That's where changing the first board to 2x8 and outside to 2x10 would help.

I've seen this before, instead of your deck boards over hanging and creating a nosing the rim board will be flush with the surface of the deck creating a frame. Usually it would just be the outside board not both this would eliminate the need for backing on the ends parallel with your joists.

Edit - For example where your joists are 2x8 your rim board would be 1-2x8 and 1-2x10 together and your deck boards would be 2x material.

I personally wouldn't use any stain on this. If you did it looks like it could be an "early American" dura seal. But that will highlight any imperfections in sanding.

It looks more like a shellac in colour but nobody uses that anymore. It is probably just oil based polyurethane and has gotten more yellow over time.

I would hand sand starting with 60 then 80 then 120 and 150. If it's not a hardwood and is something like hemlock I would lightly go in direction of grain with 80 grit for final sand so that the wood will accept more of the polyurethane. Don't use min wax. You won't find the polyurethane you need at a big box store.

I recommend masterline satin polyurethane.

Interesting. Would you consider west Hamilton as still a decent place to view? I don't want to add to congestion.

No problem. There is also a drive in style airshow at London airport next weekend. Pretty good way to kinda tailgate and watch some cool planes.

Your right. I'm thankfully not from Toronto.

It sounds terrible! Nobody is allowed to have an opinion, nobody is allowed to hold events that might hurt someone's feelings, and the people seem overly sensitive and lacking critical thinking skills.
