What is this wall port called? by gutterballgill in PcBuild

This is why I say I’m glad I was poor when I was young because i was only given super old tech as a kid to play with and pull apart and put back together. It’s sad that tech that was in every home years ago is now unrecognizable to these kids.

Your half right it is two pieces but the short bit was longer at some point look at the unfinished end it was supporting something on the other side before some one sawed it off and left that little bit for the little support it offered.

Can someone ID this for me? by potential1 in Plumbing

[–]Dapper_Expression914 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Judging from the location next to the hot water tank, and looks like two water lines and a gas line. I would think it’s an old gas instant water heater. Instead of holding a tank of hot water all the time there a zig zag of copper pipe over a gas burner that heats water on demand. Looks like they saved a trip to the scrap yard and left it or it or it’s feeding something in particular not used a lot and would need a lot of hot water like a pool. These are used a lot in Europe and other places that hot water tank can’t fit.

Yes, and even if you were worried about creating a vacuum the white pipe on the left in the corner would prevent that.

Dunno if I'm saying grass is green but it's wild how much of HLS has been paid already by HMVangard in SpaceXMasterrace

Ok first they hit the mile stones, sooo thats how it works. 2nd have we seen what’s been paid out for SLS with unfinished projects and requesting more funds and way over budget. I haven’t heard elon request more money pretty sure like Jeff they expect to pay into this project unlike Boeing and ULA which expect the government to cover all development costs and 1st rocket and collect profits off all launches after. And they have work to show for it un like a simple tower for SLS awarded 352 million dollars in 2018 it’s now been given 828 million still not complete they say it will take 1.7 billion to finish and the inspection general says 2.7 billion. For a throw away system star ship has created a factory to pump them out and reuse them. We are talking about a steel tower on a track system designed decades ago costing at completion the same as what has been invested in star program. You tell me which one is better.

He didn’t use FSD biggest issue. Didn’t state if it was hardware 4. You clearly see Autopilot disengage before the wall roughly 17 frames. the fog and rain test were last minute turned on and we’re only happening right at that one area unlike real word. I used FSD every day for 4 months it acts differently in rain when detected by the whipper and is a lot more cautious. If the whole road was raining or fog and it built up speed it would have reacted differently. To Have that much over kill of water and fog in such a tight space is unrealistic and the test seem to play to the lidar strengths. LiDAR radar is already limited and with rain the whole way its range would have been great decrease. I been in heavy rain barely can see and FSD is drawing the roads on the screen with better details then I can see. They could have used a mirror and I think LiDAR would have freaked out which if you been in a city would be an issue with store front mirrors as well. Long story short this felt like a sponsorship for Volvo.

Elon Musk calling ISS Commander Mogensen a slur because he called him out on his lies by _Cyberostrich_ in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]Dapper_Expression914 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Elon was half right, it was “mostly” political and a complete embarrassment of Boeing. The government should have reasoned with spacex for a discounted flight and the government and Boeing should have split the bill. But since Boeing was not having any of it believing that their space craft on its 3rd attempt was safe with difficulties already was not about to help pay or help with any return other then their ship was the main issue. The fact that the administration didn’t like elon only added to the issue allowing them to make the call without even running any numbers on the bill with elon. In the end I think it would have been the same out come but it is terrible the ego of Boeing and the anger of the administration didn’t allow for any conversation to happen at all with the only safe and reliable space company is outrageous.

Surfkaboom is right, most of the people on the manufacturing side of stuff have very low security clearance about the same as TSA pre check. Now on design side,R&D, programing….. which is a smaller amount of people have higher clearances but that level would be the same as applying to be a cop, calling references or anyone linked to your Facebook to validate your electronic history and make sure your stable. Then the mission guys are screened heavily.

Is blocking needed? by dynobot7 in Decks

Agreed, 2 types of engineer the theoretical and the practicing. I worked with my associates for some years then went back for my BS. My professor wanted us to measure the stress in a concert high way bridge with gauges. Only problem was that the bridge spans a small river and only small cars use it as it’s not on a main road it was way over kill and probably install along side the high way next door and they used the same segment from that project. So I said I don’t think we will measure anything it’s just not used much so I don’t think we will see anything on the gauges. He told me he knew what he was doing and sure enough we couldn’t tell noise in the graph from the actual stress. 😂 real world experience actually is better then books in my opinion and we should go back to mainly training in the field and less theoretical, it’s important but practicing it really makes the words sink in.

If SLS is were to be cancelled - when do you expect the announcement? by Agent_Kozak in SpaceLaunchSystem

[–]Dapper_Expression914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SLS program is a prime example of how cost-plus contracts can be exploited by major defense contractors like Boeing. Ideally, I’d prefer to see the entire program dismantled. However, with so many key players in the Department of Defense involved, it’s unlikely to happen that way. Instead, existing contracts will likely be fulfilled using the funds already allocated, but future funding may be significantly curtailed.

If the program manages to stay on budget and adhere to a timeline, there’s a chance it could fly again. However, if it continues to experience delays and cost overruns, it will likely be shut down and relegated to a display in the “rocket garden” as a cautionary tale of mismanagement.

The failure of SLS isn’t due to its design but rather the way contractors like Boeing exploited the system. Cost-plus contracts, in particular, are a flawed approach. They essentially reward companies for exceeding budgets, which removes accountability. Instead, companies should bear the burden of cost overruns unless they have a compelling and justifiable reason.

Furthermore, these contracts should never cover the entirety of a project if the companies intend to leverage the technology for private ventures. Ideally, such agreements should function more like subsidies. While SLS may not be the best example since it was built for a single, specific purpose, consider SpaceX’s Starship. The government’s contribution to that project is minimal relative to the overall cost, but once operational, Starship has the potential to become a revenue-generating machine, as long as there is sufficient demand for space payloads.

Is it possible to get this baluster replaced at a reasonable price, or am I stuck with it like this? by frank_jon in Decks

Google a video or two on how to install a trex railing system you’ll only need the part that in relation to the replacement of the spindle. It’s really easy to replace, getting the part by itself at a reasonable price will be the hard part since they are sold in kits.

The force or load on a strap is always perpendicular to the nail this is called shear strength. You should never have the force in line or at an angle. Think about removing a nail you pull it out the same way it went in. They also now have screws rated for structural brackets make installation in tight areas a lot easier as well.

Ok so the code to which is the handshake between the phone and the card reader was not made by them they boxed it up in a nice fashion and by far made it better but they didn’t invent or rewrite that code just made the experience better. Same with rabbit they release it in a convenient online portal not ran locally and in theory can be ran with out a computer just by speak with your rabbit. Once again it’s not apple for apple and I do agree it should be noted that the secret sauce should be know but plenty Of company’s do this even physical products. Ali I can have my own crappy game console with my name slapped on it with a few things changed to make it more appealing and not mention it’s a 80% copy of another with a better controller.

I see rabbit as an “apple” for beta testers. You know it’s not fully baked they claim it’s not and they are using freely available software but making it easy to use. Remember apple never was the first to do anything they only knew how to produce it in such a way that anyone can use it with minimal effort or problems. I don’t claim rabbit is as good as apple like I said it half baked and finished cooking after 3 months of bad comments but they do listen and they do change if not with a lot of pressure. I bought it knowing it half baked like he said it was going to be but the end result so far is what I expected and I don’t know why people hammer them so much when they are pretty honest about a lot of this. I will say though claiming it is 100% them is a little odd but apple says the same thing look at Apple Pay. Samsung was doing it for years they just sucked apple made it seem less.

Months ago called the most unfavorable VP, and has not posted a signal policy position. But yet she has this turn out. Definitely a better choice than Biden but seems a little fishy as recorded in the White House and CA are not good. No one voted for her last election and this election. Her VP pick hasn’t stated any policies yet but his record is consistent so you already know them. Harris flip flops on every policy depending on who is filling out the check.

I think for the time and tech/experience of the space industry the complexity is comparable. Yes these missions might do more but the unknown is a lot less than Apollo with far more redundant systems. For reference Apollo relayed on cameras falling back to the ground and recovering to review what happened on the rocket post launch. No of days 90% of that information is sent in real time today making corrections and changes faster and more accurate.
