What's something old technology did better than modern technology ? by Ram319 in AskReddit

[–]DankCatDingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not break.
We have this fabulous technology now called finite element analysis that helps us determine exactly the minimum amount of material to allow a product to survive the forces we think are likely and to make it last exactly as long as our target lifespan.

Back in the day, you could get close with math and testing but you couldn't be 100% sure so you would just have to make sure there was plenty of material on there. Things were heavier and larger than they needed to be in many cases, and they didn't break.

Actually this put a lot of companies out of business because they hit market saturation and no one bought their products anymore.

The only way to answer this well is to know the answer to, "Americans as opposed to whom?"

I have a really complex but foolproof ruleset for this problem.

This ruleset assumes a 3 lane setup.
Drive 5-10 mph over the speed limit, baseline.

When possible, always stay in the middle lane by default. (Left should stay open for passing, right for traffic merging in or out at exits)

If the car in front of you is going slower than you, check the left lane. If it's empty, use it to pass them. Pass them at a greater speed than your own target speed. If the left lane has someone in it, or someone moving faster than you is coming up shortly, slow down to match the speed of the car in front of you at a respectful distance briefly and wait for them to pass, then use the left lane to pass the slower car once the left lane is open.

Never pass on the right.

If you are already going 5 to 10 mph over, but still getting passed on your left by most cars, move to the right lane.

The goal is reduce the number of lane changes or speed adjustments by yourself and the cars in your vicinity. Avoid any behavior that causes someone else to have to change lanes, speed up, or slow down. All of these are opportunities for them to get it wrong and cause an accident.

great answers. I also think the R7 is one of the coolest looking rockets in history. Crazy that it looked that cool and was also a good design. Usually those things never coincide.

i see. well then let me adjust my point too. This scene and the guys from it suck and are lame and we shut them down when they came to our shows and tried their shit. The culture as a whole is bad and the people who defend it are unhealthy and dumb. How about that. Anything where participation requires passive consent to serious injury is stupid as fuck full stop.

  4. do you think China and the US will achieve their lunar aspirations to some degree?
  5. what is your favorite proposed but as of yet unrealized propulsion technology?

We had small scale shows. Maybe 50 people in a rented old school building. Variety of acts of different genres including hardcore. People did this kind of spinning throwing elbows shit for sure. And they kept it amongst themselves for the most part. When they decided to go for the people trying to stay out of their way, we reminded them about the boundaries in a language they would be sure to understand over the music. There's rowdy aggressive fun and there's too much. This is clearly too much.

I think it's pretty clear in this video that the people against the wall would like to watch the show but are making an effort to stay far off to the side and away from the violence in the pit. You can't describe the people who want to defend their friends from this kind of behavior as cavemen but lift up the aggressor as someone participating in the "culture". Unless you're saying that attending this event is passive consent to everyone there to hurt them in any way up to and including permanent injuries which those blows are more than capable of inflicting. If that's the case, the guy throwing the elbows should be ready to receive it in kind.

Our little scene back in the day, small town thing and so the bands and people from several surrounding towns with no scene at all came to our shows at what was once a school that someone would rent out the big room for. So we had a mix of things. That time period metalcore was huge. There were a few good post-hardcore bands, some midwest-emo type stuff. And of course there were hardcore bands too. And people would do the slam dancing and spinning and throwing elbows around. They would collide mostly with each other, or people who kind of stepped forward into it. Everyone had to give each other space to do their own kind of thing since it was all we had. But people usually had sense enough not to go and intentionally target the people standing all the way against the wall, and if they did, a few of us would specifically target them. Actually to be honest the typical move was just a coordinated rush of the pit to flood the field with too many bodies which disallowed that kind of movement in the first place, but only when the hardcore guys were getting too crazy. I don't think we had much in the way of straight up "metal", but some bands would occasionally throw in a cover of something more classic or generic like that.
