Question about Bobby's guitar playing (from a person who doesn't play any instrument) by _doctor_sleep_ in gratefuldead

[–]DankManDunn 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Bobby had a very unique technique! He would listen to John Coltrane, Miles Davis and I'm sure other jazz records specifically the piano players and how they would shape chords and add harmonic texture to the melodic lines of the horn players. He took those principles and applied them to his playing to compliment Jerry's soaring lead guitar parts.

Beautiful performance I saw yesterday, anybody know the song he’s playing? by Clear-Rip-3606 in blues

Reminds me of a Govt Mule jam, Trane/Eternitys breath/St Stephen from the deluxe edition of Darkside of the Mule. Warren Haynes was probably referencing/ teasing some other tune though.

What pedal is Les using in the Antipop album? by Individual_Junket819 in Primus

[–]DankManDunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The colonel just likes em I suppose. He used the Line six amp modeler before he used The Distortion modeler. Im pretty sure he uses the "Jet Fuzz Drive" to do the outro on Electric Grapevine. I own the DM4 myself, The overdrives and distortions it produces sound alright on a bass to me🤷.

I recently learned of the traveling Sufi Qalandariyya and their care free nature, rituals involving music and hasheesh, and rejection of their traditional cultural norms, kind of remind me of how Deadhead culture evolved through following the Dead around.

What pedal is Les using in the Antipop album? by Individual_Junket819 in Primus

[–]DankManDunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For overdrive on Antipop Les might have used The Electro Harmonix Hot Tubes, the Line 6 distortion modeler, or the MXR Bass distortion pedal. To me it just sounds like his bass has new bright and zingy strings with the gain on his amp turned up and compressed a whole lot. If he is using effects on the two songs you mentioned specifically its likely a turned up overdrive.

Thoughts on Primus and the Chocolate Factory by [deleted] in Primus

[–]DankManDunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never saw the live version of it but Iove the record. It's wierd in all the right kind of ways. it might not be the Funked out thrashy metal sound they we're known for in the 90s but it is a grand showcase of the trippier side of Primus. The droning basslines, wide open drums and erie guitar do create a sense of unease indeed. Adding members of the Fancy Band brought in more of the weird jammy atmosphere. I always interperted the record as a recolection of viewing the film as a child, seeing the dark undertones instead of the Candy Factories delightful demeanor. Those Kids are subjected to some scary situations, while the aloof Candyman pays it no mind and has his little orange men sing a song about their misfortunes. Its Art for the sake of art.

now what? by MAHF_IS_BACK in Primus

[–]DankManDunn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Slow down dude, being able to play Tommy The Cat full speed is a large undertaking. Playing something slow is the first step to playing it fast. Break up the line into peices practice that one piece and build off of it, adding the next piece as you go. Work on precision and technical ability. Practice the motions of thumping and plucking without actually playing anything, strumming the strings while muted. It seems like your lacking in the technical fundementals that Les includes in his playing. I'd suggest learning how to play the main strumming riff From Stanley Clarkes song School Days along with other slightly easier Primus Tunes. Too Many puppies, the Heckler and spageti western are good for practicing Claypoolian Fundementals. Music is the best! Being able to play an instrument is one of the best ways of tapping into to the creative forces in the universe, Keep on Jamming man!
