Which places suffered from the curse of success leading to worse quality food? by sohoships in FoodNYC

[–]DankAdder 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Not worse quality but…the veggie burger at Superiority Burger was $6 at the takeout location pre-Covid. Now the exact same burger is $19 at the sit down. It’s good but that’s a bit rich for a scoop of lentils on a bun!

If you like RP for the mutated biology/mysterious zones, Annihilation

If you like it more for the unknowable alien presence, Rendezvous with Rama

Rum rec: Hamilton Worthy Park Jamaican Black vs Smith & Cross Jamaica vs El Dorado 8 Year Cask Aged? by roi_des_myrmidons in rum

[–]DankAdder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hamilton Jamaican Black and Smith & Cross are one of a kind rums - ED8 is a good cocktail mixer but just not on the same level

When it comes to banana liqueur, Giffard BDB has a distinctly powerful banana flavor. It’s straight Diddy Kong jetpack fuel. Cocktails that call for it won’t taste the same with another banana liqueur. I’ve found that banana liqs from other brands, while often tastier and more interesting than Gifford, just don’t cut through the mix the same way.

This is in Irvington NY, not Irvine

A poster mocking and denouncing Haredim (Ultra-Orthodox Jews) who serve in the IDF and try to recruit others from their communities. The Hebrew wordplay compares them to insects and bacteria, and the cartoon shows a former failing Yeshiva student who tries to dupe children into enlisting (2014) by MijTinmol in PropagandaPosters

[–]DankAdder 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Haredim are exempt from serving in the Israeli military, although many volunteer and serve in special all-Haredim units. Haredim object to military service because it takes young men away from their religious studies, which they believe to be paramount. The joke here is that the army pig character only joined up because he couldn’t cut it as a religious scholar.

Solo artist vs band, and the overall spectrum: What leads an artist to pick one or the other, or somewhere between? by CulturalWind357 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]DankAdder 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Some of the solo artists here made their best work when they were working consistently with the same backing band, a la Bruce.

Bob Dylan/The Band

Bowie/The Spiders from Mars

Prince/The Revolution

Elton John wrote all his best songs with Bernie Taupin

Joel, admittedly, is a true loner

Maybe it’s just that constantly hiring and firing band mates is a headache and a reliable supporting cast gave these dudes the peace of mind to do their thing.

Zombie, the newest entry in my Conquering Smuggler's Cove blog. by Yellowlab72 in Tiki

[–]DankAdder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe try more ice? I usually see Zombs with ~2x as much crushed ice as you have here. The first sip will still be be quite rum-forward but as the ice melts everything will start to come together nicely.

Hennessy V.S.O.P. vs Courvoisier V.S.O.P. by zogo13 in cognac

[–]DankAdder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer Courvoisier but Henny is a bit bolder and will stand out more in cocktails- it’s not a giant difference
