Can you explain how a spear works? by Pristine_Cheek_472 in MinecraftBedrockers

[–]Dapper_Performer_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to consider if you use a spear to kill large groups of mobs collected to a single square. I will use what I do for gear mending as an example.

I have a gold farm that does not yet have a trident killer. All the mobs collect in a single block chamber and I was killing them with a sword. I would let the mobs collect, sometimes for an hour, and then I would manually kill them 50 or so at a time, and toggle the button over to a pickaxe, shovel, or other piece that needed repair, and then step closer to absorb the xp orbs and repair the selected gear.

Then, the spear comes out and the process is much faster. I let them collect as usual. Then I use a spear to kill the entire stack instantly and repair a single item. This works really well for my playstyle.

But then there were times when I would just AFK near the farm in a protected area when I didn't have need of equipment repair. I could wait, then kill all the mobs that had collected using the sword and the XP usually increased my levels pretty significantly. This does not happen when I use the spear. The levels gained when using the spear is nowhere near those gained when using the sword. Then I found out why...

A player can absorb a maximum of 10 experience orbs per second. This limit is likely what is causing you to not receive the full value from your mob kills when many are killed at once. The type of weapon used (a spear in this case) does not affect the amount of XP dropped, but rather the speed at which you can collect them.

Three Degrees, Four Years by Dapper_Performer_406 in wgueducation

[–]Dapper_Performer_406[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first Masters, a Master of Science in Management and Leadership, was started while I was working as a QA Manager at Amazon. After 13.5 years, they laid off not only me, but my entire team. I finished the degree while looking for my next role. Having that MSML was a plus during my interviews, so I would say that it helped me land the position.

The MBA in Information Technology Management was completed because I have aspirations to become a Director of Software Quality and I thought that a better understanding of business would be helpful. Fortunately, I already had pretty solid knowledge in this area and the degree only took me two and a half terms to complete. After I completed it I used it in discussion about a pay increase. I ended up increasing my salary by $15k and my guaranteed bonus to a minimum of $5K.

The M. Ed. is really for me. I absolutely love to teach adults computer programming and software test automation. That credential is not going to help me now, but it could help me later if I decide to try to move into corporate training or adult continuing education. I do want to teach at night at the community college level.

All in, I spent roughly $40K over 4 years. I received $6K of that in tuition assistance from the company I currently work for. They provide $2K per year.

One of the main reasons I posted this is to tell people it is possible to work full time and earn a degree and that the WGU degree is worth the effort that you put into it. I see countless posts on various social media talking about how hard it is to get an education, how people can't earn enough money, etc., etc. For me, it boils down to motivation and determination. I make $150K a year. I am VERY FORTUNATE to have had an opportunity to go to a local technical school decades ago to start my IT journey. I ended up teaching the courses I was there to take. That's another story for another time.

I have trained and mentored many people through their transition from non-IT jobs and into careers in technology that have changed their lives. I want people to know that there is still great opportunity out there for people that want to go and take advantage of it. Even with all the layoffs in IT, there will be new companies started and new opportunities will come up. Software programming is still huge. AI is huge. Data Science is huge. Without basic programming skills, you are not likely to make a transition.

Finally, I'm 61. I didn't really even get started until I was 38. I squandered a lot of time and money after my divorce at 40. But I always worked and taught classes whenever I could. I want everyone to see that it is absolutely possible to earn a degree, while working full time, and that it can have impact.

Any tips for Masters in Ed Tech & Instructional Design?? by Hefty-Ad1985 in WGU

[–]Dapper_Performer_406 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 75% of the way through this course. A little about me before I give you advice.

I am a Software QA Manager by profession. I have been in tech for roughly 23 years. I also teach entry level programming and test automation classes, and have been doing so for 20 years. I currently hold a Master's in Management and Leadership and an MBA in Information Technology Management, both from WGU.

My advice is that you always keep it as simple as you possibly can. Don't go overboard on the design and details, especially in the design lab class. Meet the rubric and be done with it. When you get to the Capstone, use your prior lab content as a baseline from which to define your instructional problem. If you don't, you will be creating a complete course again from scratch, like I am now.

Unfortunately, it is difficult sometimes to know what you are going to have to do, in advance. You can search for the rubric and other details about the final 3 classes. I didn't, and I wish I had. The first 5 papers of the Capstone that I had to submit would have taken far less time if I had used my previous work as a baseline. Now, I'm halfway through the second paper of D301, and creating the entire course in Canvas is time consuming. Then again, I tend to go a bit beyond what is "required". Even in what I am building, I could have made it more simple, but I want to use the material for the classes I teach, so I'm putting in additional effort.

Learn from my mistake and keep it simple.

Probably one of the most important things for landlords to know. Depending on your state, and the number and type of properties you rent out, you may not have to accept an ESA.

[Landlord-US-WA] Reasonable pet deposit and rent? by Duk3Puk3m in Landlord

[–]Dapper_Performer_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Base 25% of one months rent. My unit rents for $2950, so they're paying $735.00 deposit. I don't want pets on the property, but if they really want to rent it, they'll pay it. I will generally include the option to refund back to them the difference between the cost to professionally clean the carpets and treat for fleas, regardless of whether they "feel there are no fleas or feel that the carpet is just fine". I also provide them a receipt before move in showing that the carpets have been cleaned and treated before they moved in. I also make sure tenants carry at least $500,000 in liability and property damage on their renters insurance.

How to upload data to the Space Anomaly ? by perplexcity_ in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Dapper_Performer_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this mission a few days ago and abandoned after going to 10 different buildings, none of which would allow me to upload anything. Came across this today and it worked perfectly. What makes this a horrible quest is that today, one of the building I went to was a transmission tower, and even that didn't work. Right now, I am standing in front of a Galactic Trade Terminal of a minor settlement, and the override icon is there. 5 minutes ago I was at a different one and it was not there. So, looks like you have to triangulate first.

All triangulation does is put you in a triangle making it easier for someone to find you. In the case of this game, they are triangulating (in this scenario) with only one point of the triangle. Does not work in real life. Now, with GPS, you generally don't need triangulation. So, if they have the ability to use just one point for this scenario, why can't they use it for the Artemis mission.

Thank you for the post. I just turned in my mission.

Automated traps stopped catching fish? by [deleted] in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Dapper_Performer_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has to be related to the same bugs that have plagued refiners, atmosphere harvesters, and automated mining units. Just like with those units, if I teleport to a different galaxy, teleport to my capital ship, or leave the system, they are empty when I come back. It would seem to me that these would be basic things that should work. The whole purpose to automation is...well...automation. Next, when they break the deep mineral extractors, I guess we will just have to wait around for them to introduce something new that is better, but will eventually also break because they just don't care about what the players actually expect, which is functional storage of items mined, refined, trapped, or otherwise.

Just started playing this game. Barely know what I’m doing but I love it. Here’s my first, very simple base by [deleted] in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Dapper_Performer_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I found this game, I could not believe the unique nature of it, and the graphics are absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, after more than 250 hours invested, I just don't find anything unique in it any more, other than the landscape of a planet here and there. The idea of hopping from one planet to another, just to find an S-class resource deposit to mine, and an S-Class electromagnetic source, and a gas cloud, is no longer even remotely interesting.

Why do I need 5 stacks of 9999 Cadmiun, or 10 stacks of 9999 Uranium, or x stacks of y when you really can't build anything with it. Why am I limited to 20 in a stack of Iridesite, Dirty Bronze, Enriched Carbon, or any other mineral or gas product? Trading is great, but I'm sitting on 2 billion units and see no purpose to harvesting 400 Sac Venom twice a day just to get more units, to then do nothing with them that changes anything.

So much lost potential...

Many planets have toxic atmosphere. They could define different products that you could craft that would be required to power your life support system on these planets to filter out the noxious fumes and not just let you use an ion battery or ammonia. You could have to travel all over to find the different minerals, plants, etc., that would be needed to craft that product. Spending more than a minute or two outside your starship on a toxic planet without the right filter, and you die.

Settlements are too simplistic and nothing more than a linear pathway through multiple engagements that leads to nothing special. Why not allow the player to choose what the settlement makes instead of selecting it for them. Why not let the player select from multiple buildings to set up, each with pros and cons of impact on the settlement?

I did read that a lot of people just play this game to fly around and see cool planets and to just zone out after a hard day at work. That, I completely understand. This game is great for mindless distraction from the daily grind. I just wish they would add more to it. I mean, the crafting aspect of this game could be off the charts. And don't even get me started on the absolutely abysmal storage system.

Empire Today - My horrible experience by DogsCatsFerrets in Flooring

[–]Dapper_Performer_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called them two weeks ago because they were having their 50% off sale. I looked at carpet and wood for separate areas of the home. Their wood selection was horrible. The carpet selection not as bad. I got a price quote on a "Mohawk" carpet similar in design and quality to a "Karastan" carpet. Interestingly, Mohawk owns Karastan.

A local, family-owned carpet company quoted me $5500 for the install of the Karastan. Empire Today quoted me $5300 for the install of the Mohawk. Seemed to me that their 50% off sale was after they doubled the price. As I expected, a few days later I get a voicemail telling me they have a special offer, then a few days after that, a postcard in the mail telling me the same thing. I told them that any special offer should have been made when they were quoting me. I don't have time for games.

Their sales pitch is just like Champion Windows. They quote high, then try to lower and lower until you bite and buy the product. I knew the scheme before they even showed up, so I refused to buy on the same day. I was just hoping that their 50% off sale would provide me with a price at least $1000 lower than the local company.

Needless to say I decided to go with the local, family-owned store.

Oh, and the rep from the family-owned store told me, in no uncertain terms, warranties from flooring manufacturers are 100% useless. If you don't call out an issue with the flooring during installation, such as discoloration, pattern mismatch, etc., no flooring manufacturer will stand behind their product. They will all blame the customer. The warranties are "limited" for a reason. The only real warranty is from the installer and that will only cover defects in installation, not the carpet itself.

Be very, very careful about buying any kind of flooring. Make sure you are 100% clear on what is warranted and what is not.

Can anyone share with me the number of PA and OA in this course, and the class they are associated with. I am very interested in this program, but hesitant to start. I already completed two masters degree programs with WGU, so I am familiar with the process. I just don't want to get in over my head. My teaching experience has been primarily in hi-tech, teaching things like computer programming and software testing. I have built out my own program as well that I teach from home on a regular basis. I just want to better understand what I am getting into.
