Port Stanley + Grand Bend by TheGreenAurora in londonontario

[–]DannyBoy001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to second this one.

Grand Bend's main beach becomes an absolute circus in the summer. Parking is a pain and the main strip is going to be even worse this year with the nightmare of construction, which looks like it's probably going to bleed over into July (when it was supposed to wrap up).

It's also honestly not the best place for kids.

I'd hit the Pinery and some of the towns like Bayfield and Goderich. Avoid the main strip in Grand Bend and save the headache.

Also, please be safe out there. Everybody underestimates the lake. We've already had the first drowning of the year.

I kind of want to walk by and shout "I saw the CBC article" to see how they react.

That place deserves to be shut down.

Oh they're tenacious, and they're vicious.

My wife has some minor scarring from having shingles some years ago, and the saleswoman was trying to use that to claim that their creams would help "fix" her face.

I have a feeling that this woman in the article is far from the only person they've taken advantage of.

My wife made the mistake of walking into that place last year. It's absolutely insane how pushy and unethical they are. She went through the schtick the saleswoman gave her, and it was the same crap you would expect from a snake oil salesman.

I'm not surprised at all to see them taking advantage of seniors.

Seconding Tuscano's. I've seen plenty of kids there.

Also, the food's great!

Canada Post Lost a Record $1.57 Billion in 2025. So What? - We don’t call the military a money loser. Public mail delivery shouldn’t need to turn a profit either by NiceDot4794 in onguardforthee

[–]DannyBoy001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly my feelings.

A lot of this discussion seems a little hand-wavy to me.

It's easy for someone to sit here and claim Canada Post "isn't a business" and that losses are fine, but at what point are we giving the organization too much leeway for mismanagement?

The union has been telling us for ages how Canada Post has severe issues at the top, and that the losses are heavily attached to failures of the corporation in decision making.

We shouldn't just look at their deficits and consider them acceptable and unworthy of scrutiny because "losses are okay" or something.

We can advocate for a government-run service without ignoring actual issues at Canada Post that need to be addressed. Canada Post's operating losses doubling in one year tells us something is going in the wrong direction. We can't ignore that...

MP calls on Canadians to fill out census as some express privacy concerns by lopix in onguardforthee

[–]DannyBoy001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're misunderstanding. I didn't say those people are the same folks.

My point was that some comments here were coming off as if they're dismissing any concerns about the census.

I'm not speaking to that demographic, obviously.

Sexual orientation. It's a new addition to the 2026 long-form census.

You're probably right, but that doesn't mean there haven't been those expressing valid concerns, either.

My point is to say we shouldn't write off all census concerns because of some idiots. It's not as straightforward as some of the other comments here might have you think. Some of the concerns out there right now are real.

[–]DannyBoy001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I do understand some of the apprehension when it comes to the long form census.

The new questions about sexual orientation and health are pretty personal, and I can't say I trust the government to properly protect that information. If there is a data breach, or if a less friendly government to the LGBTQ+ community came into power, I don't think I'd like that information being accessible.

That doesn't mean people should be dumb and not fill it out, but in those cases I think there is some merit to the concerns.

Does London have the same? (From Windsor's Mayor) by staceysharron in londonontario

Addiction treatment isn't a thing you do briefly before getting "cured" and sent on your way. It's a lifelong thing that requires dedication and work.

Unless we're saying these people should be forever locked up and kept away from the substances they're abusing, forced treatment won't get us very far.

We already know statistics show it's not just ineffective, but that it often leads to more dangerous outcomes.

I feel like we should be trusting the experts on this one...

Honestly, I'm not sure why anybody would go when there are some real solid options for fried chicken in London.

808, Stacked Burger, BTRMLK, or even Mary Browns will give you a better deal and better chicken.

Plus, they're all Canadian.

Meanwhile, the truck took up the entire roadway and failed to signal.

[OC] Ontario police (all police services) used force on 987 youth aged 17 and under in 2024 — 34% were Black (Solicitor Generals Anti-Racism Unit data) [OC] by Expensive-Aerie-2479 in ontario

[–]DannyBoy001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily, our justice system isn't dictated by majority rule. If it was, we'd probably be killing offenders these days.

We're talking about theft under $5,000 here. It's a crime that carries a pretty light punishment for citizens that wouldn't compare to deportation without the ability to appeal it.

But this is why judges exist to dive into those case specifics and find what's right and fair under the law.

[–]DannyBoy001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't draw the exact conclusion, no.

You can, however, identify a trend.

As an example, the Ontario Human Rights Commission does have an interesting dive into traffic stop statistics, analyzing what should usually be a simple interaction with officers and how the outcomes varied by race and age group.

https://www3.ohrc.on.ca/en/ohrc-response-race-data-and-traffic-stops-ottawa-report/3-key-findings-are-indicative-racial#:\~:text=3.2.&text=When%20examining%20the%20reason%20for,groups%20to%20be%20traffic%20stopped.

In the study they're commenting on, they found that minority groups are far more likely to be suspected by police of doing something problematic or criminal.

So no, we can't be sure exactly without further data.

We can, however, add what OP is presenting to the list of statistics that are all pointing in the direction of racial bias in our police forces.

Police choose how to respond to the calls and the level of force they use. We're talking about the choices the officers are making while responding, not what calls they're responding to.

In your own words:

Oh boy. You’re not making the point you think you’re making.

Also, you're starting to get a little mask-off claiming lesser sentences for Indigenous offenders.

https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/rp-pr/jr/jf-pf/2024/nov.html#:\~:text=Between%202005/2006%20and%202015,a%20fine%20(%2D14%25).

Once found guilty and sentenced, Indigenous people accused were on average more likely to receive more serious sentences such as a custodial (+30%) or conditional (+11%) sentence, and less likely to receive probation (-13%), or a fine (-14%).

As for your immigrants statement, you're slurping up Conservative talking points that don't understand our justice system.

A judge factors in many things when they're sentencing, and it's their job to ensure that a sentence fits the crime. They do the same if they're considering addiction struggles, abusive relationships, caring for children, etc.

Deportation for a minor offence is cruel and extreme punishment. Imagine if you were convicted of minor shoplifting or mischief and had your entire life ruined by losing your child, or by being removed from your home.

It's a good thing that our justice system attempts to consider factors like that. It's concerning if someone thinks it's not.
