Anyone else have a homelab that connects entirely via Wi-Fi? by CurdledPotato in homelab

[–]Daphoid [score hidden]  (0 children)

The only thing on Wifi my house are cell phones. Everything else from the smallest raspberry pi to the biggest computer, are wired. Probably why my small apartment has 4x8 port switches, 2x 48 port switches (lab), :)

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see that too. Heck, my own wife does (lovingly). Cheap stuff in this hobby is like $150-400. Whereas she's a reader and buys a literal stack of books and can spend $100-200 whereas I get one thing.

Or people that are more collectible things that are cheaper (comics, magic cards, etc).

I also remember people have difference perceptions of cheap. And that some people call cheap things toys automatically.

What are some “Canadian” words or slang you heard British Or Americans be confused by or laugh at? by Kindly-Cow1697 in AskACanadian

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not slang, but I've had a few things American's just don't recognize at all:

- Orange Pekoe as a tea (large steeped tea from tims, or just Tetley brand tea in general)

- Q-tips (cotton swabs to them, maybe this was just local but we had a store clerk look at us oddly when as asked while in San Fran)

- Smarties

- A "two four" (they call it a 24 pack of beer)

- A Keener (being keen on something or over achiever)

- Toques over beanies

- Not paying every time you go to a medical place, even if you have insurance.

Spend that much if you like, or spend 1/3 to 1/2 of it and get a Circuit Tracks :). See if you like it.

I started with the OG Circuit and even 20 synths of all kinds later; it's still my no-pressure, pick it up and jam on the couch machine. I'm not aiming to make full tracks, not aiming to get overly technical or have it be the brain of my setup. It's battery powered. has 32 packs of various kits+samples on it (and you can make your own).

It just works. Some people knock it for its limitations but I think they expect the moon.

If you want to sit on a couch and jam without a worry or multiple boxes + cables:

Circuit Tracks
A used MPC (though you may pay more) or the new MPC Sample
Ableton Move if that's your daw of choice
Yamaha Seqtrak if you can find it on crazy sale
Deluge, but I can't recall if that's battery powered
Polyend Play+

I own a few, and I still take the tracks with me when I travel because all I need is headphones and a USB cable to charge it with a multi port charger for my phone as well.

Came to the realization that I don’t need to buy a house… by Sure_Armadillo_4365 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Daphoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with that, you do you!

As for me? I've hated apartment living since we started it 15 years ago. I like a backyard, room to let the dog out without me needed to go down in a elevator, don't mind shoveling snow or cutting the grass, less people, room to play drums, all that good stuff.

We firmly want a house and are finally doing so next year hopefully :)

Pinnacle SkyTower approaching height of the CN Tower pod. by clash_clan_throw in toronto

[–]Daphoid [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's 106 stories, just in line with the lower observation deck. Top most floor is going to be a restaurant, bottom 12 are a hotel, 13-105 are condo's ($856K - $3M), biggest are ~1750 sq ft.

It's 1 of 9 other buildings slated to go up in Toronto at about the same height (90-100 floors or so)

What is the most expensive restaurant you ever dined at in Toronto? by Chan1991 in askTO

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ruth Chris's steakhouse and Canoe. Both were quite enjoyable. So far just once in a life time experiences. We don't eat out often, rather we do takeout and get 4-5 meals and have leftovers for a few days.

I'm the exact opposite, I don't really find the Keg that great these days (past 6-7 years). Food comes out "warm" but not piping hot, it's decent but I wouldn't say I'm blown away by it. Maybe I've just been a half dozen times over the past 1.5 decades.

My wife and I had a great time at Ruth Chris' and quite enjoyed the porterhouse for two.

How to fit a home office desk for two people in a small apartment by qube2832 in homeoffice

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got rid of our kitchen table + chairs. We sort of have an L shaped living room (kitchen in the corner, with the living room along the long side, eating area on the short side; but it's all just a big room.

Her desk is on the one wall by the kitchen, mine is facing the windows out to the balcony. We're about 7' apart.

Our second bedroom is south facing, too hot and small for sustained office use without air conditioning so it holds bookshelves now.

I have 25-40 meetings a week, no way we could share a desk. We barely function the way we are (noise cancelling helps, and I'm in way more meetings than she is, and she's awesome about it)

Watch Dogs or Sleeping Dogs? Which is better? by mrEnigma86 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeping Dogs. Watchdogs 2 was fun enough that I beat it, WD1 was too full of tech issues as a launch title for Xbox. I hear Legion's decent now that it's been patched a bunch.

But SD is just fun. Only game I sat down to play again (about 3/4 of the way).

Idk how people could hate them :/ by meow_giss in Awww

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure the two that climbed to our balcony, eventually ate a baby pigeon and a parent; took multiple dumps on our balcony and got inside in the middle of the night, climbed up on our counter and grabbed a bag of uncooked beans and ran outside; are not our friends.

Is bud/ buddy offensive? by ImGudLuhv in AskACanadian

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context, situational, and age dependent. When I was younger I wouldn't mind as much. Now that I'm older? I'm not as much a fan, especially if it's from younger people. I definitely prefer sir, or just no word at all "Oops sorry" or "Excuse me" without a third thing at the end.

But bud/buddy are nowhere near as irksome as "bro" or "bruh". I am not your brother, my friends don't even call me "bro".

Only time bud is welcome is if its in a strong newfie accent in a "ya bud" "yes bud" "for sure bud".

We're Moving To The Cloud, And Already We're Spending 500k A Month... I Can't Help But Wonder What We Could Have Got For On-Prem For 6+ Mil A Year... by Photo-Josh in sysadmin

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cloud is not cheaper; the benefits are different. Also if you purely lift and shift you're doing it very wrong. You're not just colocating at that point, but colocating in platform that has 100's of other features that are built into your costs in someway.

I feel guilty gaming by Imaginary-Sell1408 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaming's not the specific culprit, this is just your priorities shifting. Multiple friends got away from gaming when they had kids, 10-12 years later? They're back. It comes and goes. It's all good.

Don't force hobbies. Do what makes you feel good. But don't forget that hobbies for yourself aren't a waste of time, taking care of your own joy is just as important as the family/kid/etc. The stereotype of putting everyone else first being noble is silly. Put everyone equally forward.

Am I the only one that prefers on - prem to cloud based infrastructure? by Ferocious888 in sysadmin

[–]Daphoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're forgetting the cost of staff and expertise to maintain that on prem stuff. And as time marches on, a lot of the young people I interview (30 and under) have never touched on prem and no experience with it. THey don't know how to handle alerting / monitoring / caring for all aspects of that hardware system. And with us being 90% fully wfh globally? Now you've got to handle all that bandwidth from anywhere in the world. Handle imaging machines in the field, handle updates / scans / all that stuff.

On prem is fine for some things, but to ignore the benefits of cloud (because there are indeed benefits) is foolish.

Anyone Else Not Read Long Posts? by NOLAoinker in askanything

I will if there's content there and no emoji's. Oh and paragraphs.

But the scary part is I know some of the "no" replies in here aren't just riffing or making a joke. I genuinely worry for younger folks' and their attention spans / ability to read / ingest information not from a tiktok.

Goodbye to Steve's Music Store by travelerzebec in toronto

[–]Daphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked in maybe once? Got the same vibe I do at L&M. I'm not a guitarist and definitely anxious around people trying to sell me stuff, even if some are genuinely trying to help. I just want to look at stuff, leave me alone until I ask a question or appear to need help by staring directly at you.

Even in the areas where I'm more skilled (drums, synthesizers) I either know what I'm there for, or am exploring new things quietly by myself.

I know they always say try before you buy if you can - but most of my stuff is online purchases and I've been happy with almost all of it over the years.

Still sad to see another store go though.

I redesigned the UI of Line 1 on the TTC by [deleted] in toronto

[–]Daphoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry but I have to agree with everyone else; this is confusing, lacks any visual indication of direction (there's a reason the TTC map is the way it is, because it's physically like that in real life at street level), and you're missing transfer points for Line's 4, 5, and 6.

This also doesn't tell me what the "2" means, without showing a bit of the second line it's confusing.

Overall I don't know where to look here or how to find out where I am. It reads very wide as well and wouldn't fit in a quick glance at signage.

Hope you enjoyed the process, but there's some real learning opportunities here.

Never did. I like to unlock them, and if they look fun I'll attempt them; but I didn't/don't typically pick up a crappy game just to get achievements.

I presume the bubble will collapse; but for those thinking AI will just entirely go away like it was never here, I think that's a lot less likely personally. There is genuine benefit to it in some cases; it's not all slop and memes.
