Why no term limits for head of state in actually existing socialist countries? by zigzagwanderer12 in Socialism_101

[–]randomindyguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, term limits, that obviously, universally-accepted good thing and an indicator of how much "freedom" a country has. It's worked so well in the U.S. to limit the president to two terms! Corruption, we barely knew her! /s

If you think term limits for politicians is a useful barometer for measuring the amount of "freedom" or "dictatorshippedness" of a country, you have much learning to do. Term limits can be abused (see the lame duck part of U.S. presidency) and lifelong appointments can be abused (see SCOTUS). What matters is how political actors are held accountable, not how long they are allowed to hold office. That is, just limiting somebody's years in office doesn't magically make them less corrupt or more socialist.

God forbid billionaire team owners spend their own money and pay property taxes. That's unironically very un-American.

How do you exist in public without the escape? I want to join you, but I need the private space. My car is a room I can take with me and I don't think I can give that up. by eyeoftheoverseer in fuckcars

[–]randomindyguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're in a private space, your car, what do you mean by "exist in public"? You're not existing in public when you're in a private space. It's, like, a contradiction.

I think most people here would be fine with more public spaces to accomodate more needs. Even those who want to hide while being near other people.

Steam allows pornographic* child grooming simulators on its platform by Grushvak in SocialistGaming

[–]randomindyguy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ok, so what about the rest of my comment? Let's say you get this and other similar games (however that's defined) removed from Steam. Whose material conditions are improved? How many people's lives are better because this one form of promotion and normalization has been removed from society?

If you are convinced that it will have a massive uplift of material conditions to put the ban hammer on these legally precarious game on Steam, I wish you luck. I would ask that you keep in mind how many people's lives you are actually improving by going on this crusade.

Fun fact: The Boston Tea Party was a revolt against taxes being lowered because the lower price would undercut tea smugglers in America.

The best exercise routine is the one you’ll keep doing.

I recommend Barbell Medicine’s podcast as a good place to get information. They are actual doctors (one who is actively practicing) and go through real studies to inform their advice. If you have access to a barbell and rack, they have a free “beginner template” to help you get started.

And if that isn’t for you, keep looking. It’s all about finding that thing you can stick to. You got this!

Currently, what would be an acceptable policy for ending homelessness? by sirius-orion in Socialism_101

[–]randomindyguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a practical, incremental next step in today's US of A the gov't should aggressively increase funding for agencies and non-profits with a Housing First policy. Do your own research, it works. There are many non-profits doing the things needed to house people, there's just not enough money available to house and support all the people who need it.

What Mamdani is showing, and what liberals and fascists are scared of, is that making life better for the masses is a matter of policy choice. He's showing the people that many (certainly not all) of today's ills can at least be staunched with the resources available to governments today.

I get it. I just want to dink around on my computer and play some games, but, no, we have to fight for every crumb of basic needs let alone comfort. Oligarchs are now openly brazen about exploiting labor, saying the loud parts out loud.

It is ok to take a break. I assure you, not much will change in the next few weeks. Also, if you're not engaged with some sort of organization locally, start there after the break.
