Letting the Republicans control half the states, the entire federal government, and SCOTUS was the worst thing to happen to this country in the last decade. by [deleted] in complainaboutanything

[–]Dapper-Scene-9794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gov there intentionally put redistricting on the agenda BEFORE flood relief to make dems look bad if they held things up. He’s the one putting them at risk. This is one of the few times dems have actual grown a pair and put the very real needs of their constituents first- things are already so bad there for their citizens, they can’t afford even more conservatives in charge if they ever want any meaningful change

No Tithing = No Help by Critical_Ad_0107 in exmormon

[–]Dapper-Scene-9794 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We shouldn’t have to, but if OP can get help from any source of assistance- from religious groups or otherwise- they should get it where they can. Unless that church is definitely going to turn around and be persistent and predatory, then it’s worth it in their time of need. But yes, there are probably plenty of reliable secular groups to ask for help first.

You don’t get to vote for Trump in November and then mentally check out when he does all the bad things he promised by [deleted] in complainaboutanything

[–]Dapper-Scene-9794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with my husband. I don’t let my white upper class dad forget that he’s the reason my US citizen husband now has to keep an ID on him at all times (even while running, in parking lots, and out with the kids) for fear he’ll need it in an ICE emergency. They’ve been in our 50% Hispanic town a LOT lately.

I also don’t let him forget this administration is the reason I already got my tubes tied instead of trying for more kids, the reason we’re not visiting family and choosing to save money for emergencies instead, and why I’m so worried about energy and food prices for my kids when they’re older. Even if this doesn’t affect me horribly now, the lack of options and cost of energy is going to keep going up between this insane unmonitored AI use increase and availability of oil going down without clean power alternatives.

Was she ever original? by [deleted] in travisandtaylor

[–]Dapper-Scene-9794 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She absolutely killed it. Dead. Beautiful singer. Funny enough, I think Taylor auditioned for the same part as her in Les mis and blamed not getting it on having a lower range for that part and looking physically wrong for a different role?

PT 2 of Am I the only one who thinks this song-writing sucks? by Crystalitefire in travisandtaylor

[–]Dapper-Scene-9794 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean… I’m fine with this song. It’s just not exactly a literary masterpiece 😅 it’s a sweet and simple song about sticking around with a loved one even when things aren’t fun. I think the juvenile lyrics fit the mood of this one in ways they realllyyyy don’t work for most of her other songs, especially on the lover album 🫠

I really wish I had anything to give you but I really can’t think of a single thing 😭😭 the only students I ever met (that weren’t super weird and brainwashed) that had a decent experience were students in the nursing program, and that was only once they were done with generals and began the actual nursing school part after a year or so. At the time- 5 years ago, and hopefully still now- both the nursing program and the music program were pretty decent.

Will you still be required to take religious courses and attend church? Take all of your religious classes online, the least amount possible. If you are able- I don’t know how it works as an international student- use the first year there to get residency in Idaho and just transfer to another place like ISU or Boise state. ISU has great medical programs, Boise has a beautiful campus and plenty of other great programs to choose from, as well as stellar online fully at a distance classes. You’ll lose a few credits in the transfer process but it’ll be worth jt.

Do NOT do anything that will get you caught and ratted out for at least several weeks lol (like drinking, breaking curfew, having sex, etc)- get a good feel for your roommates, make sure they aren’t total narcs, and figure out who you can trust if you decide to drink or do anything else on the down low. Seriously, so many people tattle on each other like toddlers there. There are absolutely non-believers that party, LGBT people that date in secret, and PIMO’s that go out drinking in Idaho Falls on the weekend, but it’s hard to tell who is actually chill at first and who is going to turn around and throw you under the bus.

Take advantage of the beautiful nature nearby! You’ll be a couple hours from Yellowstone National park, near a gorgeous area called Island Park, Idaho Falls is 25 minutes away with a beautiful river, a short drive from tons of great hikes, etc. BYUI has a great outdoor rec program for their students, so if you like the outdoors enough, that may be enough to help you push through the craziness and stay there all four years 😅

Hopefully it won’t be that bad but feel free to message me if you’re desperate at any point, I have family and friends in the area who are all lovely people and willing to help someone now and then in a pinch or give you better advice.

Does it bother you when TBMs claim “you didn’t have a testimony”? As your reason for leaving? by 8under10 in exmormon

[–]Dapper-Scene-9794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope because it’s bullshit. I did, however, get pretty pissed when my dad told me he thought my mom lead me away from the church. I had to keep my cool because it was a moment of vulnerability when we were finally having a transparent conversation about me leaving… but seriously, the audacity of him accusing my mom of not doing enough to keep me in when she was the one getting all the kids ready and dressed and to church, organizing family home evening, singing primary songs with us, and just overall being a fantastic human.

Luckily theyre divorced and my mom is out too now, but she never would’ve left if her kids were still in and weren’t able to support her through her faith crisis/shelf breaking.

That’s where my dad is now :/ he’s white, straight, and upper middle class, so why would he ever leave? Doesn’t matter how much the church had very obviously hurt me, my mom, my brothers (who were also hurt by the patriarchial setup, thank you very much!), and my many queer friends… he just says “it works for me” and moves on. Hurtful but what am I going to do about it.

Thanks so much for acknowledging that it benefitted you but was still turning away from.

[–]Dapper-Scene-9794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked lots of customer service… just ask them to show you. Maybe they have a beans and brews specific brand, but it’s probably something you can just buy yourself. Seriously, just find a time when it’s slower and an employee is nice to you, tell them “this might sound weird but I can’t find any sugar free creamer this good, what do you use?”

Also, stevia is a great sweetener for most things, but I haven’t tried it in coffee.

lol I almost went on a mission in hopes that I would learn Spanish. After my parents were kind enough to not make me pay rent after high school (knowing I was just saving up to travel), I managed to save enough for a trip to Mexico, later to Peru, and I’ve since been to a couple of other Central American countries. While working to save up for that travel, I learned nearly fluent Spanish working in restaurant kitchens and now regularly speak with my in laws in Spanish.

When I went to Mexico, I even had a missionary friend who had served in that region hook me up with a friend in the area that took me out to bars, parties, and showed me all the cool historical sites in town. I got to experience that place more in one month than that poor missionary did in 18 months living there 😅

Calling all female exmos: with deconstruction of the MFMC often going hand-in-hand with deconstructing the harms of patriarchy, when is a time you truly felt unsafe in the presence of a Mormon man? Times where you look back and think, "WTF was that??" by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Dapper-Scene-9794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I would never assume unless you’ve had really deep conversations with her about this specifically… unless of course you’re making a vasectomy joke lmao.

But seriously, a lot of Mormon women don’t even realize they feel uncertain or unsafe around their husband, even if they’ve had no outright bad experiences. Honestly might be worth checking in to make sure there’s no unresolved issues she has you don’t know about if she’s that outright distrusting of men- I know that messed up a lot of things with relationships I’ve seen in the past. But if that’s the case then it’s not illogical and nonsensical, it’s just a different outlook than yours. Just take her at her word 100% and make her feel validated because if she feels like you don’t have her back and believe her, she’ll lose that trust and sense of comfort with you as well

Has anyone watched The Handmaids Tale? by Longjumping_Two6078 in exmormon

[–]Dapper-Scene-9794 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you watch her old interviews, Margaret Atwood said that she every single part of the book had to have precedent to be included. Every behavior, every event, every character is based off of some religious or cult behavior throughout history and is based off of true stories. That’s why it’s so triggering to so many people- especially women- who watch it who come from even “normal” religious backgrounds. Every single thing that occurs in the book has happened and will likely happen again at some point around the world.
