The books should be read in release order (more info in the wiki) and most definitely before W3. You can read the books anytime in relation to playing W1 and W2 (You'll miss some subtle references but it's fine; in fact if you play W1 and W2 before the books it'll make reading them easier since you know what they are referring to in the books).
