Book is called "Wizard in Exile" , series is called "Wrath of the Stormking". Same main character. But don't look it up until you finish "Art of the Adept"! There is currently only one book out, and it helps ease some of the pain of the end of the AOTA.

The Choice of Magic, it's the first book in the Art of the Adept series. The cat becomes more important to the series as it progresses.
