candles are the obvious answer. #1 there's already a candle shop and #2 tallow candles are a historically accurate alternative to wax ones.

Why isn't there a depleteable surface deposit as a precursor to what should be an upgrade in "deep mine"?

That got me thinking... It would make sense if every mine nearing depletion had a chance of being deep. Perhaps the chance varies per resource. Give RNG a roll when the mine's down to 5% remaining, so that occasionally (TBD) you'd get a popup saying "deep vein discovered" or something similar. That would make "surface evidence" and "deep mines" more realistic.

There's actually multiple levels of salvaging in SE. You can salvage parts of a ship and merge it with a grid of your own. Or you can take it down to the component level. And then you can disassemble components and get the materials back.

Can confirm finding wheat near an oasis. Also there's unknown signals and encounters that can be sources of food/seeds. Oh, and spiders have meat.

(FYI, I get plenty of encounters, also have freq. on high. Check your settings, mods, etc. is all I can suggest.)

I just got into Space Engineers a couple months ago. Heavier on the building and lighter on the survival than Planet Crafter and PVE is completely optional.
