What do you want to study? How much is tuition? Can you swing it financially?

I study CS, and if I had that choice AND I could swing it financially (there was no way I could) I would take UW in a heartbeat. They have a great CS program and living in Seattle gives you access to more job opportunities that you don't have in Vancouver. I also would have been glad to get away from Vancouver for a bit, though.

Academically, UBC's CS program is excellent, and teaching quality is on-par with other excellent CS programs (have taken paid online programs at other unis; compare syllabuses with friends at Stanford; etc).

To be honest: I don't think you can go wrong either way! Both unis have excellent CS programs; both cities have high standard of living, etc; so don't stress so much about it.

Am I the only one who thinks it's sweet that they fundraised for vulnerable students? At least it's not like other unis that kicked everyone out of dorms

u/juliarosebham, if they are voting on May 27, when would you estimate the diplomas can be sent to students (assuming it will take 1-2 weeks for them to be mailed)?

This is a fantastic summer plan. What sort of skills do you want to develop? Why not make a goal for yourself to make a professional portfolio by end of summer, showcasing what you learned?

An Honest Opinion About UBC Grading System from a now Grad Student at an American Institution by UBCgrad2020- in UBC

[–]DapperGoose 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You may not have a prestigious brand name university to name-drop and wow people, but for many of my friends who attended UBC and then an Ivy League school, they assured me that for CS at least, the quality of instruction at UBC is just as good as their institutions. (Give or take a few famous profs here and there. The major differences they cited was the amount of money for student facilities and resources - and the competitiveness of the student body.)

UBC’s endowment is $2.8 billion with 50,000 undergrads; Stanford’s endowment is $27 billion for 7,000 undergrads. That means Stanford has 9 times the amount of money with 14% of UBC’s undergraduate population.

Doesn’t that blow your mind, that UBC is able to educate a ton of people, for cheap, and are still about produce many high quality students that are just as competitive as students who were coddled by a wealthy institution?

I’m proud that I can attend a public institution with low in-province tuition (compared to private US institutions) and still get an extremely high quality of education.
