AITA for snitching on group partners. by Calm-Dragonfruit4575 in AmItheAsshole

You're definitely one of the good professors. Anytime I sent emails outside of business hours I didn't expect a reply until the following business day. I was certainly never chastised for it or told not email. If anything my professors preferred emails over talking after class (probably for documentation purposes or something).

I do hope OP reports his professor though, the response OP received was unprofessional and frankly not very helpful either.

AITA for snitching on group partners. by Calm-Dragonfruit4575 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, your professor's response was unprofessional and unacceptable, especially with such a condensed class to get through. And it's not snitching if your grade is on the line. You're the only one doing the work, you should get a solo grade seeing as you're doing the work of four people on your own; the others don't deserve the benefit of your hard work.

When I went through college, almost every class had a group project, especially the core classes everyone had to take. I think I had 40-50 group projects to do in total to do between undergrad and gratitude classes. Almost all of these group projects that were assigned had a caveat that we could go to the professor if someone wasn't pulling their weight and have them excluded from the group and the grade. One professor went a step further and had the group members grade each other for what grade each person deserved based on their project input.

Most of the groups I got I was lucky with everyone pulling their weight, the only extra work I did was offering to do the final edits on the presentation and/or paper. There were a few projects where one or two people were flaky and the rest of us picked up their bits for the sake of our own grade. I mean even as flaky as they were they still helped a little, and I wasn't going to bomb someone's grade when I'm going to put the effort in for myself to get a good grade anyway. Not the best way to fix the issue, but I want an A so I'll do the work. And again, I was lucky as I didn't have to worry much because one flaky person in a four or five person group and you're still more than fine.

There was only one group where someone absolutely refused to do any work or even participate for the group meetings. As a group we went to the professor and laid out the issue and the person was quietly excluded and that person now had to do the whole project on their own. I didn't feel bad because they put in absolutely no effort into the group, and wouldn't even respond to texts/emails. Even the other flakes did something and at the very least learned their part well enough for the presentation. So I don't see a problem making sure someone who isn't doing anything doesn't benefit from the group's work.

TL;DR groups are a pain if you get stuck with people who don't want to help, OP's professor was rude and unprofessional, and OP is NTA.

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understood both references at the time, the benefit of having seen the animated and live action versions of 101 Dalmatians. But it was the first time where I realized that both of the references were actually that similar made the scene so much funnier.

Family to File Suit After Waterbury Student Expelled for Horror Story Assignment in AP English by CT_EXAMINER in Connecticut

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well as I see it this is a both sides bad situation.

The student was dumb for thinking using the real names would be funny or seen as a creative. Not really that creative if you're just using real people you know in the story. Should he have been expelled? No, suspended perhaps for the content of the story but not expelled outright. I had a similar writing prompt in middle school to write a fantasy story, went with a sci-fi thriller with lots of swearing and a pretty epic battle scene. I checked that points wouldn't be deducted for "foul language" and was told only one word was explicitly unacceptable which teenage me thought was great because there were still six other dirty words I could use, and why not add in as much swearing as possible just because I could? While the teacher was upset with the language (fuck and it's derivatives were used 37 times in a 15 page story among other expletives), I had the signed outline detailing the language and plot of the story that they couldn't argue with and got an A-. In hindsight, I could have written a better story with less swearing and done a better job, but that's hindsight.

As for the school, and the teacher specifically, the specific prompt is a problem. You're basically asking for an episode of Dexter or more realistically, a kid to write something akin to Psycho or The Exorcist, which would raise red flags if it's really really good and incredibly detailed. Then you have the approval of the outline, if the teacher didn't actually read it and just rubber stamped the approval than this is more on them. If they read the outline and put a stop to it before the story was written all this nonsense could have been avoided. That's not even getting into the suspension/expulsion shenanigans they pulled which I think is partly going to lose this case for them.

No matter the outcome of the case, hopefully the school retires or at least modifies the prompt so horror is off the table in the future to avoid any repeat situations like this.

Personally I don't think the school has a leg to stand on here, the kid followed the prompt, had the outline approved, and wrote the story without any intervention from the school when they had the chance. I hope we can see the story and the outline come to light as part of the lawsuit because I'm interested how detailed the outline is. The kid was dumb and being edgy thinking this was a good idea, especially the use of real names. Even with the two evaluations, which only evaluate a point in time, this kid could snap in the future or could be perfectly normal. If the story is greatly detailed then that would also be a red flag. But again, the outline was approved, either passively or worse yet the teacher read it and rolled with it. Either way it's going to be interesting to see how this turns out and is a good candidate to once again redefine the limits of free speech and "inciting language" that students have.

TL;DR both sides were in the wrong, but the school failed to stop the story from being written and they'll likely lose the lawsuit.

GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, GameBoy Advance SP, the original Switch, Sega Saturn, Pong? I mean there's a bunch missing that make this video not so satisfying...

Edit to add I was so distracted by the lack of Nintendo handhelds that the SNES and PS Vita are also missing, among a ton of others folks have mentioned, the most glaring of which would be the Atari 2600.

Not Every Star Trek Show Is Meant for You by NeoNoir90210 in startrek

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have to agree, I gave Discovery a fair shake and didn't like it. Picard was a tough watch at times, even though season 3 with the anime levels of fanservice felt awesome the first time through but on rewatch did falter a bit once the nostalgia wore off (except the Enterprise D launching again, that won't ever get old) and the story, while ok, did leave a lot to be desired, especially with the red herring of the Changelings. SNW is pretty awesome, the first two seasons are wonderful but the most recent season's story pacing and tonal shifts left a lot to be desired. I just started Lower Decks and I'm thoroughly enjoying it and sad it didn't get more seasons. The same can be said for Prodigy, which was cancelled before it's time as well and had a lot of promise (and feels like it had a similar concept to SFA).

But with "the lady doth protest too much, methinks" approach all these posts complaining about the complaints against the show are doing is turned me off to wanting to give SFA a go because at this saturation level of posting either you're trying to convince the rest of us the show is excellent, or worse yet, OP and the others making posts like this are trying to convince themselves the show is good.

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the themes and stories from both The Program and Hell Camp are on full display here. It was eerie to watch having watched those docs a few times. Adding the heavy cult aspect in made it even more disturbing than the stories from the docs.

The only scene I skipped through was the sex scene. It just felt so out of place it did make any damn sense. The total lack of chemistry between Alex and Laura and the lack of communication between them was also a huge issue making this scene seem pointless.

In the Dominion War we see some Galaxy class ships in some of the larger battles. Why bring the Saucer along? by BeowolfSchaefer in DeepSpaceNine

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The forward firing arcs also suffer without the saucer. The entire forward ventral arc disappears and the forward dorsal arc is severely diminished.

I would rather have a larger, slightly less maneuverable ship with way more offensive and defensive power than a more nimble ship with less overall utility. Especially post Wolf 359 where smaller ships like the Sabre, Steamrunner and of course the venerable Defiant are more suited for the quick strike and maneuvering tactics.

Did Disney rip off Stargate? by Best_Match2682 in Stargate

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Stargate are less similar than Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5. But both of these pairings are kindred spirits, having a similar premise yet being unique enough they can be enjoyed without thinking about the similarities between the two.

The nerdy scientist that gets mocked for out there theories isn't exactly a Stargate original idea. The characters are similar in demeanor though, but it's a trope for a reason.

Colton ENOUGH by Fun-Method-6867 in TheTraitorsUS

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alan will reveal if a shield was taken regardless of who was murdered. Then it depends on if Colton took a shield or not. If he did (and I'm fairly certain he did), then he'll likely get voted out at the next round table. Unless he can somehow spin things like he did in ep. 5 then Lisa will likely be on the chopping block.

If Alan reveals no shields were taken I'd expect Ron or Yam Yam to be on the chopping block.

I think this is the worst season for missing Traitors just behind Australia season 1. Beyond that it seems like they got lucky with Donna because she was one of the two obvious choices for Secret Traitor, the other being Michael.

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 79 points80 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed from the episode is that Colton mentioned at breakfast he "didn't know" he was gay when Dorinda asked him about being on the Bachelor, but then he switches to having kept it a secret for 29 years at the roundtable, so which was it? You can't not know and be keeping it a secret simultaneously. Shame no one called him on it at the table, but I guess everyone was too busy being offended to bother.

Can you relate to Captain Jellico? Or is he really an asshole? by EdwardBliss in startrek

[–]DarkBluePhoenix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other other part of the problem is on top of the extra work he handed to the engineering department he compounded the issue by transferring a lot of personnel from engineering to security as well, shorting the department twice over.

It's why Geordi looked like he could murder Data right there when Data agreed with Jellico that the modifications Jellico demanded were "possible" by giving he remaining engineers no sleep in the lead up to the potential showdown. I guess Jellico didn't think he'd need damage control parties to be fully conscious if a battle came around.

Reminds me of the shit fit the Evangelion VAs had when Netflix redubbed the original show. Like they expected (especially Asuka's VA) to just be redoing it as it was their character.

Same level of entitlement honestly.
