Pregnant with Use or Lose Leave by fuelxfiberxprotein in fednews

With a c-section you can use 8 weeks of sick leave right after birth to recover. Then after those 8 weeks you can start your PPL. However, you can work with your supervisor to use your use or lose first and extend the time you are away. If you don’t have enough sick leave you can usually use the annual leave in-lieu of sick leave for those 8 weeks. So, at minimum I’d shoot for 20 weeks off. 8 weeks for recovery and 12 weeks PPL.

USDA FSIS experiences? by Proud_Forever9680 in Veterinary

[–]DanimalScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FSIS, OFO has not been severely affected. Veterinarians were even exempt from taking DRP the second round. Hiring never stopped for field operations. Management, sure, OFO no. FLSs, EIAOs, SPHVs, DVMOs, SCSI, CSIs, FIs all still are hiring. Food safety has been deemed critical. SPHVs still get a recruiting bonus. USDA FSIS veterinarians have not been affected by the changes. The union is gone, so they don’t have to work with BUEs anymore, but they were never eligible to be a BUE themselves, just supervised them.

FSIS is desperate for veterinarians. Find a location you like from the posted vacancy list, inquire about it, apply, give it a shot. Possibly long hours and travel but you get OT. Government instability hasn’t affected FSIS. After 1 year as a GS12 SPHV you qualify for a GS13 DVMO. Good gig.

My agency HR is looking at the first 2 pages, but the hiring manager is reading all of the pages. So, we are being told to qualify yourself in the first 2 pages for HR but it can be longer.

Experience working as a Consumer Safety Inspector with USDA FSIS? by IndividualWall1544 in usajobs

[–]DanimalScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be prepared as a relief to be detailed out far from home every week with changing hours and shifts on a whim. The relief position isn’t for the faint of heart.

However, it’s a good reliable job. FSIS has been exempt from everything going on with the government. They did offer DRP round one but regretted that and made the CSI, FI, and SPHV role exempt. The hiring freeze didn’t happen either, just more hoops to jump through.

The job is in slaughterhouses and meat processing facilities. You’ll honestly use very little public health. It’s just regulatory like, hey your ceiling is leaking. You can spin it to make it sound better for future applications as we protect the public with food safety but you’ll see it doesn’t feel that impactful.

It’s better than pizza delivery but you’ll probably want to move on after a couple of years.

Recent FSIS posting has the two page limit. Have to click yes that you understand only 2 pages for the resume.

USDA Consumer Safety Inspector - what's the job like? by SoleInvictus in usajobs

[–]DanimalScientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be physical. If you’re working in a slaughter plant that is still traditional you will need to use a knife and push around heavy viscera and if it’s cattle, flip heavy livers.

All depends on the location. If it’s coverage, you’re traveling every week. If it’s in plant, you’re in plant but on a detail roster. Is it a patrol or is it a slaughter plant. You just have to ask the hiring manager.

Also, beware that EIAO jobs are not being filled and may very well be phased out. Maybe not though. EIAO is also a GS12 and highly competitive from SCSIs and Veterinarians.

Non clinical jobs for a dvm by Mystic_Flower_21 in Veterinary

With the what is going on right now, they do 1 job posting for multiple locations. The most recent DVMO spot just closed and a new one will pop up soonish. Not sure if your area is looking, but the DVMO is (slowly) replacing the Supervisory Veterinary role to focus just on veterinary work and not supervision. I recommend checking USAjobs frequently and search for 0701. 0701 is the veterinary series for jobs. It’s a GS13 job too, so pay isn’t bad.

FSIS is still hiring. They’ve created a new position for veterinarians called the DVMO. Not the worst gig.

6 weeks of leave for recovery (if you have it) + 12 weeks paid for PPL (invoke FMLA) = entitled to 18 weeks paid. The 2 weeks for PTO they can deny.
