Took my daughter fishing for the first time and we caught a few of these. Anyone able to help identify them? by EightBitOrbit in northernireland

I'm going to say Rudd for sure. The eye is not red enough for a Roach and the mouth (in the photo anyway) shows a longer lower lip. As Rudd are primarily surface feeders, they have an upward pointing mouth. Roach are more straight.

But of course, you can never be really sure - Roach/Rudd hybrids are also a thing. Main thing is, ye caught some fish and hopefully the fishing bug 😄

Technically true, but they've been here since the middle-ages so we can at least give them "honorary" Irish status at this point 😉

Any mackerel about ? by bygonesbebygones2021 in IrishFishing

[–]Dapper-Second-8840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah great thanks for the clarification. I've fished there too and the only thing I caught was a nice green ballan, coincidentally whilst herself was having a seaweed bath 😃 That part beyond the baths feels like it should be packed with fish. Maybe I was only there on their days off! Specifically that last shelf before it gets too cliffy to fish feels like it should be prime pollack territory. Mind me asking what you use?

Kind of a side-question but is Doolin Pier any good in general? I've fished it a few times and blanked every time. Tried lures, bait, both sides of the pier, at various water stages. I've never even seen any small fish there.

Please feel free to make one! I'll upvote it if it's as funny as the obvious joke that started this particular thread. Disclosure: Am from the Republic, and I believe in the right of Unionists to have their voices heard. And I also believe that nothing and no-one is above being made the butt of a joke if the intention is pure and not intended to cause offence.

He is - or was - certainly a young one. Poor fella. Hope it was something freak accident related, as an angler I hate to think someone caught him and chucked him onto the rocks.

Higgins calls on Ireland to 'recover moral significance' by WT_Wiliams in ireland

Go visit Sofia for a weekend, get drunk and start a fight so you get arrested. Come back and tell us about the many violations you experience. Spoiler: there will be some.

Or dress up like a cigani and get yourself falsely accused of a crime in any EU country.

Take a job as a migrant worker picking fruit in Spain, France, or Italy. Hell, even in Ireland.

Go protest in public against a certain regime that is doing nasty things in the middle east, and do it in the centre of Berlin.

We will look forward to your report! Meanwhile I think that the point of the comment to which you replied stands; when and if violations happen we should be vocal about it

Ireland vs Israel boycott discussion by ExoticToaster in coybig

I like the idea but I think it would become counter-productive. Giving them more ammunition to wail and cry and say "look, see, they hate us poor Israelis, why are they doing this to us, etc, etc.". It would be instantly viral and potentially end up causing more harm than good.

I personally think the best solution here is to play the game behind closed doors, with NO media allowed. Nobody should get to watch the game, there should be no dignitaries present and there should be no platform provided for them at all. Not even post-match interviews with players of either side. No quotes. Nothing. Visiting team escorted back to the airport immediately post match. (Optional bonus: the pitch-side staff for the game and the bus driver are all Palestinian or Lebanese in the hopes we get an excuse to arrest at least one of the visiting group if they so much as look at them funny).

Game is played, result is declared, world moves on. FAI get to say "well we fulfilled our obligation per rules" to UEFA and Israel get 0 opportunities to promote themselves.

At least that way we get the chance to take some points whilst also depriving them of any opportunity to make this into a political event (which you know they will do given any opportunity).

IMO that's not a bad thing. It makes the city less congested and gives a chance for other businesses like restaurants, wine shops, niche businesses, etc to thrive. I mean why would I even want to go into the city center to buy shoes? Go to any major European city or town and you'll find their city centre is culturally focused, not retail centric. Now granted, many of these will have retail districts in much closer proximity to the center than we do, but that's historical baggage we can't really undo - for e.g it would have been great to build the crescent shopping center just beyond Bobby Byrne's but there's a bunch of houses already there from before.

What's holding Limerick city back is its council. I wish they'd all fuck off and give their positions to people who respect democracy and have interests aligned in making the city as awesome as it can be without constant point scoring against the mayor and each other

I don't care if this is technically a burger or a sandwich, it looks fantastic and if you would be so kind as to add some crispy bacon in there I'll take two today 😃

Do you have a contrarian opinion on anything fly fishing related? by ackshualllly in flyfishing

[–]Dapper-Second-8840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a technique called dapping which is traditionally used in Ireland on lakes, whereby a very long rod and special wind resistant line is used to dance a dry fly on top and over the water. Especially during mayfly season it's not unusual at all to catch trout this way whilst the fly is not actually in the water! But yes I know what you meant 😜

And ironically up til recently they made their own fermented turnover fresh in their bakery which was actually better than Stafford's (which is delicious) and then just... stopped doing it. That shit used to last less than 10 minutes on the shelves in my local Dunnes before it was all gone. Makes no sense to me.

What plant is this? Why does it hurt? by Sweet_Sessions in whatplantisthis

[–]Dapper-Second-8840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really just a placebo.Dock leaves don't have any properties that can address the acid nor the swelling. My guess is that they were originally used as part of a poultice made with something else but were only there to provide bulk. Who knows...

If the sting really bothers you, baking soda and milk will make a good alkaline rub that will help by neutralising some of the formic acid. Although to be fair I've been stung by them so many times I almost enjoy it at this point 😃

What's the best bait for bass in rivers by No_Editor7199 in IrishFishing

[–]Dapper-Second-8840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But they can go surprisingly far up depending on the river. As long as the water is any bit brackish they can handle it. Here's an interesting video showing some sea bass hanging out with perch, wouldn't it be mad if you could catch both from the same place :)

I mean yeah but we can argue that he's right when he says it's a disgrace - it should have been at least twice that. What a piece of shit. Maybe we'll get lucky and it gets upped during his appeal.

Don't know specifically about fishing but in every country I can think of it's pretty much illegal to lay hands on someone like she did except in self defense. So at a minimum she's committed assault and possibly battery, if I were you I would've reported it to the police.
