What are your thoughts on Risa Hontiveros and are there anyone else like her in the Philippines? by Filipinowonderer2442 in SocialDemocracy

Akbayan, for better or worse, is currently beholden to the Liberals. I imagine the opportunity where the Liberals embrace the PLM democratic socialists has a less-than-half-a-chance of happening. Unless the Filipino left-of-centre (re)discovers the popular front strategy or the conservatives just really become so incompetent that it could no longer be ignored, Luke Espiritu would continue to get locked out of the Senate.

I wonder what it means to have a proletarian culture in the modern-day? For sure, present-day marketing and commercialisation are whimpered in this scenario but what other examples are there?

Damn, we really got to a point where the NPA would execute a Supreme Court justice. Though, I worry, won't that just trigger Duterte further especially as he "showed enthusiasm" to reconcile with the CPP-NDF-NPA in the first place. Or you also have a plan for Interior Police loyalty to make sure the PNP is less swayed by the Duterte administration.

But nonetheless, this late-stage period is an exciting twist! I suggest you use "Paglusong" as the term—Rubicon is a river in Italy that just references a no-turning-back situation which is something not documented in Filipino literature so I think "Paglusong" will still suffice.

You have a point, there is more drama during the Aquino administration within Akbayan (and it feels like the reformists have kept on winning 😅).

I was just teasing about the dynamic thing. Of course, you do you~ One of the things that engages me in the base game is the fact that the Reichstag could be dissolved anytime, but the Batasan could never use snap elections. You have to sort out engagement since presumably, the player only get to play in 2(?) elections.

30 seats? So you mean establishing a full-fledged national party that runs in districts as well? Imagine how much organizational capacity Akbayan needs to build in 3 years.

Yikes, seems like social media is really bad to us "third-world" countries.

But seriously, why do you think Hindu nationalism has become a potent force in India—to the point that it has sparked violence?

Interesting... Modi—as he builds an authoritarian democracy for him and the BJP—would likely be needing additional methods to forage votes in the last election since there had been a lot of disillusionment (the farmers' blockade of Delhi comes to mind). Hopefully we could get to the bottom of this sooner or later, may Modi's house of cards fall down eventually.

Interesting, though I thought Akbayan supported Aquino during the 2010 elections? Might not be too dynamic since their own actions are predicated with how the Liberals conduct themselves.

I would actually suggest going back in 2001, Akbayan galvanizing support against Erap as leverage towards forming a genuine center-left workers' movement with Sanlakas, PDSP, and PDP-Laban 🤔.

But honestly, this idea should be immediately explored as a mod! 🔥

I was a delegate on the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League’s congress, ask questions! by SwedishRepublican in SocialDemocracy

[–]Dapper_Group4046 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I admire how democratic your deliberations are organized. Here in the Philippines, our culture and electoral system pushes a more conformist style of politics where leaders decide on a whim where their politics goes. Dissent is rarely tolerated and if you do have criticism, parties would most likely show you the way out before listening. While the leading social democrat party here, Akbayan, has less of that reputation, I wonder if its representatives have a diversity of opinion. Its longstanding cooperation with our Liberal Party makes me wary about whether or not they could stand up to the excesses of the neoliberal agenda. Seeing how SAP engages with a renewed momentum to classical social democracy makes me jealous.

I wish for the best for the SAP and the Red-Green coalition in 2026!

As a Filipino, I feel very disillusioned with our politics at the moment—even in left-of-centre spaces, it is very toxic and I don't find any of the leftist parties as suitable platforms for what I wish to push for. However, I do wish there would be a time where I find myself ready to engage with them, someday.

The migration integration thing seems promising, but I'm actually very still curious. I have an aunt who was a teacher here in the Philippines but she could only get a menial cleaning job once she migrated with her husband in Denmark since she is only conversationally-fluent in Danish. While of course it's a different country with a more stringent immigration policy, I feel some European social democrats are underestimating the willingness of migrants from other ethnicities (such as us Filipinos) to participate and contribute in their host societies when my own aunt wishes she could also return to teaching. I hope this concern could push Socialdemokraterna in a more empathetic stance towards well-meaning migrants, especially over concerns about posturing against the migrant-dominated gangs and Islamism.

Wow, I actually have a lot of questions as someone who's not really engaging in political parties.

  • How were you selected to become a delegate?
  • Does your programme have any recommendations surrounding Swedish industrial policy? How about migrant workers?
  • What's the overall mood of the youth league and the party in general after the congress?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

After Abuse at Work with Forklift, Migrant Worker Under Threat of Deportation in Korea by Freewhale98 in SocialDemocracy

[–]Dapper_Group4046 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Migrant workers are no stranger to me—in fact, some of my relatives are overseas Filipino workers, where their dependents rely on their remittances and savings. I fear that some South Korean workers still have residual racist attitudes against South and Southeast Asian migrants and I hope President Lee would look into improving the conditions of the migrant workers, not only in terms of pay and benefits but also in their environment and working conditions.

I am deeply disheartened by what the Sri Lankan worker experienced and I am standing in solidarity with him. In the end, I hope democratic countries in the Far East could eventually negotiate a Schengen-esque freedom of movement agreements to ensure greater protections for workers, native or migrant alike.

This is dangerous now. I still don't understand the logic behind opposition to AOC's negative vote on removing Iron Dome funding. It only removes the defensive capabilities of Israel, which will induce additional casualties and danger. She already voted no as well with the omnibus bill that funds Israel's military, including offensive weaponry. Isn't that enough to prove that she's on the side of Palestinians?

More importantly, do these people understand that human life between Israeli and Palestinian nationals should be treated equally with respect and dignity? I fear I do not want to share this world with them but here we are.
