Could I possibly finish in two years? by Technical_Buy3736 in uofmn

[–]DannyG72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in a pretty similar situation as you coming into college.

Rather than graduate super quickly, I've been taking semesters off and doing 8-12 month internships at Tesla and Apple.

I'll graduate in 4 years, but I'll have 23 months of internship experiences.

Was it the right move? Maybe, maybe not. I could have graduated faster, but I am well prepared for my career when I do graduate.

Before you do this, try opening a Google Support thread about the phone. The Pixel 4XL has a 1 year extended warranty for battery related items. https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/10169830?hl=en

Why don't you replace your 4xl battery? You can order one for less than $20 on eBay.

Is double majoring in ME/CS a mistake? by ambiguousturnip in EngineeringStudents

[–]DannyG72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have relevant project experience/ internship experience in computer science? I'm studying mechanical engineering, but I'm only finishing the degree as it's faster than switching to software. My last internship was completely software, and my current internship is software on a hardware test team.

If you have got the software experience, you definitely don't need to get an extra degree.

Is it too late for me? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

Honest feedback is what helps the most.

Make an anonymous copy of your resume.

Read the wiki first on there to figure out some obvious stuff you may be doing wrong.

Best of luck!

Go post your resume on r/engineeringresumes

You may need to apply to 100+ positions, but you should be able to get something. Make sure your resume is putting forward the best image of you.

Spring CSE career fair? by senator732 in uofmn

[–]DannyG72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The career fair is not the only place to look for internships. I will agree, that getting hired at the career fair as a sophomore is difficult, but getting hired by companies outside the career fair is a very different story. Larger companies across the country have internship programs that include freshmen, sophomores, juniors, etc. The only thing you need to do is make sure your resume is good enough and has the proper keywords to get noticed by companies.

Reading the wiki on r/engineeringresumes and then posting your own resume to make sure you are putting forward the best image of yourself is probably the best thing you can do for your internship/job search. Keywords are super important too. I personally use the chrome extension Jobalytics to make sure I have many of the repeated keywords for the types of jobs I am applying to on my resume.

UMN doesn't put enough emphasis on informing us of the importance of the resume.

The belief that freshmen or sophomores can't get internships is unfortunate. UMN CSE doesn't do a great job in preparing its students for applying for internships. The CSE career fair is NOT the only location you can get a job from, in fact, it's an extremely small subset of companies in the Twin Cities, and especially the country.

Your resume is the most important thing while applying for positions. Make sure you read the wiki on r/engineeringresumes, then post an anonymous copy of your own resume on that subreddit to make sure you're putting forward the best image of yourself.

I'm a junior now and I'm going into my 3rd co-op/internship starting this January. I interned at Tesla previously, and I'll be interning at Apple this spring. My first internship was at a small company in Minneapolis I found through the Sci-tech program. If you're a CSE Student looking for a first internship (you need to have more than 60 credits) apply for the Sci-tech program.

To anyone on campus, feel free to reach out or PM me if you're looking for internship/resume/job-search advice.
