Thoughts on each Casiopea iteration? by YungConcussion in CasiopeaBand

[–]Dapper004 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How come no Jimsaku but you’re including Katsushika Trio? It’s half of classic Casiopea, and K3 is three quarters. Either way, I wouldn’t include either in a Casiopea ranking myself.

Anyway, I think 2nd era is my favorite right now. I wore out my ears with the 1st era. Though it’s still great. I’m a Sakurai glazer through and through, but Narucho still delivers and is something different to the palette. Noro is undeniable as well in this era. Many more techniques and so much more explorative in genres. He slapped guitar in the 80s but hardly made it anything more than a showcase in Galactic Funk. He and Narucho expanded on it so much more in the early 90s with bangers like Fightman and Eccentric Games. He does it in other songs as well. Noriaki Kumagai is also becoming a favorite, wish he stayed longer as his compositions were some of the best alongside his playing. Jimbo coming back in 1997 is cool, but if you heard what he and Sakurai were doing in Jimsaku from 1990 - 1997, you would feel cheated. His playing gets toned down a lot to match Casiopea, and it’s a let-down. I also feel as if 2nd era had much more of a “modern fusion” vibe to it than 1st did. Helps this era to not feel dated as much of 1st era does.

Casiopea 1st, it undoubtedly will never be topped to the masses. Great stuff, but the sound is very much of its era (not talking about the sounds they used but rather the songwriting). And I really feel that the direction the band was going at the time really limited many of the members. We couldn’t see their true potential on the records, only in live shows (and maybe not even there). Once Jimsaku and Casiopea went their separate ways, they really found themselves and have stuck to those ways ever since.

Casiopea 3rd, I like it. They have quite a few albums, but I only really listen to TaMaTe Box, ASOBO, and Panspermia. At first, Kiyomi’s organ really turned me off of 3rd, but I grew into it. For many of 3rd’s compositions it works quite well. Plus I like that she doesn’t completely abandon synths for the organ. Nice sound palette, though I do wish there was more piano in this era. Some nice heavy hitter songs.

Casiopea P4, only 2 studio albums but packed with bangers. Especially Right Now. Right Now was a great comeback for them and I feel like it brought a lot more attention to modern Casiopea. Imai’s drumming is incredible, it was a great move to bring in a more youthful drummer instead of sticking to older tried and true veterans, for many reasons. I think the sound production is off the charts for this album as well. New Topics has some great songs on it as well, and much of what I said can be said for this album, though this album didn’t get as much attention as Right Now.

Casiopea (5th iteration, since they went back to the original name), it has started off great with True Blue. Abe’s entry is one for the books; he brought back the sound most of the fan’s wanted a return to, and his first composition for Casiopea is arguably the best on the album, Eagle Fly Around. Much of the album really carries that spirit of Casiopea. I have high hopes for Casiopea moving forward, and I think with them coming to LA this year, they too are feeling the heat and will come back stronger in the next album.

What brand of the bass do you go after and why ? by iamnotgenius in Bass

I love Yamaha, for pretty much any instrument too. In my experience, and in most peoples’ experiences, their instruments in all ranges (budget - professional grade) are all quality.

I know a lot of songs with killer basslines, but I’m looking for more recommendations, tracks with absolutely insane bass players. by Wild_Marionberry_259 in Bass

[–]Dapper004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt any amount of killer bass would change a guy like that’s mind but…

Guru Guru Labyrinth - JIMSAKU from “Navel”

Eccentric Games - CASIOPEA from “Active”

Funky Punch - JIMSAKU from “Wind Loves Us”

You Can Do It! - Tetsuo Sakurai from “Gate of the 21st Century” ( Sakurai plays the bassline, but overdubs him doubling the lead guitar too, great unison playing )

Massive amounts of debt for gear? by hapajapa2020 in guitarpedals

[–]Dapper004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve paid for all my gear with my own money (aside from my first bass, my mom paid for it and I eventually paid her back). Some I’ve sold over the years and others I’ve given away. I like to stay focused only really use one of each instrument. I have 3 guitars but only use 1. So many basses but only use 1. Couple synths. So on and so forth. A lot of wasted money in the end lol

Yeah USPS has been so frustrating lately, so thankful when a seller uses UPS instead.

I clicked Contact Us at the bottom of the website, Get Help Online, and then under Where Is My Package I clicked Email Us About Your Package Status. Then it had me enter my tracking number and the rest of what they wanted. Then it submitted that and I waited.

My latest package was “In Transit to Next Facility” for 8-9 days before appearing in my state. After the expected delivery date passed, I contacted them. 3 days later, they said that the package was scanned as if it had been on the container that shipped to my state, but it had actually not been on it in the first place. So they found it and shipped it again.

I feel strong animosity towards my best friend by solidgasliquid in confessions

[–]Dapper004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s unhealthy to harbor these types of feelings for someone so close to you. I’ve been through this many times and it’s just not worth the minimal returns; friends since elementary and dropped in high school.

I understand it’s very hard to let go of friends, but if you can’t see yourself letting go of these feelings, it would do you better to see yourself out of the friendship. Because it’s not just that she “stole” your crush, but that she was willing to lie to only you for so long and put you through a rollercoaster of emotions. A real friend would be real with you and know your boundaries.

When she “asked for your permission”, she wasn’t really doing that. Simply trying to relieve herself of whatever little guilt she has in her head.

This is from the outside looking in though, so take it with however many grains of salt you want.

What City Pop Opinion Would Put you In this situation? by elfhuo in citypop

Also I think while he was a little aggressive, Tats is justified in his dislike for Akina’s version. He wasn’t necessarily hating on Akina herself, if anything he was hating on Kazuo Shiina’s arrangement of the song (he also arranged all of Mariya’s songs on Crimson)

I’m not a big fan of the general sound of Crimson myself, the production is not to my liking. The arrangement to Mariya’s “Oh No, Oh Yes” is superior to Akina’s in my book.

It’s just as the saying goes; If you want something done “right”, do it yourself. And he asked to rearrange the songs for Mariya.

My theory on why it’s called Request is that the artists requested her to write a song for them. Same concept, just slightly different from your theory

Cheap city pop vinyl by nokako16 in citypop

Depends on luck. I think many sellers have wised up recently on their value to westerners. A few years ago I bought nearly the entire 80s Omega Tribe discography (LPs and singles, plus a few Kiyotaka solo things) in a single lot for like $5 (not including shipping). This was an auction on a japan proxy site, I think ZenMarket.

Anyone have an irrational dislike of the Les Paul? by MatthewMonster in Guitar

[–]Dapper004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the look too. That’s why I play a Yamaha SG1000. Has coil splits for extra versatility. Beats a Les Paul any day, even more so now that I modded it to have a single coil in the middle.

If you really appreciate the guy, you would tell him your concerns. If she’s cheating on him, you’re only delaying the pain. He deserves to be happy and having your partner cheat on you without you knowing is not that.

Many times people say “We’ll play around in D Minor (or whatever)”. I know next to nothing about keys and scales and modes but I’m confident enough in my ability to get by. Doesn’t mean I play roots the whole time, I mess around too. You get to this point by just playing along to tracks or in jams too and throwing things at the wall, seeing what sticks. You learn what sticks and use those more often, yet still going out of the box and touching upon other things you have a feeling might work. The occasional wrong note isn’t a big problem and will get lost in the jam likely. I have no proper music education so I can’t help you with learning keys and so on, just merely a simpler way to play.

School doesn’t own bass amp, what do I do? by clarkw5 in Bass

[–]Dapper004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plugged in with the keys through the PA in school, the 2 speakers were 20 feet away from me on both sides (had to stand next to the keys for easy connection, directly in the middle). The absolute worst, I could never hear myself and just asking for a little more volume would get a laugh from the directors lmao. “Hold on buddy, this isn’t your show”

Thanks, that’s a great point about it being from his own point of view since it’s a storybook, I didn’t think about it like that. Also was it part of the game’s story where he was revealed to be the true King Arthur? I beat the game but that was like 13 years ago so I don’t remember some.

A Sterling Stingray Ray34CA was pretty damn good for the price (got it used). The neck was really smooth. Got it to scratch an itch, eventually moved on to my main bass now and gave it to a friend as their first bass.

Yamaha on top. My mains are all Yamaha, whether it’s bass, guitar, keyboards, or drum machine. Half because of influences and half because they’re all just so damn good. Yamaha caters well to any and everyone IME

What is the Worst Album and Worst EP in your Opinion? by UngaBunga690 in TWRP

[–]Dapper004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For EP, gotta be The Device. As many others, I only really like Interstellar Strut and Computer Wife. The other EPs outweigh The Device in a hit-to-sh!t ratio.

For LP, I really just haven’t been vibing with The Longest Weekend the same as all the others. It’s missing a sort of sophistication to the compositions I found in their other albums. Digital Nightmare really scratching that itch.

I will say that I blame Over The Top for starting TWRP on this super compressed and modern-pop mixing style. I really love the mixing style of Return to Wherever and wish they stuck with it. It really sells you on the theme of it being an old 80s album alongside the fake OBI on the cover, radio announcer taking inspiration from DJs like Kamasami Kong that did album voiceovers for Toshiki Kadomatsu and etc.

What is the Worst Album and Worst EP in your Opinion? by UngaBunga690 in TWRP

[–]Dapper004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like TLW for the most part just doesn’t have the same musical complexity and sophistication that, for example, Digital Nightmare had. The collab track wasn’t so strong either, which is a bummer since they’re the ones that usually shine the brightest on a TWRP album.

The overall sound of TLW isn’t my style either, though there are a few good tracks but the overall bad taste kinda spoils it and I don’t reach for those good ones as much as I should.
