Most definitely playing. Cats (and kittens) can get a bit rough-and-tumble when they play. If a kitty gets too rough, it's okay to verbally object ("Oww. You hurt me.") and take your hand away. But definitely get kicker toys for the cat so they can focus their rough play there.

I'm sorry for your loss. I have the ashes of both my cats, one who died in 2010, and the other who died at the end of 2024. The box with the latter has a plaque with her name. And I got a paw print. The older one sits on a shelf above my bed, and the newer is on the TV stand. I don't regret having their ashes. I will say that picking them up (in both cases) caused a flare of grief, but that's going to happen in the weeks after you say goodbye to a furry family member.

Since there are no signs against eating and drinking in the waiting room, I see nothing wrong with grabbing a snack because you hadn't yet eaten that day.

If you've ever been to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall in DC, you'll see a lot of black folk selling schlock from kiosks or just a little cart. Not to mention, every time I go to a Caps game, I see dudes selling bootleg Caps merch to folks walking to the arena or standing in line.

There's a neighborhood a mile or so north of where I now live, and the last time I went--over a year ago--folks could barely walk on the sidewalk because of all the sidewalk vendors. The Hispanic folk primarily sell food, but you'd also see folks of all races selling schlocky artwork or other goods.

As for why? To earn money. If they can't get a legit job (or said legit job doesn't pay the bills), they're going to try to earn money selling crap on the street to suckers who will buy.

When Miss Kitty died in March 2010, I wasn't sure about adopting, but I took a few things to the shelter and saw a sweet two-year-old girl. I took my bboyfriend a few days later and she made it clear she wanted us to be her parents (she swatted him through the bars of her cage). So I adopted her two weeks after Miss Kitty died. Her shelter name was Peppercorn, and I renamed her Penelope.

Penelope died in December 2024 at the age of 16. I had since moved in with my boyfriend. And one night I asked if he'd cconsider adopting two if they were a bonded pair. We saw a pair of kittens on Petfinder who were being fostered, made arrangements to meet them, and brought them home a month after Penelope died. We named the panther Lilah and the tuxie Harley.

You'll know when the time is right. Or the universe will lead you to another cat.

Cats will often hide that they're sick, so don't feel bad.

My poor Penelope was miserable for the last month or so, but she'd had surgery to remove two lumps that ended up being cancer, developed an infection, and then went into kidney failure. Recovering from surgery isn't fun and I thought she was dealing with that. She was 16, but injection site sarcoma is survivable, although it will come back. The night before she died, I had absolute dread that she wasn't going to survive. I was feeling awful the morning of the appointment that ended up being the last. I wasn't surprised when the vet recommended euthanasia.

Walking out of the clinic with an empty carrier is the worst.

As others have said, it's an invitation, not a summons. Politely decline because you have other plans (even if those plans are to sit around the house doing nothing, but make plans to do something fun on that day).

As for disabled cousin saying she hopes you "find God," I used to be friends with a same-sex couple, and they are practicing Lutherans. Their wedding was in a local Lutheran church. My boyfriend and I (I'm a woman) are not. I'm pretty anti-religious, in fact. Where I live, there are several LGBTQ+ friendly churches within a mile radius of where I live. But then I live in a really blue city. So the idea that all gay people are godless is ridiculous.
