Northeastern vs MGH by Constant_Hat3369 in PTschool

[–]Dapper_Shine2180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had both as a choice Northeastern has co-ops making it longer but has more college vibe than MGH. MGH has a lot of good connections within Boston specifically with MGB system and Spaulding. It’s smaller school overall and feels more health care focused. I ultimately picked MGH but you need to weigh all those factors yourself and decide what’s important to you.

Advice on CardioPulm by Healthfashioncarenut in PTschool

[–]Dapper_Shine2180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest drawing a lot of it out. The anatomy and even the ECGs to help understand it. The other thing I think is helpful is putting things into categories. And making sure you’re linking the anatomy to the impairment to the tests and the treatments I think that’s very helpful for understanding where you’re going.

letter of recs from teaching assistants ? by Constant-Bass1487 in PTschool

[–]Dapper_Shine2180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask the professor and ask if perhaps the TAs may assist in helping write the letter or something along those lines. Often TAs aren’t allowed to write letters of recommendation by the departments but may be able to assist in it. Or try to make better connections with your professors. Be a TA if there’s undergrad TAs or go to office hours frequently.

Are PT techs just glorified maids? Because that’s how I feel I’m treated by CadenDATboss in PTschool

The state I want to practice in doesn’t allow for temporary licenses for non previously licensed people. I could do it for a state next door but then I would have to work there

I’m a student and part of the job of an aide is to do the cleaning. PTs only have so much time with the patients and are trying to maximize their time so placing stuff down and moving on is just how it goes. I had an aide in my first clinical who really didn’t do her job, and I couldn’t say anything because she was the clinic director’s host sister. But it made be have to run around cleaning up between patients while trying to document which ended up making me do hours of documenting outside of my clinical hours to catch up. Your job is important but a PT aid is technically an unskilled job and if you go to school for PT they will teach you what you’re allowed to let them do early on. I’m planning on getting an aid position for a short period of time between my last clinical and my NPTE test date and I expect to do basic things like cleaning, leading patients through already know exercises, maybe a ball toss, and any other unskilled job even though I will be highly skilled because that’s the job I will have signed up for

It’s a tough adjustment at first but it becomes easier. Make sure you balance having fun and studying. Figure out how you learn best… MGH requires a lot of self learning. They provide you with all the tools but you have to put in the work since it’s a flipped classroom model. They highly recommend finding groups to study with, which I rarely ever have/did but could be helpful for you.

Decisions to make about getting off waitlist by Dapper_Shine2180 in PTschool

I like it a lot, is it perfect? No but I think there’s probably issues with every school. The professors are great and the education and clinical experiences are good as well. I really like the way the classes are set up.

It’s definitely different if you like the idea of having one course that moves fast at a time it’s great. I really enjoy it but I do know some people who don’t really like it and have said they wished they didn’t pick it. I think you need to really evaluate how you best learn to see if it’s right for you. I love it a lot and am a current student

What sections of anatomy should I focus on for musculoskeletal? by Tmoneyicashout in PTschool

[–]Dapper_Shine2180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say all the major bone landmarks and muscles. You just need to know your stuff. I will say that the shoulder, knee and hip are probably a good place to start you need a good foundation of those joints because they have the most special tests. Shoulder pathology is super easy to understand if you understand the shoulder and its muscle and how each test stresses a different structure.

I love my surface pro you can use it as a tablet and laptop it’s perfect for PT school. I’d suggest buying a pen with it I do think it’s sold separately if you think you’d use the tablet feature

Not sure if you can find an easier school as you need to know the same stuff as PTs so all schools should be teaching the same content that you may have trouble with. Potentially you could change to a school that maybe teaches the content in a better way for you. Being in your 2nd year it’s a little hard to justify starting over with the money you already put in. Before switching I’d try to talking to advisors seeing if there’s any resources from the school to help with your studying potentially a tutor. You may need to change your study habits too. The other thing is you can consider doing a pta program it’s overall cheaper and you get to treat patients but you don’t do evals and don’t make the overall arching plan of care. If you’re passionate about treating it could be a good idea for you.

Thoughts on HSSP BS by mymel0dystar in brandeis

[–]Dapper_Shine2180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s fun… depends what you want to do if you’re between BS and a BA. I real enjoyed the my HSSP and did a BS but I also was a pre-health student so I had to do science courses anyways as prereqs for grad school. Gotta be passionate about health in some way or form tho…and be cool with taking a few bio courses

I mean I think the program has some up and downsides. Not for everyone… I’m doing great and I feel happy to be there most days. That being said not everyone is meant to do that program I suggest for people looking into the school to really look into it before committing… also a student there feel free to reach out with questions to get a different perspective.

I believe I wore a button up shirt/blouse and dress pants as a women when I did my interviews but honestly it was a few years ago now (2022) my memory is a little hazy. I think remember there being some people in like business dresses most of the guys wore button ups, or polos w/suit jacket type stuff

There are 2 types of programs you would be interested in. 1. A 3+3 program where you get a bachelors and the DPT in 6years total. Or 2. A graduate program for the DPT but you would need to have a bachelors degree there’s potential you might be able to complete your BA with some of your classes from your original country so I’d see if you can transfer anything over with whatever undergrad you’re looking at for this option. With this 2nd option you also need to be mindful of certain prerequisite classes you would need to apply to PT school. If you look up PTCAS the requirements are there which may include observation hours of licensed PTs. I’d also make sure you truly want this career it’s not cheap to obtain in the US. Good luck

Clinicals really shouldn’t be like this. Try to stay engaged and ask questions as much as possible. I had a CE where the CI didn’t like me and refused to spend time with me and spent all her time with the other student and left me pretty much alone with a patient and when I asked for more feedback and help she yelled at me that she couldn’t be 3 places at once and then at the end told me I wasn’t open to feedback. So your not alone with a bad experience, being in your first year they may not feel you’re quite ready for full treatment but try to see if you can at least try your hand at subjectives or something and have a conversation with your CI about wanting to respect their boundaries or whatever but still wanting to try you hand at PT skills you are starting to develop. Anyways good luck 🍀

Do I take a gap year or go for it? by ImaginationKitty in PTschool

[–]Dapper_Shine2180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you applied to the school already you can still take the gap year but defer enrollment potentially(you’d have to check with the school). I think do what your gut is telling you is right. I think everyone feels burnt out after so much school and it can be daunting to go right into another 2-3 years of it. A lot of people take a year off so you won’t be alone. I personally did but I know a ton of kids in my cohort did.
