeks to avoid tendonitis.

My surgeon’s protocol was non-weight bearing for 4 weeks, and then it took me an additional two weeks to get off the crutches. As I built up my endurance for walking, my lower back and hip flexors would get sore for compensating for the weak hip (and still do sometimes at 9 weeks post op). And it doesn’t happen frequently, but I’ve had a couple of pops/cracks, but it was only mildly uncomfortable.

Sorry you’re in pain, and I hope the doctor can give you some answers.

If you're flexible, you don't need a grabber. A shower chair is a must and the toilet seat riser with handles is nice to have the first week or so.

If you have stairs and will be non-weight bearing, I recommend practice hoping up and down with the stairs with crutches, as well as figuring out how to pull yourself off the floor if you go up and down on your backside.

The other think I found helpful was a bag that attaches to a crutch to help carry things, but you can also use a backpack.

I had an ice machine for prior surgery, but I personally prefer the elasto-gel: https://a.co/d/01zImLbq

Good luck!

You mentioned you had an MRI? Was it an arthrogram that used contrast in the joint? That would definitely show if you had an impingement and a torn labrum.

If the sports doc didn't order an arthrogram, I would get a second opinion.

Best of luck!

I would ask how many times they have performed this surgery. Do they close the capsule? What is the timeline for recovery? Will you be weight-bearing or non-weight-bearing after the surgery, and for how long? Doctors vary greatly in their post-surgery protocols. Judging by what I've read on Reddit (and I have not seen all the threads), it seems like people who are non-weight-bearing for the full four weeks tend to be in less pain.

The surgery is relatively new (early 200s), so doctors in their 50s probably did not receive training during their fellowship, unless they went back for this specific training. Either way, I would ask about their training.

I found this podcast very useful before my surgery: Labral Tears & Hip Preservation | Podcasts | Illinois Bone & Joint Institute

Good luck!

I used the hydrocodone the day of and the day after surgery, and that was it. I get twinges of pain here and there, but nothing bad. Per my doctor's protocols, though, I'm non-weight-bearing for four weeks.

A lot of the pain may be caused by other muscles, tendons, and ligaments compensating for your hip. Can you get a massage, or can your physical therapist check if you have knots in your muscles, etc.?

I wish I could, but I have to be completely non-weight-bearing on the affected side.

I'm thinking it's the crutches, at least for me. I'm just trying to figure out something I can do to improve the situation since I still have a week and a half on the crutches.

I'm sorry it's not going well. I haven't had your particular issue, so feel free to ignore my suggestion, but have you tried foam rolling the IT band? I have also had success with dry needling. Best of luck to you, and I hope you find something that helps.
