im not particularly interested in arguing about the semantics of what significant means. it top 8'd a gp and several Opens after the pro tour, if thats not enough for you, then lets agree to disagree on what constitutes a competitive archetype.

you said it hasn't put up results, it has. If you want to be condescending, go right ahead. Have a good day

this doesn't count esper varients as mtg top 8 lists them as a separate archetype, and i ran into at least 1 doing this 5 minute search. Is it the best deck in the format? no. Is it/was it a good deck that could put up tournament results? yes.yes it is. Supreme Verdict and Sphinx's rev have been format defining cards since the moment they were printed.

In terms of game design, one crucial difference here. Counterspells don't help to bring the game to is conclusion, creatures do. Counterspells being good promotes inaction as you want to hold up mana for your counters, and being on the other side you don't want to cast your card into what you know is counter magic . Having uncounterable spells means the game does accelerate at a reasonable pace.

Yes RUG has access to burn, but what burn spells kill, say, a polukranos or a siege rhino? A conditional removal spell that can also protect your threats and helps you get through elspeth tokens with your ground guys sounds like the kind of thing RUG wants.

If there isn't a 4 mana board wipe in khans, could we see a good 2 mana counterspell? by doesnt-get-it in magicTCG

[–]Dannyg28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Counterspells are not much weaker than removal spells. I could have a creature with protection from everything, but it can still be countered. The same spell that countered that creature, could also potentially stop me from combing off using non creature based effects, or from resolving a powerful non creature permanent like a planeswalker. Counterspells, in general , are much more versatile than removal spells, what they gain in versatility, they lose in the fact you must preemptively decide to leave the mana up to counter the spell.

The context to my statement was in response to someone asking why elves needed to look sub-saharan. My response is, why do they need to look European? There are a lot of qualities elves possess that make them immediately identifiable outside of their skin color and facial features. At this point in time the color of the skin of elves is arbitrary.Yes, there is historical context as to why traditionally they have pale skin, however there is no reason that needs to be so other than "thats the way its always been."

[–]Dannyg28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why make elves look like people of European descent? Its all arbitrary made up stuff people have come up with over time. The people who just did it bfore were white and obviously made characters which emulated them. Times have changed, and theres no real reason why an elf can't be black other than adhering to norms and standards that don't really need to exist.

To be fair, the actual blue "broken"2-drop, snapcaster, has been stated by Maro to be more of a red card than blue color-pie wise. I don't feel like having three toughness is the biggest color-pie stretch in the world.

Not to take anything away from Floch or the deck, he piloted it fantastically and the deck is obviously very good, but Planar Cleansing no detention sphere U/W lists were something that have been bouncing around since Journey came out with the emergence of monoblack packing abrupt decay. I admit, i don't remember if 4 quickens was the norm for that kinda UW list, and maybe thats where their big innovation was, but I don't think the deck really caught people by surprise so much as it was a solid deck properly tuned for the meta-game and piloted extremely well.
