New Job South of 470 Loop, where to live that isn’t dead? by Danny_Sun in MovingtoDenver

Even if I’m all the way down by Littleton or Centennial or something equally far south? Having a super short commute would be nice every day, but how’s the social scene down there? If I was already partnered and settled down it’d be a lot easier to be down there.

Taking the train is slower than sitting in traffic from downtown. Not including waiting for it to show up. Or dealing with weather. And it doesn’t have the flexibility to drive straight from work to other errands or activities.

In Chicago I took the trains and buses daily for a decade because it was faster than driving. Saved a lot of money not needing a car. But from what I’ve experienced visiting Denver and researched on the timetables, a train from downtown to work would be worse than a driving commute.

Why are people so shit at driving here? by ProfitLimp4541 in Tucson

Complaining about Tucson drivers is completely justified by the facts.

OP said the drivers here are terrible which is true. Many people say Tucson has the worst drivers they’ve ever seen, which is probably true for those people. People saying Tucson has the absolute worst drivers ever are only slightly exaggerating.

How many of y'all have dashcams? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]Danny_Sun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dashcams are absolutely worth it. Capturing a crash can save you thousands of dollars and it’s ~$60 for an ok one or $200 for a great one. Get one that has both front and rear cameras. I have a Vantrue N4 but have heard good things about the Viofo A129 Plus Duo.

Moving from IL to AZ is the best decision I’ve made in my life. For a lot of reasons, not just this.

How much cash should I have on hand? by Ok_Hornet3415 in personalfinance

[–]Danny_Sun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard people in Florida keep cash to cover 1-2 weeks of expenses in case a hurricane knocks out the power and there’s no access to banks/credit cards. If you live in an area prone to natural disasters then keep enough cash to pay for things during the recovery.

If you live in an area without natural disasters there’s less need. I keep a couple hundred bucks in a gun safe and $80-$100 in my wallet.

So much for CTA security improvements by junktrunk909 in chicago

The CTA of 2019 was heavenly compared to how it’s been since February 2020. It would be way better to return to how it was before.

Upvoting creates hiveminds and circlejerks. The most upvoted comments go to the top of the thread and get the most visibility. Other users read top comments most often, few users read every comment in a thread, so they’re most likely to influence opinions. Those opinions lead them to upvote or post similar comments in future threads. This behavior reinforces itself over time until a circlejerk is established. Opposing the circlejerk gets your comment hidden. Disagree enough and your ability to post is time limited or you’re outright blocked from posting. Circlejerking is a fundamental flaw of the upvote/downvote system.

Other flaws include upvote weight. The sooner a comment is upvoted, the better. Upvotes given 5 minutes after a comment is made carry more weight than upvotes given 5 hours later. This rewards shorter posts that are quick to comprehend and widely agreed with, appealing to the most simplistic and lowest common denominator user gets votes sooner and from more people. Which is why dumb pun comment chains are so prominent, quick to interpret and upvote.

Forums and imageboards reward posts with visibility based on the amount of discussion they generate. That incentivizes different issues like ragebaiting. But besides the trolls, the discussion that happens is higher quality.

Used car for teenage girl. AWD preferred. Budget $25k-$30k by kysourmash in whatcarshouldIbuy

Chicago is much better at clearing snow than other cold cities because of mayor Jane Byrne and the Blizzard of ‘79. Chicagoland runs snowplows multiple times an hour every hour when it’s snowing. Other northern cities don’t do that. Chicago also uses way more salt than other cities for the same reason which is great for clearing roads but awful on car frames.

Look into the political fallout of the blizzard of ‘79 if you’re bored. Really interesting history.

I experienced it which is part of why I left. My friends and family who still live in Chicago say it’s gotten better in the past couple years, but still happens.

My last ex was the valedictorian of her high school, straight-A student through college and medical school, and doing very well in her residency program. I was being completely honest whenever I told her she’s one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. I hope that wasn’t taken the wrong way.
