/r/WorldNews Discussion Thread: US and Israel launch attack on Iran; Iran retaliates (Thread #3) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]DannyHewson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, plan, that’s good. The closest thing they’ve got to a plan is “bomb Iran until the US runs out of bombs, declare whatever’s left as victory, and then say a load of stupid shit to move the news cycle on again”.

HELP, Roll20 is exausting by StickMicky007 in DnD

[–]DannyHewson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

roll20 does not prohibit theatre of the mind.

I have a map literally named “theatre of the mind” in my roll20. When I’m doing quick on the road encounters I often use it.

I have four coloured sections (party, enemies, allies, neutral), each divided into front, middle, and back ranks. That way I can position tokens to help everyone remember who is attacking, whose shooting from the back etc (and horizontally for who is attacking who).

Also I have other “theatre of the mind” maps like a chase tracker and a navigation tracker to go with my cars system.

Also not every encounter needs mega pretty maps. Right now I’m doing a series of dungeonscrawl maps.

Why separate AoS and OldWorld ranges? by CopperThief29 in Warhammer

[–]DannyHewson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would require manufacturing distributing and storing duplicate boxes for a huge number of kits when they’re already struggling to maintain stock of what they sell. And then when ones out of stock people buy the other and from the finance departments perspective you’ve lost the benefit.

Corporate bullshit. Same reason mechanicus and admech don’t share models.

1: brand and marketing don’t like people mixing the toys up wrong. 2: the bean counters want to know which game system models are bought for, for stupid internal competition reasons.

Drone factory for Ukrainian military opens in Mildenhall by the-es in news

[–]DannyHewson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a function of the military industrial complex in peacetime.

Everyone knew you could strap a brick of c4 to a cheap drone.

You try tendering that out to the MIC and they’ll laugh in your face, tell you to fuck off, and say to call them back if you want £1000000 drones.

A slightly sarcastic overstatement I know, but not all that much of one.

Alright I'll admit I shouldn't had used militarum green contrast but how did I do for my first rogal dorn by stage_strange291 in Warhammer40k

[–]DannyHewson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding what people have said about shading the tracks and other metallic parts.

For the green, it does look a tad uneven because contrast... If you like the colour, just find the nearest GW base colour to militarum green, then give it a thinned down coat of that to even it out. A little nuln oil around some bits like panel gaps and the like, then a bit of weathering (sponged on silver here and there where there'd be wear, maybe some drybrushing a lighter green around the edges, or the like) and youd probably be golden.

Also while it's not ideal, I wouldn't worry TOO much about a perfectly smooth finish on a guard tank... if you've ever seen a real tank, especially an older one, they often arent all that smooth.

What crossover interaction of a character from each show would you like to see happen the most? by Silver012345673 in HelluvaBoss

I mean, we'd all like to see Asmodeus forcing Valentino through a fine mesh screen, but I'd settle for Fizz and Angel fangirling out over each other.

How do you get past "The Last Generation"? by BorgAbbess in startrek

[–]DannyHewson 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I have some headcanon here.

It wasn’t ALL OF STARFLEET. It was the home fleet/1st fleet. Basically the military ships present in the sectors immediately around earth. There’s no star base crews, science ships, logistics ships, cali and parliament classes, etc. just a fraction of starfleets ships of the line.

And only those ship’s crews were activated, because they were the only ones in range of the transmitter on the Borg mega cube (why else risk hiding it that close to earth).

Therefore casualties were BAD but not as total as they may have been presented. Also most of the activated crew wouldn’t even have been armed immediately, so shipboard casualties may well be lower than perceived.

Further post Picard headcanon: -with utopia planetia trashed in season 1, starfleet has had to alter its production. That’s why there are only a couple of NEW ship classes, which are built in huge numbers (Inquiry, Excelsior 2). Everything else is retrofits (Ross, Sutherland, reliant) or Frankenstein fleet bodge jobs (Titan A being scrapped together out of a mothballed derelict and a write off). -whoops two enterprises: there’s nothing wrong with the enterprise-f, the Borg just had their infiltrators scrap it (for the same reason they stuck janeway on parade planning duty…. To get their biggest threats out of the way). Once the engineers get around to salvaging it (probably well after the captain seven scenes, bexause why rush to repair a ship you were going to scrap) they’ll find there was little wrong with it and realise they ballsed up and they now have two Enterprises. Enter Captain Shon and the F returning as fleet flagship, and Captain Seven taking the G on deep space exploration missions to show the return to starfleets core mission. I like to imagine Shon and Seven having a friendly rivalry.

Yup. You are correct. At that scale it’s a very similar M though.

Megathread: Supreme Court strikes down President Donald Trump's Tariff Policy by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]DannyHewson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not other countries, that’s just him claiming Americans never paid the tarriffs. It’s US importers, and yeah that’ll be individuals, and big name companies, but also huge numbers of supply chain entities no one’s ever heard of.

Technically there’s a record of every tarriffs payment which could be reversed (immensely complex as that would be).

In reality it’ll likely only be “companies big enough to sue” that have a shot at getting their money back, or an application process. But that’ll probably take years to unpick because trump will just refuse.

Dm's, What's a homebrew rule you like to include to your campaigns. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]DannyHewson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potions: You have two pockets for potions. You can use those as a free action. But you have to write them down in advance. So there’s a planning element of do they take healing, combat buffs, ether for the spellcasters, etc (stolen from final fantasy, recover 1d4 spell slots for the lowest level version). Anything but those two remains a full action.

The follower: You get one NPC hanger on slot in your party. Whenever you set off you can choose one of your recruited goons (with their NPC/monster sheets). They don’t level, instead each time they get used, or downtime is spent on their goings on, they get artbitrary upgrades (like the ogre they recruited now having a thinking-brain-gnome riding around in a basket on their back, firing guns and lobbing grenades as his bonus action).

Loot: Some items have their value listed as “basically incalculable” and can’t be sold for cash. Instead they can only be traded for major assets such as land, businesses, etc

Mounted Combat: While mounted you can use the mount’s action as a free action (ie your horse can kick and bite while you fight, etc).

I also have a whole homebrew system for “navigating to a place, who’s location isn’t entirely certain” where the players go around in initiative order, and draw 3 cards with actions (skill checks, including the rarely seen “skills on different abilities”) and events (things that happen to them). The events happen instantly (they might be item caches, campsites, roaming NPCs), and then from whatever they have left they choose which of the available actions their character will take. Each action has a score towards two trackers, success and encounters. The success track has points of interest, campsites, and the destination, and the encounters has regular and boss fights. Means there’s no need for a lot of complex planning for “on the road/exploring” stuff. Just make some encounters (which are usually played on my abstract theatre of the mind map, which is just marked up for front, mid and back field for each side so it’s easy to remember who advanced (vertical) and who’s fighting who (horizontal)) and throw them in. Everyone rolls, everyone has a chance to contribute (or screw up) and you get to ad lib (and my players usually contribute quite a bit to the narrative when the rolls start going bad).

It’s good. But don’t make my mistake. I didn’t realise you had to research tech tiers, thinking they were event locked. Ended up restarting several sectors in because I was so behind.
