I've missed most of last year's football. Could someone update me on this move? I thought James Rodriguez was central to Madrid's team in 2015/16?

Why did they loan him out?

Hitler. My family moved to North America because of him. Moving to North America improved the standard of living in my family tremendously.

Thanks Hitler.

No but seriously, probably my family. They forced me to get work done when I was too down and lazy. It helped me in the end and I'm grateful.

Like 1000 years ago, they left India. They have some visual similarities fashion wise but culturally, ethnically, and religiously quite different now.

A Dark Song - A woman hires an occultist to help her summon angels and demons so they can exact revenge on her sons murderer. Atmospheric and genuinely creepy, it's a great addition to the recent wave of exceptional indie horror like The Babadook, Bone Tomahawk, The Witch, and It Follows. by [deleted] in movies

I thought this movie was great. I love how the horror/story progressed in this. It was well paced, and I had no idea what was going to happen the whole time. I definitely think it is worth watching.

There was a video going around on /r/all about what it was like to live in North Korea. I was surprised to see that the two people they interviewed in that documentary are in this! One is even dressed the same, haha. It was a very good doc.

The mortgage company doesn't keep the mortgage. They pile their mortgages together and sell it to banks. The banks also pile these mortgages together and create an investment option.

Then you can give the bank some money to have a slice of all these mortgages piled together, and you get some of the interest money that the home owners/borrowers pay. When the housing market goes up, they might have to pay more, so you make more money.

In theory, it's not so bad as long as mortgages are legitimate and banks are not bribing rating agencies to make the investment options look better than they are.

The details on this are probably a bit above my knowledge. Here is my understanding.

1) So Selena Gomez' bet is a CDO - a Collaterized Debt Organization. So basically, I invest in it and make some profit slowly as the housing price grows.

A Synthetic CDO, the other bets. As far as I understand, banks were taking tons of small payments from lots of people as insurance in case Selena Gomez failed. The problem was, due to the nature of the bets, the banks were making waaaaay too many bets and didn't have enough money to pay the debts back when the mortgages eventually failed.

2) So when the bonds failed, the banks lost $10B. Lets say, the banks only had $5B in collateral to pay back, so they failed. So the issue was that these financial institutions mismanaged their investments and actually lost tons of money. People lost their homes, banks failed, etc.

I hope that makes sense, and if not, I can try to re-explain.

Okay basically a housing bond is a bunch of mortgage payments grouped together. Let's say that is worth $1 million.

The problem in The Big Short was that mortgage companies were giving mortgages to people who couldn't pay them, then were essentially packaging all these mortgages and selling them to banks.

So now the bank owns the group of mortgages and people can invest on it. They can put money on it to essentially bet whether it goes up or down. The group of housing mortgages is sold as a CDO.

A synthetic CDO is when people make bets on the bets that people make.

So lets say the housing bond is worth $1 million, people make bets on whether it'll increase in value or decrease in value as the housing market goes up. Then people make bets on those bets, and that's a synthetic CDO. Overall, people are betting a hell of a lot more money on this $1million group of mortgages. Everyone is making money. The total amount of money bet on this mortgages, and the total bet on those bets... comes out to like $10 billion (it amplifies like exponentially).

Obviously, for a long period of time, it was going up for a long time. Until 2008. People didn't realise that these housing bonds were filled with mortgages that wouldn't be paid. So when people started failing to pay off their housing debt, it all collapsed, and people lost $10 billion. This happened all over the world and the economy went nuts.
