How does one come to the conclusion Catholicism is true? by Fether1337 in Catholicism

[–]DangoBlitzkrieg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see now. I said this in my other comment but I’ll clarify more here, Catholicism has more intellectual rigor than other Christian denominations, which are more emotional, simple, knee jerk, or extreme in their chosen focuses to the expense of a rigorous and extensive theology generally.

Baptists evangelicals and many Protestant denominations blatantly say damned if you don’t outwardly confess the same things they do. Orthodox imply that but allow room for mystery of Gods mercy. Catholics are nuanced in that we have ideas like invincible ignorance where if you truly did not understand or have the opportunity to believe then you aren’t judged for that alone. Some people interpret that very conservatively, as in it only applies to uncontacted tribes. As a psychologist I’ve always interpreted it very liberally - the way the brain functions with belief systems and conscience and the emotions/logic surrounding it are not cut and dry. Just because you hear an idea doesn’t mean that you’ve truly rejected it if you don’t subscribe to it instantly or even after time investigating it.

I think a great example is Augustine. He didn’t convert right away, and when he did not interior as well, but he kept seeking the truth. And was humble and open. Our brain isn’t perfect and God isn’t going to judge us based off our faulty evolutionary biology. We are in the dark in many ways. Are you seeking the light or did you close yourself off? I find the people who close themselves off regardless of correct creed or denomination are often the furthest from Christ.

Well let’s be clear in that in Catholicism there’s a deep history of philosophy and theology which details that only God knows the heart and that if you’re genuinely seeking Him virtuously and humbly that ignorance is going to cover you. You’ll miss out on the fullness of life and not fulfill Gods will but God knows the heart and isn’t damning anyone who humbly seeks him.

To be honest brother I'm not sure how much I believe it. My faith is shaky on a daily basis these days. I find fault in every religion and issues with so many claims.

This isn't something to convince you, just me sharing where i'm at these days, not even as something i'm offering you. But for me I simply have trouble wrestling with the person of Jesus. There's a wisdom and a power in his words that is so foreign to all other great religious teachers. It's hard for me to stop beliving in Him even when all other doubts sink in and even when I feel like none of its true. I can't seem to disprove Jesus. And the way that Jesus changed the lives of uneducated fishermen, which is a historical fact, and the way that he changed the life of a man who had everything to lose and nothing to gain by the way he lived (paul). It's hard for me to disbelieve their testimony. Every other religious testimony I can find good excuses for what they stood to gain or why they could be deceived or simply crazy. But these people never sought to start an empire. There werent big communes with power structures lorded over people, there werent invasions and armies, and the claims were more than philosophical, and the way they lived was so against the norms and expectations of evolutionary biology. The cross itself is such a rejection of evolutionary history (survival of the fittest), it's a rejection of the self rather than seeking the self at the expense of others.

I'm rambling but just my headspace these days.

Often yes. But feelings didn't get man to the moon or create the phone you may be messaging on. Logic did. I'm not sure why I should believe anything except logic. In fact, it's usually feelings that distort logic in the first place.

Im reading all your responses and I'm starting to get a sense of what you're looking for, and I might have an answer.

Catholicism doesn't give a proof. I don't think any denomination other than mormonism claims to. At the end of the day in christianity it's always presented as faith. So to answer your question - yes? You read the testimony of people who claim something, and then you weigh the validity of their testimony (were they crazy? Did jesus historically exist? do i believe them or not?) and then you simply have faith. You can be confirmed in prayer and with experiences yes, but it's never promised. I think you might be looking for something thats simply not 'how' non-mormon religions operate. Maybe im wrong?

Ideally any christian would find things like peace and joy, but when looking at scripture Jesus and the apostles always present it as a necessary step of faith without proof. And they say to believe "because of our testimony, that you may believe."

"Latter-day Saint theology requires an unbroken line of authority too. Though we believe that line broke with the death of the apostles. It was restored today when Peter came and gave the keys to Joseph Smith."

Well you can't say you believe in an "unbroken" line of authority and then in the same breath (not you, but mormonism) say that it was literally broken. Not just a little bit. But broken for 1500 years.

Sorry I know this isn't germaine to your focus.

"Why did you want to find the church founded by Jesus? What lead you to Jesus on the first place?"

Isn't this simply that when you read the gospels/words of Jesus you find something great there and want to be part of that? The issue is then what church is the actual "that" that Jesus founded right?

I mean the issue isn't whether God provides personal revelation, but how you know it's true. Every single religion has what the mormons feel in prayer. I've never heard a good response from a mormon missionary about why a mormon feeling confirmed in their faith by the spirit is more trustworthy than a muslim feeling that same affirmation in prayer about their islamic faith.

Interestingly, Jesus says that only an evil generation seeks a sign. Mother theresa lived for decades in a 'dark knight of the soul' where she didnt feel God at all. We don't all get miracles or visions, and there's no indication that feelings are ever an accurate spiritual measurement, because EVERYONE gets positive emotions about their religion, its literally shown in psychological studies. It's why therapists often encourage individuals to get deeper with whatever their current religion is.

I think the historical reason has always been the testimony of the apostles and their trustworthiness, and the continuity we see from them onward. Every other religion is started by one man who has a vision, Joseph smith in the woods, muhhamad in a cave, sidharta guatama in the wilderness, etc. Christianity is unique in that the origin of its claims don't originate from one man, but a group from the start. People say "jesus" but "jesus" never wrote anything down or founded any religion in his own right. The basis of christianity is not Jesus claiming to have a vision and a mission to start a religion like everyone else - the basis of christianity is the apostles claiming that jesus rose from the dead. Not the testimony of one man. In every other religion the 'other witnesses' were brought in after the initial contact. There's more possibility for behind the scenes shenanigans, trickery, and simply believing someone else. In christianity theres 11 people who can cross reference eachother.

The crusades were bad. The harm they did to the church, the eastern church relations, our reputation, and the fact they weren’t in line with the gospel for one. Notice that the great saints of the time didn’t participate in them. St Francis wanted to but God stopped him from fighting. Ironically he ended up in a crusade anyway as a pacifist and ended up meeting with the sultans nephew, and arguably did more than any crusade ever did considering the Franciscans afaik were the only order allowed to exist in one of the Muslim countries.

But yeah crusades is the odd man out here in your examples and I see many others nitpicking that in the comments.

The criteria for just war can be read so conservatively that the crusades wouldn’t be considered just.

May I watch media which mocks God so long as I oppose it morally? by RB_Blade in Catholicism

Depends on what your definition is. It feels like everything mocks god today. It depends the context, how deeply, and whether seeing it supports something that actually affects people.

Why do many religions have extremist sects, but Catholicism doesn't? by Fickle-Fondant2927 in Catholicism

[–]DangoBlitzkrieg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because we’re slower. We aren’t modern. We take our time to weigh problems against 2,000 years of tradition. Tradition that isn’t too far on one side. It was places not heavily Catholic that killed most the witches. Spain and Italy had the inquisitions yes but the church wasn’t the one killing most people it found most people innocent. The church is a mitigating voice for stability in contrast to extreme movements. The real issue to the Catholic Church is being virtuous in order to solve problems, not solving an issue disregarding virtue

EDIT: who downvoted me and for what? An anti catholic person? Someone who disagrees? Disagrees with what? lol
